As one who lived through the riots here in LA (it was scary) I couldn't
agree with Andrea more.
Thank you for telling it truthfully because it was off the wall violence
and craziness and does not equate to teaching children anything about
bullying.

Re: [ha-Safran] Can we all just get along ?

2012-05-02 Thread chapters
I have an enormous respect to Andrea Rapp. I was puzzled why the policemen were
found not guilty. I did not mean to say that Rodney King’s book belongs in a
Jewish library when there are enough book on this subject. I recommend Marcia
Posner’s excellent bibliography of books includes suggestions for activities.
Thank you Andrea, for your remark. I, basically, wish to encourage Hasafran
readers to attend the 2012 convention.

I have to disagree with the idea of putting this new book on a
bibliography about "bullying." I remember the riots following the trial &
verdict featured the shooting of innocent Korean-Americans and torching their
businesses. I'd call that a lot more than bullying. As for the verdict on
the policemen, similar to a case in today's news, it turned out that news media
edited the tape, they omitted a chunk of it, when Mr. King, hopped up on drugs
and alcohol fought off all efforts of the police to confine him; the jury saw
the entire tape, the rest of us didn't - maybe that affected their verdict, or
maybe all 12 jurors were racists, I don't know, but I don't think it's a good
idea to excuse or explain the days of massive rioting and pulling of innocent
passer-bys from their cars and beating them and to teach kids that it was all a
response to the bullying of Rodney King.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Rodney King story.
Bookstores and libraries display his new book THE RIOT WITHIN (Harper One, NY
2012). For those who are too young to remember, he was the victim of police
brutality towards an Afro American in Los Angeles. Riots erupted when the
policemen, who beat him till he almost died, were acquitted.

I suggest adding King’s new book to the bibliography on bullying but,
I post this on Ha-Safran for a different reason. Shortly after the riots I
visited Los Angeles for one of my first AJL conventions. The memory of damage
to the city as a result of the riots and the convention are still fresh on my
mind. The convention committee elected amazing local talents as presenters. The
friends that I made in LA 20 years ago are still my best source for
Information for resources that cannot be found on the internet.

I encourage all of you to come to the convention. The networking as
well as the sessions that are offered for this year promise to stay with you
for years to come.
