named Shira to her lover Benjamin. Eve realized that the letters contain
secrets about the family of her new love Mac. What secrets are revealed and can

[ha-Safran] The Hebrew Teacher at Nice Jewish Books

2024-06-17 Thread Sheryl Stahl via Hasafran
Often, we just want to connect with all the people around us and fix any
problems we see. In the Hebrew Teacher, a collection of three novellas, people
attempt to do this in very different situations. But sometimes, other people
see the problem from a different perspective, or the problem is not what it
seems. And to connect with someone else, they need to want to connect back with
you. Join me for a conversation with Maya Arad about navigating life, jobs, and

Subject: [ha-Safran] Introductions and greetings from Vancouver

Hello Safraniot and Safranim:

My name is Eugene Barsky and I wanted to take a minute to introduce
myself and my school to this community. I have been a librarian for
quite some time, working at the University of British Columbia in
beautiful Vancouver, BC for the last twenty years or so. I have served
as a health librarian, science and engineering librarian, research
data librarian, department head and acting AUL. I also teach a
research data course at the UBC iSchool. Recently though, as a
personal project, I focused some attention on the Jewish Studies
liaison in my school. We are a very large public university with
almost 70,000 students, but don't have a solid Jewish Studies
collection. We have thousands of random items purchased over the
years, mostly in English (although we do have some Hebrew and Yiddish
items). I would like to spend a few years improving and building a
stronger, more focused collection, and I thought that this community
could help me with anchoring to the best possible resources and guides
to start. I hope that this is the right place and you would be open to
me asking some questions! For instance, would you recommend one
subject guide for Jewish Studies that you see as very relevant to your
work?

Thank you and hag mimouna sameah.

Eugene

[ha-Safran] Discovering the mysteries in Our Little Histories : a conversation with Janice Weizman

2024-02-19 Thread Sheryl Stahl via Hasafran
Check out the latest episode of Nice Jewish Books!

We start in a familiar place, in contemporary Chicago, where Jennifer, a museum
curator, is asked to go to Belarus to create a living installation of Jewish
life there before the Holocaust. She invites a distant cousin to participate,
and she brings with her an old Yiddish literary magazine to use as a prop in
the installment. In each chapter we move backward in time. As the settings
become less familiar to us, we see the cousin relationships getting closer and
see that there is a poem in the journal that is directed at three brothers in
the family. The triplets had been separated at a young age. To find out why,
and what the poem has to do with it, we must travel back further in time. Join
me on this journey of Our Little Histories by Janice Weizman.

When people think of Operation Moses, they usually think of a plane full of
Ethiopian Jews, the Beta Israel, arriving in Israel. But their journey started
long before the plane ride and continued for years after arriving. Kim Salzman
follows a single family as they journey in three groups from Ethiopia to Sudan,
to Israel, and into the Israeli absorption centers. They each endure a
physically dangerous and emotionally wrenching journey.

[ha-Safran] New podcast episode

2023-08-13 Thread Sheryl Stahl via Hasafran
I hadn't planned on covering another graphic novel so soon, but I absolutely
fell in love with this book. During World War 11, Japanese citizens were
rounded up and sent to internment camps. When they were finally released, the
vast majority had lost their homes and businesses. In the upcoming episode of
Nice Jewish Books, I speak with Josh Tuininga about one of the rare exceptions
to this appalling situation. Josh focuses on the Sephardic Jewish community in
Seattle, Washington where the friendship between Marco Calvo and members of the
Japanese community rippled through the generations.

[ha-Safran] Newest Nice Jewish Book podcast episode

2023-07-11 Thread Sheryl Stahl via Hasafran

If I told you that this episode was going to be about a house which ran around
on chicken legs, you might assume that this should belong to an odd looking
children’s book. But NO! This is a full-fledged intruiguing adult adventure.
When the Yaga siblings inherit their grandmother’s house, they set off on a
journey to hide from the mysterious man who is stalking the house, discover
themselves, and oh yes, create puppet shows along the way. Listen in to Hannah
Srour-Zackon’s interview of GennaRose Northcott about her AJL honor winning
book, Thistlefoot.

Subject: [ha-Safran] looking for a book title

I'm trying to track down a book title.
the book was written several years back for middle grades about a girl who had
a holocaust survivor grandmother . The girl was toying with the idea of
converting to Christianity ( she had rosary beads). The book Had a cross on the
cover. I'm quite sure it won a Sydney Taylor book award. It won the award the
year the AJL conference was in Boston.
Want to purchase this book for a reader.
Thanks all for your help,
