[ha-Safran] Children's books

2024-01-25 Thread Hindishe Lee via Hasafran
A little while ago, someone asked about children's books that are pro-Israel
To counter all the anti-Israel propaganda.
I don't recall if this book was mentioned:
Z is for Zionism: Introduce your child to the true, inspiring story of Israel
and the Jewish people
by Ze'ev
Zion
"Take your child (6+) on the soul-stirring journey of the Jewish people through
history up to the Zionist dream becoming a reality. Introduce your child to the
Jewish people's return to the promised land, and the important role Israel
plays in securing a Jewish future. Among other things, this book is a response
to the popular children's book P is for Palestine, which promotes violence
against Israel. Gone are the days when our children can grow up innocent. They
are now inundated with anti-American/anti-Israel propaganda online, at school
and in the media. This book is a small measure to push back against the
misinformation children may be exposed to. For some, Zionism has become a bad
word that can't be uttered in public. This is nonsense. We need to teach our
children to be proud Zionists. Age appropriate lessons included in this book: -
Introduction to Judaism - History of Israel - Israel as a force for good in the
world - Importance of Israel for Jewish self defense - Discussion of
anti-semitism - Palestinian Arab rejection of Israel About the author, Ze'ev
Zion: I work professionally countering the enemies of Israel and the Jewish
people. In the past I worked for influential Jewish and pro-Israel
organizations. Unfortunately, too many fellow Jews, who mean well, don't
believe in proudly defending our identity and homeland. As a result, young Jews
are growing up and embracing values antithetical to Judaism. I was compelled to
write this book in order to provide a way for our children to understand the
facts about Israel, in an age appropriate manner, before they are exposed to
the many anti-semitic lies that pervade our society online, at school and in
the media. Passages from the book: Thousands of years ago, the ruler of the
universe, God, made a covenant with Abraham, the very first Jew. A covenant is
like an agreement. God promised to give the land of Israel to the Jewish
people. Later on, God gave his commandments, which are like rules, to the Jews
in the Torah. It is these three things-God, Torah and Israel-that form the
foundation of Judaism... ...Some didn't like that the Jews introduced God and
moral demands into the world. Others told lies about Jews and blamed them for
problems they didn't create. While others didn't like that the Jews were
different than them. This poor treatment of Jews is called anti-semitism...
...For thousands of years, the land of Israel was conquered and ruled by many
different groups, including the Romans, Muslims, Greeks and Turks. But none of
them had the same historical, legal or God-given right to the land as the
Jews... ...After the Holocaust Jews swore that they would Never Again allow
something like that to happen. It became even more clear why Zionism was so
important. The Jewish people needed to return to Israel, not only because it
belonged to them, but also so they could join together with one another and
defend themselves... ...Israel tried to make peace over and over again with the
Palestinian Arabs. Israel offered to share the land with them and even agreed
to give up part of Israel to create a Palestinian state. But the Palestinian
Arabs were not interested... ...Israel does an excellent job defending itself.
Israel has one of the most powerful militaries in the world. Israel is strong,
smart, confident, successful and gives Jews all around the world pride...
...Israel is a free country that treats all of its citizens fairly, even the
ones that aren't Jewish. Israel is the only country in the Middle East that
truly lets its citizens choose who leads them. This is called democracy...
...When there are serious problems around the world, like hurricanes or
earthquakes, Israel sends over experts to help. When there was a devastating
earthquake in Haiti, Israel was one of the first countries to send crews to
treat the injured and clean up the destruction... ...Israel and the United
States have a special relationship..."

[ha-Safran] Children's books on geniza

2020-03-10 Thread rhaus_com--- via Hasafran
Dear Hasafranim,
Our synagogue will be staging a ritual burial for our ripped/ruined etc sacred
books/scrolls etc, to be attended by the entire religious school. Our religious
school director asked if I had a picture book on either such a burial or on the
concept of geniza.
Of course I don't have anything for children (plenty for adults). The closest I
have are Sofer: The Story of a Torah Scroll by Eric Ray and The Patchwork Torah
by Alison Ofanansky (I'm planning to purchase How It's Made: Torah Scroll, also
by Ofanansky, but I don't think that will help much).
I've searched Amazon and the Jewish Values Finder, but there doesn't seem to be
any picture books on scroll burial or genizot. Anyone know of any children's
books out there?
Thanks,

Re: [ha-Safran] Children's books

2018-03-29 Thread Fred Isaac
First, I don't recommend classifying Judaica in Dewey. I like Elazar, but
Weine is an acceptable alternative.

My preference for children's books is by type: Holidays (general "all year"
books and devoted to specific festivals go in different places); Holocaust
can be divided in several ways, and I've done that as well (Biography,
fiction, non-fiction). General fiction, and non-fiction can be shelved
alphabetically by author. That's a start. From there, use your judgment and
the wants/needs of your community.

Re: [ha-Safran] Children's books

2018-03-28 Thread Aileen Grossberg
I may be unorthodox but I classify picture books about holidays and Israel in
with the non-fiction although the MARC record says fiction. Patrons-especially
teachers or kids- browsing are more likely to find items if they are all
together because they don't use the OPAC

Books that are just stories I classify as JE (to mimmic our public library) and
file by author.

Of course some items are questionable . I use my judgement.

[ha-Safran] Children's Books

2016-04-21 Thread Lea Kirshenberg
Dear friends,

I joined your group a very short time ago and I am very happy to belong to
this group and would like to wish you a very happy hag!

I would like to introduce myself:

My name is Lea Kirshenberg. I was born in Argentina and made alyia with my
family when I was a teenager. I studied in Israel - Jerusalem Hebrew
University - B.A. in English and French, Tel Aviv University - M.A. in
Education - Syllabus Design in Language Education and Bar Ilan UNIVERSITY
 - Ph.D in Language Education.

I teach in Seminar Hakibbutzim part-time, having retired from Levinsky
College of Education as Head of the English Dept.

I live with my family in Tel Aviv.

I would like you to visit my *site * and
see the books I have published and the weekly teaching tips I post on the
site (my pedagogical blog).

My new children's book *Me too
* is now on
sale at Amazon both in the kindle and paperback version. It is a story
(about 30 pages of rhymes and colorful illustrations for children aged 3-8)
about a little dog that wants more and more. He wants to be bigger, richer,
etc. Children can follow his adventures and learn to cope with jealousy and
envy. The book will soon appear in Hebrew as well and will also be sold
online. It is supposed to be part of a series of books where the main
character - a lovely little dog named Puggy that children can easily
identify with - learns to cope with feelings of jealousy, low self esteem,
anxiety caused by moving to a new place, etc.

I will be very happy to hear your comments.

Let me wish you again a very warm

*חג שמח!!*

You should definitely check the Jewish Values Finder on the AJL website. Search
under the subject "God" When you click on a title in the result, you'll get a

[ha-Safran] CHILDREN'S BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL.doc

2013-04-23 Thread Paula Fine
Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for recent children's
books about Isreal. Almost half of the responses I received were from
librarians asking for the results of my query. It looks like we're all
searching for new, quality books about Israel. If any children's authors
or publishers read this listserve, maybe you will be inspired to fill an
obvious need in Jewish publishing.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL

from Hasafran

Herman, Charlotte. First Rain.
When Abby moves with her family to Israel, where it does not rain all
summer, she misses her grandmother and remembers the fun they used to
have splashing in puddles together.

Albert Whitman, 2010.

Lehman-Wilzig, Tami. Zvuvi's Israel.
Zvuvi, an enthusiastic fly, takes his cousin Zvuvah--and the reader--on
a fast-paced tour of Israel.
Kar-Ben, 2009.

Sofer, Barbara. Keeping Israel Safe: Serving in the Israel Defense
Forces.
Profiles four teenagers who are joining the Israel Defense Forces and
discusses what their responsibilities will be once they enlist and the
history of Israeli military services. This is appropriate for middle
school.
Kar-Ben, 2008.

Can you let me know what you find. It is hard to find such books. A few
recent ones are The Cats on Ben Yehuda Street and First Rain but they
are for the younger range of your request.

Arlene

5 years ago I did a bibliography for Israel's 60th bd for AJL.

I'm attaching it. One side is adult, the other children. A few of them
may be too dated by now.

(If I have the website palestinefacts.org on it, scratch it. It was a
ZOA website and was excellent, but it seems to have been hacked and is
full of hate propaganda now. In fact, probably ignore the websites
altogether; they change so fast).

2013-04-12 Thread pfine
Can you recommend recently published titles about Israel for children ages
6-11? I need to replace some out-of-date books in my collection. Thanks in
advance for any suggestions you can provide.
