It is I think an Australian film. And breitbart was a Jewish hero to the Jewish people. Any help, or any film, newsreels etc on siegmund breitbart, is greatly appreciated. I hope you can locate it. I heard there was a copy in tel aviv, in the 1980s, until terrorists destroyed that city. - ray __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran@lists.osu.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.osu.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.osu.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.osu.edu https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran
Re: [ha-Safran] Beth David Library (Reform) in Westminster California is Being cut in half.
Interesting. I’m sending this off to my Rabbi. He s young and game for challenges and change. Our synagogue’ s library has become a dumping ground. We never had a librarian , nor any library programs. I always say , as Jews , we are people of the book twice blessed. Let’s showcase our libraries anyway possible. Whether to our own congregations or to the public, for Jewish communities, holidays, personalities( books on Anne Frank Ruth Bader Ginsberg, various sports players) .)history ( the Holocaust), and books discussing intolerance ,immigration and of course values, mitzvot . The first cut back librarian hours to the point of ridiculousness back in 2017 and still has no librarian. The other had me remove 1/3 of their collection to change the library to a multi-use room. All both needed, in my opinion, was more promotion from the clergy and staff plus displays in the foyer. The pandemic certainly made the situation even worse as people were not in the building for 2 years and even now, things are still hybrid. My take on the demise of time and/or money investment in synagogues libraries is 1) Many do not think of checking the synagogue library collection for specific titles or browsing like they do the public libraries. 2) Many people nowadays do not value serendipity or the library experience. They buy books online or visit independent bookstores. 3) synagogues themselves are changing and having to make tough financial choices. 4) Clergy and staff do not promote library usage - I cannot explain that one at all! This is all especially sad because our Jewish youth are not getting exposed to good quality Judaic literature from a curated collection. Books with Jewish themes or characters are buried in school and public libraries. Thanks to AJL, at least we have access to great recommendations to award winning Jewish books. We just have to do our best to promote them. Even sadder than the loss of these synagogue libraries is the loss of so many regional JCC or Jewish public libraries! keep up the good work, AJL! They need the classroom for the Youth Lounge. The Youth Lounge is being turned into a preschool classroom to make more money for the synagogue as the Preschool has a waiting list. The 1,100 childrens and teen books are going into the Religious School Directors office. The 100 reference books are going into the Rabbi's office. 400 of the 1800 adult fiction and non-fiction books are staying in the new Youth Lounge. The remaining 1,400 or 1,500 books are going away. This is a nightmare to eliminate the books that are going away from my ResourceMate catalog. Has anyone else had to deal with this? I have been the Volunteer Librarian there for 10 years. In my view, a bet midrash is a space where there are books meant to be used in the space - which is different than a library (with someone actively curating a collection which can also be lent out to users). But I certainly am open to other thoughts! In this case, I was specifically looking for synagogue librarians in Orthodox libraries. Re: [ha-Safran] Who taught the course on Romanization of Hebrew at YIVO?
Whenever I see Dr . Haas Weinberg s name I am always so thrilled! She was my professor at St. John s University when I was a library student . Little did I know in 1984 I’d end up a Judaica librarian as at the time I was working at theUNITED NATIONS, let alone become President of theLong Island chapter of AJL!! I was in awe of her intelligence as my professor! She taught indexing and abstracting and for our end of term paper, we needed to index a short book or pamphlet .I was a library clerk in the map room of the UN LIBRARYsbd so I indexed the pamphlet describing the flag of Australia . Something she didn’t know( as most people don’t know either) I taught her the teRm, Vexillology , the study and history of flags . The UN MAP COLLECTION LIBRARY housed all the info regarding each flag (and then some) of all the flags that waved and still wave UN front of the UN! I loved my time at SJU School of library science! Over the years, Rachel has contributed so much to the Association of Jewish Libraries, to the field of Judaica librarianship, and to librarianship as a profession overall. On very short notice and under challenging circumstances, she played a pivotal role in transforming AJL’s 2020 conference from an in-person to a highly successful virtual event. Rachel’s passionate devotion to public service is a model for us all, and she truly personifies the values and legacy of the Award’s namesake, Fanny Goldstein.” said committee chair Zachary Baker. The Fanny Goldstein Merit Award, named for the librarian, social activist and founder of National Jewish Book Month, is bestowed in recognition of loyal and ongoing contributions to the Association Of Jewish Libraries and to the profession of Judaica librarianship. Born on May 15, 1895 [some sources say 1888], Fanny Goldstein devoted her life to books and community. She was the first female Judaica librarian and the first woman to direct a branch library in Massachusetts, where she was head of Boston's West End Branch for many years. A prominent figure in the Boston Jewish community, she is best known as the founder of Jewish Book Week, which began when Goldstein organized a display of Jewish books at the Boston Public Library in 1925. Rachel Kamin has been a synagogue librarian for over 20 years and is currently the Director of the Joseph and Mae Gray Cultural & Learning Center at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park, Illinois. She serves on the Association of Jewish Libraries New Jewish Fiction Award Committee and contributes articles and book reviews to BookLinks, School Library Journal, Jewish Book World, Judaica Librarianship, Library Journal, and AJL Reviews. She contributed a chapter on recommended children’s books to The Tot Shabbat Handbook: A Practical Guide for Engaging Young Families in Congregational Life edited by Paula Feldstein (URJ Press, 2010) and co-authored a chapter about Jewish children’s literature for Reading and Teaching with Diverse Nonfiction Children’s Books: Representations and Possibilities, to be published in the summer of 2021 by the National Council for Teachers of English. She facilitates book discussions for five Chicago area synagogues as well as for other organizations and private groups. Rachel holds a BA in history from Grinnell College and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Michigan. In addition, Rachel has been a member of AJL for at least 20 years and has attended the AJL Conference regularly. After the decision was made to not hold the conference live in Chicago in 2020 as planned, Rachel restructured the face-to-face conference that she had planned, into AJL’s first Virtual Conference. This year, Rachel is coordinating all the programming for the 2021 Virtual Conference and working with the planning committee to ensure that the divisions get the program they desire. This year she has also been moderating AJL’s “Serving Students” Virtual Roundtable and facilitated the Purim book discussion. Since the spring of 2020, Rachel has delivered over 20 Zoom presentations on Jewish fiction for Hadassah, the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, American Jewish University, and the Judaica Network of Metropolitan Chicago, as well as for synagogues and Jewish groups across the country. She also facilitates book discussions for five Chicago area synagogues as well as for other organizations and private groups. In addition to all of the above, Rachel has been the chair of the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee, continues to provide Bibliography for the AJL Bibliography files, and recently accepted
