[ha-Safran] Can you help?
Shalom Safranim ve Safraniot, One of our readers in the library is in search of a modern novel that was originally written in English and subsequently translated to Hebrew. The novel should focus on a maternal figure in a patriarchal society or, alternatively, matriarchs in a female lineage. The Hebrew novels *Four Mothers* and *Tamara Walks on Water* by Shifra Horen would be two such examples, but for the language origin. Another option could be a novel that touches on physical and emotional maternal deprivation or alienation, also written originally in English and translated into Hebrew. Any suggestions??? [ha-Safran] Help
Shalom Safranim ve Safraniot, One of our students is looking for a short story, translated from Yiddish, about a young boy who was given a tray full of shalach monos (Purim treats) by his mother to deliver to various friends and neighbors. After he distributed them, he found that he was left with one. He had apparently forgotten someone on the list. After considring his options, he ate the whole thing himself. He threw out the orange, because it was bitter (he didn't know that it had to be peeled). Later he was consumed with guilt. The story begins with, "My father rarely took his nose out of his books, but when he did he could make himself useful." Any ideas? I appreciate any help that you can provide. Thanks in advance. [ha-Safran] help with a short story
Shalom Safranim, Recently, a visitor to our library was looking for a short story which tells the story of an old man who didn't have the opportunity to learn at a university as a young man. He began his university studies as an old man, there he saw young students who had this chance to learn but didn't really care very much to do so. He became very upset until one day he met a young man who acted very differently. They spoke for hours and afterwards the old man received a book from him. Does anyone recognize this story and can send me the name of the author and the title of the story.
