I should stay more on top of my email to defend myself appropriately! =)

For a slightly contrasting viewpoint, I've *learned* alot going through
the source builds. I've also hosed my computer a number of times
learning what I shouldn't do =)

My friend is actually wget --help ;) There is no description such a

Is there any way to mount under hurd Linux partition greater then 1G ?

It is worth a try, let us know what happened.

Well, the Debian packages are useful to fulfill the package dependencies.
The packages will work with them, for example on a remote X display over the
network.

If you really want to try to run native X servers, you can try to just get
the server binary from the X site and follow Uchiyama's instructions anyway.
It should work, because the versions are very similar, IIRC.

Or you can try to fake Debian packages and use everything from Uchiyama.

Anyway, there are only two times you can download it, the (comparable) small
Debian packages from alpha.gnu.org and whatever you get from Uchiyama
(official X site).

Thanks,
Marcus

If that's not easy, then I could just follow Uchiyama's instructions
in his page. Would that word witht the current hurd release?

I'm asking because these are long download sessions, and I wouldn't
like to download X too many times (different versions, etc). :)

All of the packages in binary-all and binary-hurd install and work; but are
subject to dependencies. There are emacs and vim; and TeX works fine. You just
cannot run X. It is like logging in from a Windows PC into a UNIX box.

Get screen; this will give you multiple windows on you Hurd

Probably not, but I have not tried others (too much on the plate).

Yes, although the situation is not too worse. TeTex works fine, for example.
Missing packages are either the result of binary all packages (which are
installed in all platforms simultaneouosly), or version skew.

Marcus

wget --retr-symlinks

wget(1) is your friend.

Download Debian packages for Hurd

2000-04-17 Thread Sergey Izvoztchikov

Hi all !

I found a lot of symlinks under subdirectories of
/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-hurd-i386/ of ftp.debian.org
And I could not use wget do grab them :( Wget just creates
symlinks on local disk, as well as ftp and ncftp clients.
What tool I can use to download those symlinked packages ?
I'm using RedHat distribution and I couldn't also compile
dpkg :( I didn't ever find "configure" script inside last
dpkg_1.4.0.35.tar.gz 8(

Any help and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks. Sergey.

I see... And 3.3.3.1 is actually the latest version usable with the
hurd, then...

So I suppose this is the same for other directories, like editors and
tex (there may or may not be installable packages in them)?

Yes. After those are configured, installing packages natively has many
advantages over the dirty cross-install stuff (main advantage is that
preinst scripts are run).

Yes, most likely the easiest thing. If you have two machine, you can use one
as a gateway to the Hurd in your local network.

Unfortunately, no. There are no X packages in the archive. Get libraries and
clients from

ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/hurd/debian

The servers are not packaged at all yet, and it is not straightforward to
install them.

Marcus
