[ha-Safran] Paul Hamburg, z'l

2024-04-18 Thread Ruth E Haber via Hasafran
It is with deep sadness that I must inform the AJL community of the death
(on Monday, April 15) of Paul Hamburg, esteemed and beloved UCB Judaica
Librarian.

As UCB Judaica Librarian from 2002-2015, Paul worked closely with the
(then) Doctoral Program in Jewish Studies, devoting great care and
seemingly boundless energy to building collections to sustain and enrich
Berkeley’s thriving Jewish Studies scholarship in the key fields of
Comparative Literature, History and Near Eastern Studies, as well as across
the disciplines.

For Paul, the Library was not confined to a particular building or place,
but was everywhere that ideas and scholarship happen: in the classroom and
at home, at cultural events and in conversations on campus, in cafes and on
the streets of Berkeley. And he helped make it so through his class and
library workshops, the rich array of public lectures and events he
organized, as well as the Hebrew literary salon held in his own home -- to
name just a few.

In his work, Paul was dynamic and tenacious, seeking always to enrich and
protect library collections. And his approach was also warmly personal: we
who were graduate students during his tenure always felt his keen interest
in our research, while our faculty noted Paul’s tireless pursuit of
hard-to-find materials they needed. Moreover, the substantial benefits UCB
scholars reaped from Paul’s work had roots in the rich network of
connections he sustained with scholars, librarians and booksellers
throughout the world.

I’ve noticed that, while writing this short (and insufficient) tribute,
I’ve had to repeatedly edit for overuse of the word “warm” – and that is
very telling. Although Paul was certainly serious, dogged and scholarly in
his work, and could certainly be a tough customer when defending a worthy
cause, the first and lasting impression he gave was always of hearty
enthusiasm. And while most of Paul’s hard work was not visible to the
scholars he served, that warmth spoke volumes about the values that drove
him: a deep devotion to learning and teaching, and to the growth of a
library not only of books but of ideas, not only of this time and place,
but also of the past and future.

[ha-Safran] FW: THE WAY OF MAN (MARTIN BUBER) - a worthy addition to your Film Collection

2016-08-02 Thread Ruth

THE WAY OF MAN- A FILM ABOUT MARTIN BUBER

What motivates young people in the 21st century to live their lives inspired by
a philosopher born in the 19th century? Why do they see him as a spiritual
guide?

In this lively documentary, we learn that his philosophy is alive and well. Not
simply a historical biography of a leading giant in the field of philosophy,
this film shows how Martin Buber is more relevant and timely than ever.

Already purchased by the libraries at Pennsylvania, Arizona State and Duke
Universities, this film is a must for students and scholars of philosophy in
particular and the 20th Century in general.

You can read more about this film at
<http://www.ruthfilms.com/the-way-of-man-a-film-about-martin-buber.html>
http://www.ruthfilms.com/the-way-of-man-a-film-about-martin-buber.html

or contact us at <mailto:r...@ruthfilms.com> r...@ruthfilms.com

Purchase price for university libraries is $300 + shipping and handling and
$115 + shipping and handling for public libraries.

Using Buber’s discourse, individuals of the Facebook generation are finding
practical answers to the existential questions that occupy them: the search for
spirituality and enlightened living, listening to the other, creating dialogue
that moves beyond the political backdrop, and engaging with the other as a
precondition to being a whole person.

Looking forward to receiving your order,

Best regards,

Ruth Diskin

Sorry for the self-promotion, but there are my two books, /Blue Thread/

color is coming out in February 2017 (/Seven/ /Stitches/. All are
published by Ooligan Press and available through the usual bookstores

Re: [ha-Safran] source for quote and the original hebrew

2016-06-02 Thread Ruth Haber
This is from the poem beginning "יונה תקנן" -- that's poem #110 in volume
1 of Brody's edition
(*Diṿan : ṿe-hu sefer kolel kol shire Yehudah ha-Leṿi* ...ʻim hagahot

Yitsḥaḳ Iṭtsḳoṿsḳi, 1896-1930).
See p. 166, line 37-8.

The original line is: נבלי וכנורי בפי עטי / גני ופרדס ספריה
"My harp and my viol are in my pen / its books are my garden and orchard of

(see Raymond P. Scheindlin, "The Song of the Silent Dove: the Pilgrimage of

[ha-Safran] FW: TEACHING IGNORANCE - a must-see for teachers/educators

2015-11-12 Thread Ruth Diskin
"In 'Teaching Ignorance,' filmmaker Tamara Erde offers powerful footage of
bright educators who teach one narrative and yet seem oblivious to the
existence of another. A must-see for teachers in conflict zones." (Avital
Chizhik-Goldschmidt/Haaretz)

The future of the conflict may not lie with politicians and soldiers. As we
see in this powerful documentary, the way in which history is taught is
vital to achieving a measure of hope.

In her review in the Haaretz newspaper, Avital Goldschmidt highlights the
important role that education has in preparing the next generation. Two
education systems, side by side - each one with its own perspective on
reality.

You can read the full review here:

http://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2.3006/.premium-1.685228

Already purchased by Duke University library, we encourage you to own a copy
of TEACHING IGNORANCE as well. Purchase price for universities is $300 +
shipping and handling, and $115 + shipping and handling for public
libraries.

LESSONS OF SURVIVAL: Conversations with Simon Wiesenthal

Now - a SPECIAL OFFER FOR LIBRARIES - $150 PURCHASE PRICE (instead of 300
USD) for universities libraries and 99 USD for public libraries.

Fighting evil and challenging immoral actions are sadly still relevant in
today's world.

In conversations with the legendary Simon Wiesenthal, Inna Rogatchi allows
us to learn from this courageous man. Over a period of time and in chain of
friendly discussions with the filmmaker, Simon Wiesenthal shares his
insights into the psychology, philosophy and sociology of the Holocaust, and
its implications to this day. The universal appeal of his message continues
to be relevant, and this film provides unique insight in the lessons of
survival and actively opposing evil.

A rare peek into important perceptions by a singular man.

[ha-Safran] FW: FW: THE WAY OF MAN - a thought-provoking documentary about Martin Buber

2015-09-26 Thread Ruth Diskin
Shalom Safranim,

The Way of Man – a new documentary about Martin Buber now available for
educational/public use.

What motivates young people in the 21st century to live their lives inspired by
a philosopher born in the 19th century? Why do they see him as a spiritual
guide?

This year marks 50 years since Martin Buber died. But in this lively
documentary, we learn that his philosophy is alive and well. Not simply a
historical biography of a leading giant in the field of philosophy, this film
shows how Martin Buber is more relevant and timely than ever.

You can read more about this film at
<http://www.ruthfilms.com/the-way-of-man-a-film-about-martin-buber.html>
http://www.ruthfilms.com/the-way-of-man-a-film-about-martin-buber.html

or contact us at <mailto:r...@ruthfilms.com> r...@ruthfilms.com

Purchase price for university libraries is $300 + shipping and handling and
$115 + shipping and handling for public libraries.

Using Buber’s discourse, individuals of the Facebook generation are finding
practical answers to the existential questions that occupy them: the search for
spirituality and enlightened living, listening to the other, creating dialogue
that moves beyond the political backdrop, and engaging with the other as a
precondition to being a whole person.

Looking forward to receiving your order.

Best regards,

Ruth r...@ruthfilms.com

[ha-Safran] FW: FANTASTISCH - a Wonderful Addition to your Film Collection

2015-08-09 Thread Ruth Diskin

Shalom Safranim,

Aging is a topic that touches us all. And in this exuberant documentary we
get a peek at one man who refuses to adhere to the norms.

In his recent review in EMRO, Michel Fein writes "To say that he is an
example of "positive mental attitude" is to say that water is wet". In
FANTASTISCH, we learn that the secret to a long life is vivid colors; happy
music and making others smile. 100-year-old Shmulik Lesched is living proof.
And in this sometimes melancholy and enormously uplifting documentary, we
get to know a man who energetically takes on life. A kid at heart, Shmulik
is no ordinary street performer. Breaking all preconceptions on aging, and
together with his devoted caretaker, Mira, the two of them travel Israel and
the world spreading good cheer - all the while working on the secret to a
meaningful and long life.

Already purchased by the several leading libraries throughout the world, we
think this film is essential to your collection as well.

You can read more about FANTASTISCH at
<http://www.ruthfilms.com/fantastisch.html>
http://www.ruthfilms.com/fantastisch.html or contact us at

[ha-Safran] [SPAM] FW: WAVES OF MEMORY - a New and Powerful Documentary for your Film Collection/Course

2014-09-11 Thread Ruth Diskin
Shalom Saframin,

Waves of Memory - a new documentary by Gad Aisen

Significant historical events merge with personal memories in this beautiful
documentary. The story here is about escaping WWII Europe and getting safely
to the shores of Israel, a country still in the making. On December 7, 1946
the immigrant ship Rafiach, making its way from Yugoslavia, sank near the
barren Greek island of Syrina. Most of the illegal immigrants survived and
were rescued a few days later. On board the ship was a 12-day-old baby that
survived along with his parents. 66 years later, a journey to his roots
leads Shlomo, that baby, to discover more details about the true story of
the drowning.

Using beautifully animated sequences, we also learn about Mossad agent
Abraham Lichovski who saved the immigrants. His character emerges from the
shadows and tells the story as written his own hidden reports for the first
time on screen.

In her recent review, blogger Amy Kronish writes: "It always amazes me that
there are still new and powerful Holocaust stories being uncovered. Today I
had an amazing experience watching the documentary film,Waves of Memory,
directed by Gad Aisen."

Purchase price for public libraries is $115 + shipping and handling, and
$300 for university libraries + shipping and handling.

[ha-Safran] LESSON OF SURVIVAL - a Worthy Addition to your Film Collection

2014-08-06 Thread Ruth Diskin
LESSONS OF SURVIVAL: Conversations with Shimon Wiesenthal

A film by Inna Rogatchi

Documentary, 57 min., 2004 - new release

Already purchased by the visual center at Yad VaShem, we think this film is
a must for your collection as well. The purchase price for university
libraries is $300 + shipping and handling, and for public libraries $115 +
shipping and handling.

[ha-Safran] FW: SAGA OF A PHOTO - a New documentary by Ruth Diskin Films

2014-07-08 Thread Ruth Diskin

SAGA OF A PHOTO

"a personal biography - and a broader depiction of the nascence of Israel's
national cultural institutions." (EMRO)

Documentary 82 min, by Mooly Landesman

For a moment in time, one photo exposed the joy of filmmaker Mooli Landesman
grandparents' wedding in 1926 in Berlin. A moment later, everything will
turn upside down. This is a story about love and a love story that crosses
borders - both physically and emotionally.

As the recent EMRO review establishes, SAGA OF A PHOTO is not only a
beautiful film, but it also allows us to learn about historical events
through the life of one remarkable woman. Through the use of family photos,
archival footage and beautiful reenactments, we are taken on a journey
through some of the most turbulent and wonderful experiences of the 20th
century.

Already purchased by several leading university libraries, we would be glad
for you to include this film in your collection as well. purchase price for
university libraries is $300 + shipping and handling and $115 + shipping and
handling for public libraries.

[ha-Safran] A New Documentary - Worthy of your Film Collection/Course

2014-06-30 Thread Ruth Diskin
Shalom Safranim Ve'Safraniot,

Lea Koenig's Loves

"her story is one that is universal and unique at the same time"

A film by Talia Ohaion, Doc., 62 min.

The great Israeli actress Lea Koenig is presented here as she tells the
story of the two great loves of her life - the theater and her husband,
director and actor, Zvi Shtopler and the blurred borders between reality and
the stage.

As the recent review in EMRO outlines, this lovely film is both dramatic and
entertaining. The life of one woman, who became one of the greatest Israeli
actors, is remarkable yet accessible. We learn quite a bit from the
wonderful archival footage and from the in-depth conversations with the
woman herself.

Already to be found in the collections of Harvard, Penn and the Library of
Congress, this film would be a good addition to a public library collection
as well as academic libraries that support Israeli history, theater, and
women's studies.

Purchase price for university libraries is $300 + shipping and handling. The
price for public libraries is $115 + shipping and handling.

[ha-Safran] A New Documentary about a Remarkable Man

2014-06-05 Thread Ruth Diskin
THE HUNGARIAN CUBE: A JOURNEY WITH ANDRE HAJDU

A film by Gilad Inbar, Documentary 72 min.

As recently reviewed in the Jewish Eye, this film is a "sweet and tender"
while telling the unconventional story of an unusual man. Israel-Prize
winner composer Andre Hajdu is also the father of six sons and the husband
of Ruth who converted to Judaism. Each of his sons, like the famous
Hungarian Rubik's Cube, represents another facet of this extraordinary man:
"In a way, it is as if each son represents one aspect of Hajdu's life,
highlighting the complexity hidden by the casual demeanor that he presents
to the world".

You can read more about this film in the review at
<http://www.thejewisheye.com/hajdu.html>
http://www.thejewisheye.com/hajdu.html. Already purchased by Duke, Penn and
Harvard universities, we think this film will be a wonderful addition to
your collection as well. As Anna Dogole writes in her review: "The Hungarian
Cube - A Journey with Andre Hajdu is a wonderful film that will not only
interest Jewish audiences, but also anyone with an interest in music,
composition, or simply learning about a man who has, and is, living a very
full and remarkable life!"

[ha-Safran] A New Documentary about a Remarkable Man

2014-05-13 Thread Ruth Diskin

You can read more about this film in the review at
<http://www.thejewisheye.com/hajdu.html>
http://www.thejewisheye.com/hajdu.html.

[ha-Safran] A Superb Documentary about a Woman Larger than Life!!!

2014-02-25 Thread Ruth Diskin
Shalom Safranim,

FROM HELL TO PARADISE a documentary by Michael Teutch

She experienced and witnessed most of the significant events of the 20th
century: World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, and the Holocaust,
the Liberation, Communism and the birth of Israel.

This week at the age of 110 Alice Sommer passed away - the oldest Holocaust
survivor. This amazing woman's life is lovingly presented in FROM HELL TO
PARADISE. This film documents what makes Alice Sommer so special, and how
the spirit of music shaped and inspired her life; how the music helped her
to survive the ghetto and Theresienstadt. How she was able to recover
mentally and physically from the loss of her family. Brought up in Prague;
educated in German culture; living and working in Israel for 37 years, she
followed her son to London where she died this week.

Already purchased by several leading universities libraries, as well as by
the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, you can read more about the film and watch
a trailer at <http://www.ruthfilms.com/from-hell-to-paradise.html>

Re: [ha-Safran] Fwd: A request to pick your brain

2014-01-19 Thread Ruth Bryskier
I am so curious about this. Looking forward to the answer. Only tangentially
related story I know of is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Desnos

One day Desnos and others were taken away from their barracks. The prisoners
rode on the back of a flatbed truck; they knew the truck was going to the gas
chamber; no one spoke. Soon they arrived and the guards ordered them off the
truck. When they began to move toward the gas chamber, suddenly Desnos jumped
out of line and grabbed the hand of the woman in front of him. He was animated
and he began to read her palm. The forecast was good: a long life, many
grandchildren, abundant joy. A person nearby offered his palm to Desnos. Here,
too, Desnos foresaw a long life filled with happiness and success. The other
prisoners came to life, eagerly thrusting their palms toward Desnos and, in
each case, he foresaw long and joyous lives.

The guards became visibly disoriented. Minutes before they were on a routine
mission the outcome of which seemed inevitable, but now they became tentative
in their movements. Desnos was so effective in creating a new reality that the
guards were unable to go through with the executions. They ordered the
prisoners back onto the truck and took them back to the barracks. Desnos never
was executed. Through the power of imagination, he saved his own life and the
lives of others.

The following message was forwarded to me. Can someone help?

In the current Harvard Alumni magazine there is in inquiry that prompts me to
write.
A reader is looking for the source of a work that describes children queuing
for the gas chamber while a palm reader tells their fortunes. The refrain is
"the wrong parents, the wrong parents."
Does this sound familiar to you?

Re: [ha-Safran] THE ISRAELI CODE - a must documentary for Israeli/Jewish Studies Dept.

2014-01-16 Thread Ruth Diskin

Shalom Safranim,

The enigma of contemporary Israeli is examined in the new documentary 'THE
ISRAELI CODE'.

What makes Israel a unique social experiment? And what makes Israelis tick?
This film is a journey into the Israeli public sphere where sociologist Gad
Yair and photojournalist Alex Levac join in to try and understand some of
the DNA of Israeli society.

Questions of personal space, public displays of patriotism and communal
sense of guilt are all examined in this light-hearted documentary. The
Israeli way of life is scrutinized through the award-winning photographs of
Alex Levac and the astute observations of leading sociologist Gad Yair. And
accessible way to survey the complexities of contemporary Israeli life.

This film is perfect for those who want to deepen their understanding of
Israel, and an essential learning tool for students of Israeli
studies/Jewish studies.

[ha-Safran] THE FLAT is a must for your Film Collection/Course

2013-11-26 Thread Ruth Diskin
THE FLAT by Arnon Goldfinger is "One of the best movies of the year. It
plays like a great mystery - and it is. This is what a documentary should be
- smart, moving, profound and unpredictable - in other words, what we look
for in a great film. The Flat is all of that and more." Michael Moore,
Filmmaker and Executive Director of Traverse City Film Festival

What are you waiting for.!?

Already purchased by leading universities worldwide, THE FLAT is a must for
your collection as well.

The buzz around this most successful documentary is all true. Winner of over
20 international prizes, and screened at numerous conferences and
educational symposiums, THE FLAT leads the way for a new take on discussions
of the Holocaust. The burdens of the third generation are not those of the
previous ones, and in this mind-boggling story, the filmmaker is able to
take on his family's history in ways not even dreamed of by his mother. THE
FLAT opens many discussions and paves the way for debate about the very
nature of the way we look at the Holocaust. The film places the Holocaust in
the larger context of modern Jewish history - and of one family's complex
place within the framework.

I'm trying to put together a list of books appropriate for high school

familiar with are not very literary and the secular YA literature is rarely
"kosher" enough. Anyone have any suggestions?

Issues of identity and cultural diversity are part of everyday life for many

Fringes: New Adventures in Jewish Living

A film by Paula Weiman-Kelman & Jonathan Lopatin (Doc., 73 min., 2013)

Safranim Shalom,

The recent Pew Report on the status of US Jews has created a huge storm of
debate. But one film preceded this tempest with questions and portrayals of
diverse Jewish identity in the post- modern age.

FRINGES takes us on a journey to the fringes, the edges of contemporary
Jewish life and shows us the possibilities. As a recent review in the
Educational Media Review Online says: "the life stories are quite
fascinating and portrayed sympathetically. The earnestness in each of them
shines through in their lives".
http://emro.lib.buffalo.edu/emro/emroDetail.asp?Number=5189

Already purchased by Harvard, Duke and other leading Universities, we think
that your library will benefit from owning a copy of this film. As
discussions on this topic continue to create waves, it is nice to have a
springboard for sound and interesting conversations.

The purchase price for FRINGES is $300 + shipping and handling, or $115 for
public libraries. You can read more about the film at

[ha-Safran] FW: LAND FOR THE NOMADS - EXCITING NEW FILM ABOUT THE BEDOUINS

2013-08-27 Thread Ruth Diskin

LAND FOR THE NOMADS
A film by Lipika Pelham

Documentary, 55 min.

Shalom Safranim Ve'Safraniot,

Basic human rights – and human interactions are at the core of this
documentary. The plight of a Bedouin community in the hills outside of
Jerusalem is championed by an unlikely protector in the form of Israeli
attorney Shlomo Lecker.

Former BBC reporter Lipika Pelham tells the story in a gentle and convincing
way. As you can read in the recent review of LAND FOR THE NOMADS in EMRO
<http://emro.lib.buffalo.edu/emro/emroDetail.asp?Number=5161>
http://emro.lib.buffalo.edu/emro/emroDetail.asp?Number=5161

The Bedouin were displaced from the southern Negev desert around 1950 shortly
after the creation of Israel. In what’s seen as a gradual process since the
1970s, state-sponsored Jewish settlements mushroomed up all along the desert,
limiting the Bedouins’ nomadic way of life. Shlomo Lecker is an Israeli lawyer
who defies all stereotypes. He is a Jew who fights for the Arab Bedouins. He is
an Israeli who challenges the Israeli judiciary. The film explores Lecker’s
personal relationship with his clients – the lone Israeli who claims that he
has a Bedouin soul.

LAND FOR THE NOMADS observes issues that are between the personal and the
national, the modern and the traditional, the exotic and the familiar, with
irony and humor that make the film accessible to a wider audience.

Already purchased by Harvard University, Arizona State University and Penn
State, LAND FOR THE NOMADS would be a wonderful addition to your collection as
well.

The purchase price for university libraries is $300 + shipping and handling,

[ha-Safran] PURUSED - A Powerful New Documentary for your Library

2013-06-27 Thread Ruth Diskin
Shalom Safranim,

PURSUED - A closed society. A harrowing personal story. A first-person
narrative in Yiddish

The issue of sexual abuse is well known, but little discussed in the Jewish
Orthodox world.

In a recent positive review on the Educational Media Review website:
http://emro.lib.buffalo.edu/emro/emroDetail.asp?Number=5110 , Sheila Intner
recommends PURSUED, saying "Pursued successfully employs the power of the
camera to reveal the underbelly of Hasidic life. It puts to shame those who
use the cover of religion to hide their evil behavior and exposes them and
their deeds in all their horror".

In this courageous self-portrait, the camera becomes a weapon of entrapment
as well as an instrument of redemption in the painful chain of sexual abuse.

Filmmaker Menachem Roth was an adolescent attending an all-male,
ultra-Orthodox boarding school where he became the victim of sexual abuse.
Twenty years later he confronts his abuser, documenting their disturbing
relationship. Simultaneously, the director must choose between religious and
secular life-styles, and between parallel romantic relationships. The end
product is a daring first-person account of one man's search for a degree of
serenity in a life that has been forever changed.

And important film that will lead to significant dialogue and raise
essential questions for your audiences.

Purchase price for university libraries is $300 + shipping and handling. The
price for public libraries is $115 + shipping and handling.

Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish Heroes

2013-06-25 Thread Ruth Bryskier
I just heard about this one, although I haven't read it yet:

The Avengers

Rich Cohen

A.A. Knopf, 2000 - Biography & Autobiography - 261 pages

In 1944, a band of Jewish guerrillas emerged from the Baltic forest to join
the Russian army in its attack on Vilna, the capital of Lithuania. The band,
called the Avengers, was led by Abba Kovner, a charismatic young poet. In
the ghetto, Abba had built bombs, sneaking out through the city's sewer
tunnels to sabotage German outposts. Abba's chief lieutenants were two
teenage girls, Vitka Kempner and Ruzka Korczak. At seventeen, Vitka and
Ruzka were perhaps the most daring partisans in the East, the first to blow
up a Nazi train in occupied Europe. Each night, the girls shared a bed with
Abba, raising gossip in the ghetto. But what they found was more than
temporary solace. It was a great love affair. After the liquidation of the
ghetto, the Avengers escaped through the city's sewage tunnels to the
forest, where they lived for more than a year in a dugout beside a swamp,
fighting alongside other partisan groups, and ultimately bombing the city
they loved, destroying Vilna's waterworks and its powerplant in order to
pave the way for its liberation. Leaving a devastated Poland behind them,
they set off for the cities of Europe: Vitka and Abba to the West, where
they would be instrumental in orchestrating the massive Jewish exodus to the
biblical homeland, and Ruzka to Palestine, where she would be literally the
first person to bring a first hand account of the Holocaust to Jewish
leaders. It was in these last terrifying days--with travel in Europe still
unsafe for Jews and the extent of the Holocaust still not widely known--that
the Avengers hatched their plan for revenge. Before it was over, the group
would have smuggled enough poison into Nuremberg to kill ten thousand
Nazis. The Avengersis the story of what happened to these rebels in the
ghetto and in the forest, and how, fighting for the State of Israel, they
moved beyond the violence of the Holocaust and made new lives. From Rich
Cohen, one of the preeminent journalists of his generation and author of the
highly praisedTough Jews, a powerful exploration of vindication and revenge,
of dignity and rebellion, painstakingly recreated through his exclusive
access to the Avengers themselves. Written with insight, sensitivity, and
the moral force of one of the last great struggles of the Second World War,
here is an unforgettable story for our time.

Howard Fast's book, "My Glorious Brotthers", historical fiction about the
lives of the Maccabees, might work for you. In 2011 it was reissued in
paperback.

And, there are many. many Holocaust books that highlight heroics of Jews,
however I would not recommend the Book Thief for that purpose, although it
is an excellent book.

Hello Dear Colleagues,

Our college hopefully will be offering a Jewish literature series next
spring focusing on the theme of Jewish Heroes/Heroines. Our audience is the
larger community consisting of adults between the ages of 35 - 85.

A couple of titles we are considering are:

Megillat Esther
Exodus - Leon Uris
Book Thief - Marcus Zusak
All Other Nights -- Dara Horn

It would be wonderful to hear what titles you would recommend as worthwhile
for reading and group discussion. Many thanks in advance, Rose

[ha-Safran] NO FULL STOP - NOW AVAILABLE FOR YOUR LIBRARY

2013-01-23 Thread Ruth Diskin
Shalom Safranim,

The “Dirty War” in Argentina had many victims – and a disproportionate number
of them were Jews.

Journalist Shlomo Slutsky grew up in an activist environment in Argentina of
the early 1970’s. But while his activism led him to choose to make a life in
Israel, many of his friends stayed in Argentina and paid a price for their
political activities. This personal film traces the choices made by a
generation.

On assignment in Argentina to cover the trial of General Menéndez, charged with
mass murders during the 1970's dictatorship, the filmmaker soon finds that this
professional reporting assignment for Israeli television soon takes him on a
personal journey through Argentina, Spain and Israel, re-tracing the footsteps
of his old friends from the Jewish youth movement. Friends who in 1976 chose to
join the guerrilla forces while Shlomo chose to immigrate to Israel. Many of
these friends were imprisoned, tortured and killed. Shlomo survived.

An important film about a nearly forgotten chapter in Jewish history.

2012-02-20 Thread Ruth Diskin

AUF WIEDERSEHEN-TILL WE MEET AGAIN by Linda Mills

& Brian Dilg

The melding of two monumental and tragic events is at the heart of this
moving personal documentary. In the recent Video Librarian review, P. Hall
wrote: A personal history of how the Holocaust reshaped one family's
existence. On 9/11, filmmaker Linda G. Mills's son, Ronnie, who was
attending public school in lower Manhattan, witnessed the destruction of the
World Trade Center. Five years later Mills decided to link Ronnie's
experience with the forced exile of her Jewish mother, Annie, from Vienna in
1939.

[ha-Safran] FW: Slightly, Seriously, Critically Injured - A Powerful New Film for your Library/Course

2012-01-12 Thread Ruth Diskin

Slightly, Seriously, Critically Injured

slightly seriously critically on the run

A film about pain. A film about perseverance.

Documentary 53 min. 2011 - New Release

A film by Amir Bar Shalom and Avital Ben Moshe (already purchased by the
Library at Harvard University)

Dear Friends,

This moving film takes on the issue of physical injury - and shows us the
strength of the spirit.

A family's life changed in a split second. On June 28 2007, an IDF elite
commando unit set out on a routine mission. Point squad commander,
Lieutenant Itay Erenlib, sent the bomb detection dog out to the alley. The
dog returned without pointing out anything suspicious. Erenlib's squad began
to move towards the Kasbah. A minute later an earth-shattering noise rocked
the alley.

On the evacuation helicopter Itay was declared seriously injured, wounded in
the abdomen as well as having lost a hand and two legs. In hospital his
situation deteriorated and was declared "beyond critical".

With a rare intimacy, "Slightly, Seriously, Critically Injured" reveals the
world of a critically injured, 22 year old soldier at the most difficult
moments, and his family's moments of frustration and fear - and ultimately
hope.

We encourage you to add SLIGHTLY, SERIOUSLY, CRITICALLY INJURED in your film
collection/library.

[ha-Safran] Homecoming according to the Video Librarian

2011-12-15 Thread Ruth Diskin

Look what cid:734275507@27102011-1E53 is saying about Homecoming by Noa
Maiman

(already purchased by the Harvard University Library)

Where does identity come from? And what makes you connected to your home
land?

The quest for identity in modern day Israel is beautifully addressed in this
special documentary.

A universal problem in the world today, Video Librarian calls HOMECOMING:

"A provocative and moving study of ethnic identity". And indeed in a world
where economic migration is rampant - this film is essential for your
library collection.

As the review goes on to say: "the camera follows the three subjects on
their journeys, and it becomes evident that despite the geographic
differences, all three countries share the same burdens of grueling poverty,
a virtually nonexistent infrastructure, and dead-end lives for those unable
to emigrate".

We are sure that your library patrons will benefit from learning more about
this

contemporary topic.

The purchase price for university libraries is $300 + shipping handling and
for public libraries the price is $115 + shipping and handling.

To learn more about this film please go to our website at:
