[ha-Safran] AJL Roundtable: Managing Judaica Among Multiple Subject Areas

2023-12-19 Thread Yelena Luckert via Hasafran
Dear all,

In case you have not seen this.

*AJL Roundtable: … and Jewish Studies Librarian: Managing Judaica Among
Multiple Subject Areas*
Wednesday, January 10, 2024
9:00 am PT / noon ET / 7:00 pm Israel Time

This roundtable is an opportunity for “community of practice” discussions
among librarians, with Judaica as one of multiple subject areas under their
responsibilities. Many of us become Judaica librarians by accident, coming
from different disciplines and being asked by our administration to do this
work for various reasons. When this happens, many librarians have to find
their way into the profession of Judaica librarianship, not realizing all
that goes into this field. At the same time, most of us are working in
the field with Judaica as one of the multiple areas of responsibility,
juggling numerous subject areas and other duties, often entirely unrelated
to Judaica librarianship. This could be overwhelming, leading to
professional self-doubt about whether we are as good as we should be.
Although we all end up loving what we do, we have to cope with this often
entirely on our own, including, for example, figuring out where to ask
questions and get professional advice. We all have been there, and it is
still a prevalent practice in many libraries.

Please join our panelists, Guy Burak (NYU), Rachel Leket-Mor (ASU), Neil
Frau-Cortes (Broward County Library system), and David Hollander
(Princeton), moderated by Yelena Luckert (UMD).

This session is sponsored by AJL’s RAS Division and is for AJL members
only. All members are welcome.

[ha-Safran] "The Prophet" by Ilan Rubin Fields

Dear all,

 , for your
library. I can't find a commercial distributor that sells it. My library
refuses to purchase it directly from the producers since they want a
non-commercial educational license, and the producers do not seem to know
how to get it. Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated. Thank
you.

Re: [ha-Safran] Mold issue in library

2021-11-19 Thread Yelena Luckert via Hasafran
I fully agree with Jackie. Don't touch the materials before you talk to an
expert, and make sure you are masked and have gloves when handling them.
This said, the books can be saved, although it might be a costly
enterprise.

Dr. Shay Hazkani is a historian of the modern Middle East, with a
particular interest in the social and cultural history of Palestine/Israel,
and Middle Eastern Jews. In his research and teaching, he focuses on the
interactions between elites and non-elites, and how ideas that emanate from
elites and state institutions were transformed and subverted as they make
their way to the reflections and conduct of ordinary people.

His forthcoming book, *Dear Palestine: A Social History* of the 1948 War
(Stanford University Press) recasts the 1948 war in Palestine through a
socio-cultural history of the conflict’s ordinary actors and its
transnational reverberations. [*Visit full biography

[ha-Safran] Fwd: help with an article HaDoar 5 pt 1

2021-02-16 Thread Yelena Luckert via Hasafran
 Dear everyone,

I got the scans, and amazingly both Harvey Sukenic from Hebrew College, and
Sharon Horowitz and Ann Brener from the Library of Congress sent me their
scans at the very same time! So we are covered and I forwarded everything
to my faculty who has not even had time to respond to me yet, but I am sure
he will be delighted. A huge thank you to them and to everyone who
responded to my inquiry. It is such an amazing feeling to be a part of
this giving and kind community of colleagues and friends.

My very best to everyone,

Dear all,

I’m wondering if you can help one of my faculty to get an article (actually
a series of articles) that appeared in the American Hebrew journal ha-Do’ar
(הדואר) in vol. 5 (1926), issue 12, from p 20 on. It is the memoir of a
Polish Jewish writer called Mordechai David Brandstetter. We were not able
to locate these specific articles in sources to which we have access to.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [ha-Safran] streaming films through the Kanopy website

2020-07-06 Thread Yelena Luckert via Hasafran
Kanopy is very expensive and it is probably better for the mainstream type
of things. I did not rely on it for Jewish/Israel Studies that much. Our
film studies faculty come from a multitude of departments, disciplines, and
programs and use both documentaries and motion pictures. We used to
subscribe but had to cancel their services because of the cost. The
decision to subscribe to it was not well-vetted in the first place. When
we canceled - it created a lot of issues with confusion, access, etc.

Dear all,

One of my faculty needs the following article but we can't find a place
that might have it. I am wondering if someone on the list can help. Here
is our information:

Journal: Ḥadashot חדשות. 1993
Article Title: Microbim be-sherut ha-Medina [Microbes in State Service]
Article Author: Sara Leibovitz-Dar

We've contacted the National Library of Israel directly (
https://www.nli.org.il/en/journals/NNL-Journals001913776/NLI) as well as
sending a standard request through ILL (
https://umaryland.on.worldcat.org/oclc/233236693) and they have responded
in an email to us that while they have this newspaper, they do not have the
volume/issue that has the article you have requested.

We do not know of any other location for the journal.

Hi Anna,

Here are some possibilities:

Elie Wiesel, The Jewish of Silence, 1966
Paul Novick, Jews in the Soviet Union, 1965
Shelomo Even-Shoshan, Sipuro shel masa, Tel Aviv, 1964
Zvi Rudy, Die Juden in der Sowjetunion, 1966
A. Werth, Russia: Hopes and Fears, 1969 (based on several author's
visits).
Sidney Rackoff, "My visit to the USSR," New World Review, v. 40, 1972.
Rackoff was an American Rabbi.
M. Kaufman, "Visit to Russia," Jewish Life, v. 35 (1967).

Hope this helps.

[ha-Safran] New book by Neil Frau-Cortes

2019-01-08 Thread Yelena Luckert via Hasafran
Dear all,

Just wanted to let you know about publication of a new book by our
colleague, Neil Frau-Cortes, Frau-Cortes, Neil M. *Rabí Simó ben Tsémakh
Duran : Florirá frondosa la branca. *Palma : Ajuntament de Palma, 2018. It
is a biography of R. Simeon ben Zemah Duran (1361-1444), including a
genealogical study and a short anthology of his works (some poetry, as well
as legal, and philosophical texts). Not sure where to get it if you are
interested, Neil donated his own copy to my library so I got lucky and did
not need to look for it. If you run into troubles of finding it, you can
try to reach out to him, nf...@umd.edu.

To: acrldigitalhumanitie...@lists.ala.org

The US Holocaust Memorial Museum announces a new digital primary resource
tool
for the college classroom, entitled Experiencing History: Jewish
Perspectives
on the Holocaust:

experiencinghistory.com

Experiencing History: Jewish Perspectives on the Holocaust, offers a unique
primary source study experience designed for the undergraduate college
classroom. Meant for a variety of disciplinary and pedagogical approaches,
the tool presents original source material that is fully translated,
contextualized, and annotated. The resource presents materials from the
victims’ perspective, which is often belied or ignored. Explore a diary,
wartime letter, historical film footage, testimony, poetry, photography, and
many more. Please note that more content will be added to the site in mid-
December, prior to the start of the new term. Create an account, save
materials for your class to examine together, explore topics through tags,
or
explore thematic collections of sources. Your students can create their own
accounts and join your class in order to see materials that you may have
saved. They can also explore the tool independent of being a part of a
course.

[ha-Safran] Call for chapter proposals

2016-10-06 Thread Yelena Luckert
Dear friends,

I am sending this proposal on behalf of myself and my co-editor. We will
be extremely happy if the book contains some chapters that highlight
Judaica/Hebraica librarianship in the US: collection building, services,
information literacy, relations to campus and local communities, etc. You
can talk about achievements, challenges, directions, thoughts, reflections.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I am really looking
forward to hearing from you.

Yelena

*Call for Chapter Proposals*

*The Globalized Library: American Academic Libraries and International
Students, Collections and Practices (working title)*

Editors – Yelena Luckert & Lindsay Inge

For publication with ACRL Press

Proposal submission deadline: *December 1, 2016*.

Send Proposals to: https://libumd.wufoo.com/forms/qco1z950z0rjl0/ or to
yluck...@umd.edu and/or li...@umd.edu.

Editors Yelena Luckert and Lindsay Inge invite the submission of chapter
proposals for a book on international aspects of American libraries. When
reflecting on libraries in the United States, we almost never think of them
as being international in nature. We view them as an “American”
institution, serving our “American” patrons and our “American”
organizations. Yet, libraries in America are international to their core.
The book’s primary focus is to take a sort of inventory of what has been
done recently in the field of international librarianship in US
institutions, inspire more libraries and librarians to do this work, and
spark imagination to develop new things. We are open to studies that branch
away from higher education or topics outlined below as long as they focus
on globalization and international librarianship.

New and completed research and case studies are welcome, provided any new
studies can be completed within the timeline explained below. Chapters
based on completed research must not be previously published or
simultaneously submitted elsewhere.

We are seeking proposals for the topics described below. However, we will
consider other topics provided they are within the spirit of the book and
will add another dimension to the overall discussion:

·Collection development

-Building general collections of area studies based on foreign
acquisitions (approval plans, cataloging, readership, etc.).

-Building special/archival collections of foreign materials.

-International digitization projects.

·Teaching

-Information literacy for international students on American
campuses.

-Integration of international students into American college
culture and environment.

-Developing new librarians: teaching global issues through
examples in US library and information programs.

·Library partnership programs

-Sister library program.

-International cooperation.

-International assistance.

-Readership programs like American Corner.

-Unique partnerships and agreements.

·Professional development of librarians

-Participation in international conferences

-Exchanges of library professionals (skills, experience, knowledge)

-Employment abroad for American librarians

-Pen pal program

Submission procedure: Please submit chapter proposals of up to 500 words, a
short author’s statement, and a writing sample, to
https://libumd.wufoo.com/forms/qco1z950z0rjl0/ by *December 1, 2016*. You
can also choose to send your proposal to yluck...@umd.edu and/or
li...@umd.edu by December 1, 2016. If you are proposing new, uncompleted
research, please provide a tentative timeline that includes a date for
completion, evidence of institutional approval, if appropriate, as well as
any additional dates you think are relevant. Authors will be notified of
acceptance before February 1, 2016.

If there are multiple authors for a chapter, please submit author
statements for each author and at least one writing sample - it is optional
to provide multiple writing samples (i.e. not all co-authors have to submit
writing samples, but if you feel it best represents your team to submit
more than one, please do.)

Note: This initial stage requires a 500-word description, so just planning
out your article now is fine. Final manuscripts of between 1500 and 5000
words will be due *July 1, 2017*, with drafts and edits staggered
throughout the year as best fits the schedules of the author(s) and editors.

I hope we all in AJL affirm Israel's right to exist and flourish. But I do not

this resolution that denies Israel's right to exist?

Elliot & Shoshana, and any other AJL member who has a voice in ALA - is it
too late to submit an AJL sponsored statement to ALA's Council? How does one do
it? I can write a short one but I need to know which ALA body has the authority
to publish it.
This is not new(s) and I suggest we highlight the hypocrisy of signaling out of
Israel as opposed to countries and terrorist organizations who commit genocide
& war crimes (Nigeria, Hamas, Sudan, etc.), and using anti-Zionism and
anti-Semitism to politicize a professional organization. We should also mention
that scheduling such meetings on the Sabbath is offensive to Jewish members of
ALA and is a de-facto act of censorship.
AJL membership is a rainbow of political convictions vis-à-vis Israel (Thank
God!), but I am sure we can all agree that Israel's right to exist is not
debatable, and that the work of our colleagues in Israel promotes coexistence
and peace and shouldn't be reviled and railroaded by ALA.

Dear Yaffa,

I have received you mail from Elhanan Adler, who proposed that you might assist.

It was brought to our attention that in the coming ALA (winter) the attached
resolution would be adopted by ALA council.

1. Are you aware of this initiative? I found no mentioning of such
resolution, and I don't know if this is a real thing or not.

2. Does ALA take such resolution and if so in what forum?

3. If so, how can we help prevent such resolution? Who can help? What is
required?

4.Can AJL assist in such effort?

Thank you in advance,

Dear all,

Does anyone have Encyclopedia of the Bible and its reception, vol. 8?

I need some help with verifying citation below, i.e. title and page numbers for
Dr. Abusch's entry? The original question is below.

Following my question to you earlier, this is what a fellow of the Albright,
Prof. Zvi Abusch is looking for. He needs the reference (i.e. page numbers and
the year of publication) for a chapter he wrote in the Encylopedia of the Bible
and its Reception. It should appear in vol. 8 Essenes-Fideism (ISBN:
078110183764) which came out already or it might not – therefor there would be
no answer to both of his questions…

We do not have this set yet. Will much appreciate your help. Thank you very

I'm stunned by the notion that Rachel's committee would object to having this
non-Jewish (and worthy) author speak. Yes, we need to support our local Jewish
authors. In fact, my library committee is sponsoring its second Author Panel
wherein local Jewish authors who write on mostly secular topics discuss their
work. However, a library represents first and foremost the literature, not the
author. Let's look at it from a different perspective. I am a Jewish author,
and I am currently invited to speak at two Catholic schools. They apparently
don't feel they need to support only Catholic writers. So, I say invite Grace
Tiffany and promote it robustly!

Subject: [ha-Safran] Non-Jewish speakers
Dear Hasafranim,

We have a respected professor and historical novelist in town -- Grace Tiffany
-- who just wrote a book called Paint set during the Shakespearean era, the
protagonist being a part Jewish, part Italian female poet. According to the
author herself, the Jewish content is minimal. However, she also wrote an
earlier book, based on The Merchant of Venice called The Turquoise Ring, which
is primarily Jewish.

I'm considering inviting her to speak, but one member of my library committee
suggested that, as a Jewish institution, it would be best to support Jewish
authors exclusively. Such a thing never occurred to me; to me, as long as the
scholarship and perspective is sound, then the author should have something of
great value to impart.

I'm curious as to what others have done and considered regarding non-Jewish
speakers.

ALCTS Web Course: Fundamentals of Acquisitions
Next session: November 18 – December 13, 2013

This four-week online course is a basic primer for library acquisitions
concepts common to all library materials formats. It covers:

· Goals and methods of acquiring monographs and serials in all formats;

· Theoretical foundations and workflows of basic acquisitions functions;

· Financial management of library collections budgets;

· Relationships among acquisitions librarians, library booksellers,
subscription agents, and publishers.

This course provides a broad overview of the operations involved in acquiring
materials after the selection decision is made.

In FOA, we distinguish between collection development, which involves the
selection of materials for the library; and acquisitions, which orders,
receives, and pays for those materials. In many libraries, selecting and
acquiring materials may be done in the same department—in the smallest
libraries perhaps even by the same person. In larger libraries, selection may
be done by a collection development department and/or designated subject
specialists, while a separate department acquires the selected materials. In
essence, acquisitions is a business operation, bringing materials into the
library and licensing access to library collections and resources.

Who should attend: As a fundamentals course, FOA is tailored for librarians
and paraprofessionals new to the acquisitions field; and librarians and support
staff from other library units and library school or LSSC students who want to
know more about acquisitions. Although FOA focuses on the acquisition of
monographs in various physical formats, it covers key components of acquisition
and licensing processes for all library materials, in all formats, in all types
of libraries.

This course is one-third of the Collection Management Elective course approved
by the Library Support Staff Certification Program (LSSCP).

Registration Fees: $109 ALCTS Member and $139 Non-member

[ha-Safran] Hebrew language discussion group.

2012-07-16 Thread Yelena Luckert
Dear all,
I am writing to you in my role of the Chair of the Librarianship and Education
Committee. The Librarianship and Education Committee, as one of our
initiatives this year, is trying to form a Hebrew Language Discussion Group/s
as a way for our membership to improve our collective Hebrew comprehension,
something we feel is crucial in our profession. The idea is to put together a
small Hebrew language discussion group/s via Skype led by native Hebrew
speakers from our membership. This won't be a class, so no home work will be
given and no preparation is needed on the part of the moderators, although
moderators might post a topic for discussion for each meeting. It will be a
chance for people to practice their spoken Hebrew, while moderators could
assist with the language, correct mistakes, lead the discussion, etc. There
will not be any cost involved. The number of groups will depend on the demand
and willingness of moderators.
If you are a native Hebrew speaker and are interested in moderating please let
me know.
If you are interested to be a participant in such a discussion please let me
know.
This activity is design for members only. Once we know the number of
moderators and participants we will be able to determine the number of such
groups, time and frequency of meetings. This is a really interesting idea
(kudos go to Daniel Scheide for it). AJL to my knowledge has never tried such
an activity, and its success and failure will be determine by the
participation. Please respond to me directly. It would be helpful if besides
your name and contact information you could indicate which part of the country
you are in, so we can figure out the timing for all time zones.
Thank you all very much for your kind attention. I am looking forward to
getting many messages.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Need help -- FW: Le Nebel du Galouth

Hi all,

I need help in getting a copy of the following and am wondering if anyone on
the list knows or has a contact at the Bibliotheque de l’Alliance Israelite
Universelle in Paris. Here is what we need for one of our faculty member.

We are looking for a copy (photocopy is OK) of Ryvel (Raphael Levy). Le Nebel
du Galouth. Tunis: La cite des livres, 1946.

There are four copies in the Bibliotheque de l'Alliance Israelite Universelle
in Paris.
They say that they can only be consulted at the library, but it is possible to
make a photocopy, so they might perhaps be kind enough to send us a photocopy
or a scan, as it is only 38 pp., but we don’t know anyone there to ask.

Here are all the details:
Raphael Levy (Ryvel) Le Nebel du Galouth, Tunis 1946.

Search the AIU library at www.aiu.org<http://www.aiu.org/>, go to Catalogue,
Rechercher un ouvrage, then click either RACHEL or Bibliothequeque de AIU,
Titre, Notice Detaillee, gives No. systeme 000131565, Ou trouver le document,
then you see 4 copies, 3 can be reserved. All are on the shelf.
Here are the call nos. of the three copies:
AIU-8RBR75 Barcoe: B7248
AIU-8RBR76 Barcode 7249
SIF G8 502 00052000249673 (this may be a different library).

Many thanks for your help in advance.

2011-12-09 Thread Yelena Luckert
Dear all,

Please forward this announcement to those who might be interested in taking
this class. Although it is not Judaica related, I am aware that a number of us
have colleagues who might be interested. If this works, next time we will try
to do something related to Jewish treasures in St. Petersburg and maybe even
Moscow libraries and archives :-).Thank you.

STUDY ABROAD IN ST. PETERSGURG: REGISTRATION OPENING SOON!

The University of Maryland's iSchool is pleased to announce "Libraries and
Cultural Heritage Institutions of St. Petersburg, Russia," May 25-June 8, 2012.
The two-week course will explore unique and innovative libraries and
information services in modern Russia in their historical and cultural context.
The course will be offered during the festive and magical White Nights season,
when the sun hardly sets and it never gets quite dark.

Currently celebrating its 300-year anniversary, the magnificent city of St.
Petersburg is today Russia's cultural capital. Shaped by imperial, Russian and
Soviet influences, its rich heritage offerings are beautifully preserved.
Students will take private tours and attend lectures at major institutions,
including Peterhof, the Hermitage, Pushkin (Czar's Village), Pushinskii Dom
(one of the most important literary archives of Russia), the Library of the
Academy of Sciences of Russia, the National Library of Russia, Mayakovskii
Public Library, and other sites of cultural and national importance. American
students will meet with Russian library school students from St. Petersburg
State University of Culture and Arts to discuss technical, socio-cultural, and
legal/regulatory information access issues in the United States and Russia,
highlighting the similarities and differences.

Russia is a major player on the world stage-politically, economically, and
culturally. It is a country of contrasts. Through this course, students will
see firsthand how Russia, a formerly communist state, is opening up and
transforming access to information. The main learning goal is appreciation of
major Russian libraries and cultural heritage institutions, from both an
historical and modern day perspective. The course will help prepare students
for careers as information specialists working in a variety of libraries and
information centers serving international patrons, working in international
organizations, or working in other countries.

The teaching team will be led by Dr. Trudi Bellardo Hahn, Professor of the
Practice at the iSchool, Yelena Luckert and Lily Griner, subject specialists at
the University of Maryland Libraries and fluent in Russian.

DATES: May 25 to June 8, 2012. Students will meet as a group at the University
of Maryland on May 25 and 26 and leave for Russia on May 27.

COSTS (TENTATIVE): The student fee will be about $3,300 (it will be finalized
when the registration opens in mid-December), which includes accommodations,
all breakfasts and 5 dinners, some transportation within and around St.
Petersburg, registration fees for all course-related activities, and insurance.
It does not include airfare to and from the United States nor the cost of
obtaining a visa.

The 3-credit course is open to students at the iSchool at Maryland as well as
students from similar master's programs in the U.S. Practicing librarians who
are not taking the course for credit may also apply and will be admitted on a
space available basis. Registration will be open, with more specific
information about costs and itinerary, by mid-December 2011. Registration will
close March 15, 2012, or as soon as the course is filled.
