[ha-Safran] Upcoming retirement

2019-12-19 Thread James Rosenbloom via Hasafran
Dear friends and colleagues -- I will be retiring after 43 years at
Brandeis. Monday will be my last day at work. I've enjoyed my years of
involvement with AJL and my interactions with many of you. I do not plan to
attend future conferences, but will remain a member. I will always be happy
to assist AJL in any way that I can.

I will be keeping my Brandeis email address, and my phone numbers are
listed on the AJL website.

Jim

[ha-Safran] upcoming retirement

2021-01-12 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,

I want to let you know that I will retire from my position as the Metadata
Librarian for Hebraica and Judaica at Stanford University Libraries during the
mid- to late Spring, 2021. The past thirty-one years of the sharing of
learning, knowledge and professional practices among our community have been
extraordinary. I am not sure if such collegiality and synergies exist among
other library communities.

So many of the professional relationships that I developed over this period
have crossed over into personal friendships that will continue to last long
after I officially leave.

My warmest wishes, appreciation and thanks to the entire Association of Jewish
Libraries for being a foundation of my professional growth and life.

Sincerely, Heidi Lerner

Re: [ha-Safran] Upcoming retirement

2019-12-20 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
As someone who has had the honor and pleasure of working closely with Jim
on a number of AJL projects and programs, especially in RAS where we first
collaborated on the Judaica Reference and Bibliography Committee (JR&BC), I
thank him for all of his hard work as a dedicated member of AJL and RAS and
as vice-chair and chair of the JR&BC, vice-president and president of RAS
and, of course, AJL. In addition, he chaired several AJL Annual
Conferences, a difficult and very time- and energy-consuming challenge. I
could go on and on listing his all his accomplishments, but there are so
many, forgive me for not recalling them all. Brandeis and AJL are
definitely going to miss him.

So, Jim, AJL Annual Conference will not be the same without you, but I
personally want to wish you a very long, healthy, and happy retirement and
hope that I'll see you again somewhere down the line before too long.
Mazel-tov on your new "position." You deserve some down time, but knowing
you, I'll bet you'll find ways to be active and contribute more to both
Judaica and all-around librarianship as well, but don't feel compelled as
you've certainly done so much for Judaic studies over the years and deserve
a rest. I wish you much enjoyment and satisfaction in all your upcoming
endeavors. *Yasher-koyekh* and *kol ha-kavod, *Jim!

In appreciation and with my best wishes,
Elliot

2019-12-21 Thread Sukenic, Harvey via Hasafran
While I've personally sent my wishes to Jim, I want to thank him for a few more
things. I first met Jim when I started as a grad student in Jewish history at
Brandeis 42 years ago. He was always helpful in my years of grad school with
his amazing bibliographic knowledge. I worked for 2 years in his office as a
grad student quick cataloging Hebrew books and he was a great teacher and
supervisor. Jim, along with Ann Abrams, has been the main force behind the
annual meetings of the New England Jewish Librarians. I worked on two Boston
AJL conferences with Jim and his attentions to details is amazing. He has
always been willing to provide advice when I've sought his advice on issues at
the Hebrew College Library. He most recently agreed to be a consultant as
Hebrew College plans for a library of the future when we move to a new building
in a few years. I will try not to cut too much into his retirement reading time

I would like to add my words of congratulations and thanks to all of the
others! Jim, you provided outstanding counsel to the chairpersons and the
planning committee throughout the preparations for and wrap-up after the AJL
Jubilee Conference in Silver Spring, Md. In 2015. You patiently and helpfully
answered so many of my questions. You’ve been such a treasure to the
organization, and your 2018 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award was so richly deserved.
I wish you all my very best in your retirement. Thank you!

Dear Jim,

One of the things I most value at AJL is the camaraderie and mentorship that
takes place in conferences and Council or Board meetings. Unofficially,
unassumingly, you taught me and others who served with you on AJL leadership
roles (2008–2012) financial responsibility, paying attention to details, and
thoughtfulness.

I was grateful when you agreed to join the editorial board of Judaica
Librarianship in 2012 and am happy that you plan to stay on the editorial
board, where your professional experience and sound advice are always welcome.

Thank you,
Rachel

Dear friends and colleagues -- I will be retiring after 43 years at Brandeis.
Monday will be my last day at work. I've enjoyed my years of involvement with
AJL and my interactions with many of you. I do not plan to attend future
conferences, but will remain a member. I will always be happy to assist AJL in
any way that I can.

I will be keeping my Brandeis email address, and my phone numbers are listed on

2021-01-13 Thread Michelle Chesner via Hasafran
Dear Heidi,

I speak for myself (and I'm sure many others!), when I say THANK YOU is not
nearly enough for all of the tremendous work you have done - for AJL and
Judaica librarianship and cataloging and digital humanities and so much
more! You were one of the first people I met when I joined AJL - you
welcomed me warmly and never hesitated to answer my (sometimes very
convoluted) questions around cataloging and metadata.

I'd love to say you should never retire, but since you very much deserve
it, I want to wish you, a very happy and fulfilling retirement, and I warn
you that I will continue to be in touch :)

My very best,
Michelle

Re: [ha-Safran] upcoming retirement

2021-01-25 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Heidi,

Mazel-tov on your upcoming retirement. You have been such a strong and
very active member and supporter of AJL for over three decades. Your
contributions, especially in your realms of expertise, notably cataloging
and metadata, have been too numerous to begin to list. You have also been
very helpful in AJL, at Stanford, and way beyond in providing answers
outside of your "niche" as well by presenting timely and useful
information on research, humanities, and social sciences reference
inquiries among others. You were one of the first people I met at my very
first AJL Conference (née Convention) back in 1991 in Miami Beach, and it
was always a pleasure to see you each year at subsequent annual gatherings
at which I always learned something unique and valuable from your
presentations and just from casual conversations.

I hope that you will stay active in AJL where your many contributions have
always benefited your colleagues and the Association immeasurably. I
greatly appreciate having had the opportunity to work with you over the
years and value your friendship as well as your collegiality. I wish you
great success upon whatever roads you take going forward.

All the very best,
Elliot

2021-01-27 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear Elliot,

Thank you so much for your kind words. Indeed we both had our beginnings with
AJL the same convention. It seems and is so long ago. I have always enjoyed
and learned from our professonal and personal friendships.

Your commitment to AJL has always been a source and inspiration.

My warmest and best wishes.

Sincerely, Heidi
