Reminder: Natural Language Processing and its Applications in Hebraica
Cataloging presentation tomorrow!

The ASME Division cordially invites you to a presentation on “Natural Language
Processing and its Applications in Hebraica Cataloging” by Dr. Avi Shmidman of
Bar-Ilan University in Israel. The presentation is scheduled for October 31
from 1:30pm to 2:30pm EDT. This will be a hybrid event, held both via Zoom and
in person in the ASME Conference Room in LM541. Seating is limited, so please
email Jessalyn Zoom at j...@loc.gov in advance if you plan
to attend in person. We are looking forward to having you join us on October
31st !
Title: Natural Language Processing and its Applications in Hebraica Cataloging
Presenter: Dr. Avi Shmidman, Bar-Ilan University, Israel
Date and Time: October 31, 1:30pm-2:30pm EDT, via Zoom and in LM541 Conference
Room
Synopsis: One of the most exciting advances of the last few years in the world
of Natural Language Processing was the release of the BERT algorithm
("Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers"). To what extent
does this algorithm provide the means to understand nuances of Hebrew text, and
how can this algorithm help us with the specific challenges of Hebrew text
processing? These are the questions that Dr. Shmidman will explore in this
lecture. Dr. Shmidman will demonstrate how Hebrew-specific BERT models provide
the ability to disambiguate Hebrew words, to identify mistakes in large Hebrew
textual corpora, to expand Hebrew abbreviations, to improve Hebrew optical
character recognition, to clarify syntactic ambiguities, and more. There will
be discussion at the end of the presentation on how these capabilities can help
automate and expedite cataloging and transliteration tasks regarding Hebraica
collections.

Hi all,

Hopping on the Romanization help train here. Thanks in advance for your time
and assistance!

I'm cataloging a reproduction of ספר קול צהלה (original OCLC: #500291215) and
am stuck on the word ההונן in the subtitle. I've attached the title page - as
you can see, the reproduction isn't crystal clear, but I feel certain that the
spelling is ההונן rather than one of the ה's being a ח, but I could definitely
be wrong. A keyword search of this word didn't lend me any results, and I can't
seem to track it down in Even Shoshan (pages I consulted also attached).

In context, the whole subtitle phrase makes me think it is a sort of
conjugation or (mis?)spelling of הון, so my best guess at the Romanization is
ha-honan.

Curious what others think and would appreciate any perspectives!

Best,

Lili

P.S. - if anyone can't view the PDF attachment, let me know. I originally
attached it to the email as a separate file (versus a OneDrive link), but the
listserv said it was too big a file to send out. My apologies if that means
this email went out twice...!

Re: [Heb-NACO] [EXT] - RAS-AJL Cataloging Committee meeting and call for agenda items

2023-05-16 Thread Marlene Schiffman via Heb-naco
Hi,
How do we advance the Christian biases in subject headings? Are we to assume
that the only way to change them is to propose each one individually? That’s a
lot of work. I think it’s similar to the case of Marranos which was changed by
some agreement that it was not a proper term. Of course, each one has to be
worked on, but as a set of terms, they have to be addressed as needing
modification.

Re: [Heb-NACO] [EXT] - FW: Invitation for feedback on RBMS terms for prejudicial works

2023-04-18 Thread Marlene Schiffman via Heb-naco
I looked at this list. They changed Anti-Semitic literature to Anti-Semitic
works. I don’t think that makes much of a difference. But we (Jewish people)
were never happy with the term antisemitism in the first place. Who are these
“Semites” that people hate? There are Anti-Catholic works. Why can’t we have
Anti-Jewish works? I am surprised that someone didn’t complain about that. But
I guess that antisemitism is such an accepted term these days that LC can’t
change what people call it by a cross reference in their catalog.
It’s like African-American which was written against recently by Morgan
Freeman. He said it’s not an appropriate term because no other group is
identified by a continent. But it’s the accepted term. What else would you call
it? Like antisemitism, that’s what people use. So calling it something else
would be confusing. Like the term Orthodox Judaism. We (the Orthodox Jewish
people) don’t like that term either, but that’s what’s used.
I just got the booklet about indigenous people headings. I saw there are so
many headings like Indians. I think the Indians don’t mind that term, even
though they are not from India. They don’t seem to resent it. (They just resent
sports teams using names like “Warriors” or “Braves.”). So this seems to be a
Pandora’s box—all these sensitive terms .

Subject: [PCCLIST] Invitation for feedback on RBMS terms for prejudicial works

The Prejudicial Materials Working Group of RBMS’s Controlled Vocabularies
Editorial Group invites your feedback on approximately 50 proposed new and
revised terms for the RBMS Controlled Vocabulary for Rare Materials Cataloging
(RBMS CVRMC). The Controlled Vocabularies Editorial
Group
(CVEG), a committee of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the
Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), maintains RBMS CVRMC.

RBMS CVRMC is a thesaurus of genre and form terms that are specific to the
needs of the rare materials community. However, the proposed terms, used for
indexing works that are prejudicial in nature or related to systems of
oppression, also have wider applicability beyond rare materials. Genre and form
terms are used to provide controlled description of what resources are (e.g.
dictionaries, biographies, diaries, correspondence), rather than what they are
about.

The working group has reviewed extant terminology in the thesaurus to broaden
terms from “literature” to “works” and revise selected existing scope notes. We
have also drafted new terms for types of prejudicial works that were not
previously represented in the thesaurus as well as terms related to colonialism
and enslavement. The proposals within the Prejudicial works hierarchy are not
meant to be exhaustive but to provide a scaffold for the future. CVEG
encourages the community to propose additional narrower terms to further expand
this section of the thesaurus.

The proposed terms can be viewed as a hierarchical
list
and as a comparison of terms with their original
forms.
Terms are generally also viewable on
id.loc.gov,
but they may have outdated information that has not yet been updated to
reflect the working group’s most recent decisions. The documents linked above,
which match what is found in the feedback survey, are the most up-to-date
version.

Greetings,

I write as AJL liaison to the AJS (Association for Jewish Studies). This past
December, AJL organized a very successful professional development panel for
the AJS conference in Chicago. In a roundtable format, several AJL members
responded to prepared questions about our career choices and what our jobs
entail. Then we opened the floor to questions from the audience. What began as
an opportunity to expose scholars of Jewish Studies to the possibility of
considering a career in librarianship and as, in addition, doing a great deal
to explain to our audience what it is that Judaica librarians do. I would like
to continue this new tradition, and, in the process, be sure to include Judaica
librarians who work in a variety of different specific library jobs in our
panel. Ideally, I would also like to include an archivist, and perhaps a museum
professional. Panel members will need to join the AJS (there is a mildly
discounted rate for AJL members!*) and to pay for and attend the annual
conference in person, in Boston, December 18-20, 2022.

If you are planning to attend AJS 2022 and would be interested in participating
in this librarianship-career development panel, please write
me by Thursday, April 28.

All best,
Rachel

**External Email**

I encountered this issue for my Lexicon as well for entering dates in Wikidata
(and encyclopedic entries in the Hebrew Wikipedia).

My opinion is that we should put the later date and only in cases we know the
two dates then to prefer the Hebrew date. Our life is complicated enough. We
have a tool to convert Hebrew calendar to the Gregorian calendar and
vis-a-versa
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.hebcal.com/converter__;!!KGKeukY!iFRm6eankEYTT6HeKl4BM93NTZcofWymcIwOSPgfDA01HgcEXK3MfUwzxP7c_dPOwgl5$

Is it really critical to know if someone was born in the evening before sunset
or after sunset? (the only case for us will be if someone was born/died on
December 31, 1969 or January 1, 1970 – this changes the heading in the 100
field).

I have so many stories I encountered while doing my biographical research for
“my authors” where the Hebrew date is totally different then the Gregorian date
on tombstones, in encyclopedias (Tidhar for example), Lexicons (Kressel and
others). I saw letters by people who wrote that their Zeide told them they were
born on Erev Shabbes of Hanukka, of תר"ע 1910 (Erev Shabbes of Hanukka was
December 1909 and not 1910)

Remember – we have a backlog of Sforim we need to catalog – not too much time
to spend on the issue if someone was born or died before or after sunset.

At this opportunity I invite you to view my working document in which I record
the biographical information

Re: [Heb-NACO] [EXT] - RAS Catalogers Winter Meeting - call for agenda items

2020-12-22 Thread Marlene Schiffman via Heb-naco
Is this an appropriate agenda item?

New class number schedule for history of Judaism by region or country:
(BM201-449). The current schedule reflects some general geographic approach,
which allocates some sparsely populated countries with little Jewish presence a
full class number, while Hungary has just one cutter under "Other European
countries".

Dear all,

I hope you are well and that you had a great Hanukkah. This is a quick reminder
that we will hold our RAS Catalogers Winter Meeting on January 11,
9:30am-11:30am EST. This is our first mid-year meeting experience, as usually
we only meet at the annual AJL conference in the Summer. As it happens in our
annual meeting, only the committee members get to vote but all the Hebrew
catalogers are invited to participate.

At this time, this is a call for agenda items. Please send any subjects you
think we should discuss.

The members of the RAS Cataloging committee are really looking forward to this
opportunity to talk and work together!

Dear all,

Following our conversation at the AJL conference, I wanted to touch base
regarding an initiative.

As you know UMD has just started several projects for Special Collections that
use Wikidata as the authority management platform. In the last few months we
have been training a small group of our catalogers, briefly reviewed their
progress, and involved them in the projects. The projects are also part of the
PCC WIkidata pilot program.

At this point there are a few more UMD people that have manifested interest in
going through the same training, which is essentially a 90 minutes session
taught by Sarah Hovde and myself. We are pondering expanding this to other
institutions. I wanted to check with the Hebraica cataloger community and see
if enough people would be interested either in joining our small UMD cohort or
organizing a separate, Judaica specific group. Please share your thoughts on
this.

A quick additional note regarding the RAS cataloging committee: we are closing
down on membership. At this point we are still missing one member and we hope
to ultimate details in a few weeks. Once everything is settled, we are
considering having a Winter zoom meeting in addition to the annual. We'll keep
you posted.

Looking forward to the New Year, which we hope to be much better!

Shalom,

As the RDA Steering Committee finishes up work on 3R, they've been discussing
the appendices in the current Toolkit. I've asked, and been granted permission,
to have the largest Hebraica cataloging policy bodies (AJL, LC, and NLI) make a
recommendation about the fate of the Hebrew and Yiddish abbreviation appendix.

The Latin script abbreviations are all for recorded elements. So the question
about our appendix is:
Are the abbreviations specified used in recorded elements or do they belong to
transcribed elements?

If we're talking recorded elements – things that you consistently change from
what's on the resource (as we used to change edition statements to ed. or
מהד'), the appendix needs to stay. If all the terms are found in transcribed
elements, those we copy from the resource, then the list more properly belongs
as a resource in the AJL documentation than as a mandate in the Toolkit. In
Israel we don't use any of these terms in recorded elements.

Here's the list:

[cid:image001.png@01D665A1.72CA9F30]

Do you know of cataloging agencies which would replace the term used on a
resource with the abbreviation when creating a record?

Hello Collective Wisdom, please remind me: if there’s an entry in E-Sh., even
if it ends with a “see also”, is that sufficient justification for romanizing
the word as a word as opposed to a compound? E.g. בגלל has a direct entry, so
I’d think it would be romanized biglal (NOT bigelal because as a whole word,
the sheva would be considered merahef, ignored in romanization), but the entry
also says “see גלל”. So which is it: Biglal or Bi-gelal?
