Re: [ha-Safran] Recommendation needed: free library software

2018-06-25 Thread Emily Bergman
I also recommend LibraryThing. Basically free and very easy to use. It's
in the cloud, so there's no software for you to maintain. There's no
circulation system, I think, but I just use old fashioned pockets and
cards, since we are too small to be issuing any kind of library card. The
Hebrew issue might make a difference for you, but I just transliterate my
Hebrew books. I also suggest you look at the AJL knowledgebase and
hasafran archives. This question comes up regularly, and many of us have
posted before.

Good luck,
Emily

Sorry, I meant paying for Surpass. Paying for LibraryCat is fine because it is
so cheap (I’m just not sure that it is the right interface for us).

Hi Micah and Shira,
I use Surpass in my library but our patrons are able to log on to our catalog
on their phone or computer by using a new account I created through
LibraryThing called TinyCat. The TinyCat feature is more like a library
data-base and more library friendly for patrons than the original LibraryThing
which is used by me for data entry. Here is a link to our library account so
you can see how it works. Temple members can see the new books as they are
accessioned, find my reviews, and actually reserve a book through this link.

As part of the AviChai Bookshelf program, we worked closely with Harry Chan at
OPALS to develop not only a Hebrew-friendly program but also one that has a
union catalog of the holdings of day school libraries throughout the US and
Canada.

It should be a helpful tool for both collection development and cataloging.

Re: [ha-Safran] Recommendation needed: free library software

Free programs are never really without expenses. You may find you put in a
lot of work and then the system won't do what you need to be done. Spend
the money to get a real system that will grow with you. I like OPALS and
it is very Hebrew friendly. It imports Z39.50 records so that copy
cataloging is easy.

[ha-Safran] Recommendation needed: free library software

2018-06-22 Thread Shira London
Our adult education division has a small library and would like to have a
way to keep track of the books and check them in and out. An
administrative assistant will handle the details once I have gotten them up
and running. If anyone can recommend user friendly library software that
is either free or inexpensive, I'd be so appreciative!

Many thanks,
