We didn't have google when I was young!! Our cameras used film! And you couldn't see how bad your pictures were until you developed that film!! There was no PCR to sequence your DNA, you ran an agarose gel and hoped for the best!! You could drink the 100% ethanol, there was no denaturing! [Histonet] Counter top immunos
Hello Histo folks Hope everyone is having a great weekI am writing to get some info on immuno kits for staining just by hand, like back when I first started in this field. We are a small lab in Alaska and all of our immunos are sent out of state, We are looking to do some of them here and try to save money, but don't really need a stainer. So are there any kits that are better than others? Is there anyone that does immunos this way that would give some much needed advise??? Again thanks in advance for all the imput... [Histonet] Recycled Xylene
Hello in Histo land. I know it is a subject brought up over and over again but I need to get the opinion of my fellow Histo techs on processing tissue with recycled Xylene. Yes I know it saves money and is better for the earth, but is the quality of the tissue the same??? Coverslipping and clearing slides with it I can see being ok, but processing with it??? It is not 100% after recycling. I could use any thought on the subject. Thanks in advance ___ Histonet mailing list Histonet@lists.utsouthwestern.edu http://lists.utsouthwestern.edu/mailman/listinfo/histonet
[Histonet] Biopsy Run
Morning and Happy Hump day Histo peeps Hope everyone is having a fun filled Lab Week, Here is Alaska we are eating more than usual... Just need to ask one more question regarding my evil nuclear artifact. We have decided it is a processing issue due to the type of cassettes we use. In cutting down the processing time, the reagents are not able to get through the mesh on the cassettes. I have ordered other kinds but due to limited funds (cant get a new labeler) and even with the special pens for writing on cassettes and slides the hand written numbers are fading, I cant use them. My next thought is to lengthen my biopsy run. Would you folks out there share your biopsy run times with me? I don't want to go back to having the over processing issues with the biopsies that occur in the 12 hour, but maybe adding time would help here. Thanks in advance and again hope everyone is having a great Lab week. Kim ___ Histonet mailing list Histonet@lists.utsouthwestern.edu http://lists.utsouthwestern.edu/mailman/listinfo/histonet
[Histonet] Howdy all
Happy Friday Histo peeps Would anyone know of any openings for Histo techs in the Southern Utah area? I have a tech working with me that is looking to relocate from Alaska to Utah to be closer to family. Any info would be great. [Histonet] Medical Grade Microwave
Hello Histo peeps Just wondering where other labs purchased Medical Grade Microwave from. I am told the kind you buy at wal-mart to do special stains is no longer acceptable. Any info on this would be appreciated. Thanks Kimberly ___ Histonet mailing list Histonet@lists.utsouthwestern.edu http://lists.utsouthwestern.edu/mailman/listinfo/histonet
[Histonet] Biopsy Run
Hello out there!!! Just a couple of quick questions...I wrote before with a artifact problem and I thank everyone for their input. Bad thing is, I am still having issues. Would my fellow Histo Techs please share with me the times you use on your Biopsy Run's as well maybe give me some advise on biopsy cassettes. I have used 2 different kind and just cant help but wonder if air getting caught in the cassette may be one of my problems. Thanks in advance for your help...I sure need it. [Histonet] Poor nuclear artifact
Happy Friday Histo people!!! I need some opinions on a processing issue I cant seem to fix. I run a short processing run each night for my small biopsies. With two processors, I rotate so the machine with the newest reagents is the one we run as the biopsy machine. For several weeks now my Pathologist have had issues with one or two blocks a day or one day it was one piece of tissue of many in a GI biopsy block,(only one piece of like 5 were affected the rest were fine) that they are saying has poor nuclear artifact . Most days it is only one block and has happend only once with tissue from the long run. This happens no matter a weekend or over night, fresh reagents or not. I have biopsies come from all over Alaska and in talking with them as well as checking the containers they are submitting in 10% NBF, The stainer is rotated daily so its not a Xylene not clearing the slide problem. I know sections can be thicker in a ribbon but the Pathologist dont seem to think that is the problem either. I have run out of things it could be and could really use some advise. Thanks and have a great weekend ___ Histonet mailing list Histonet@lists.utsouthwestern.edu http://lists.utsouthwestern.edu/mailman/listinfo/histonet
[Histonet] cdj
Hello everyone We recently recieved a case possible positive for CJD. In researching this we have found that they now say Formalin is BAD. As long as I have been a Histo tech it seems the rules were Formalin then Formic acid. But seems there are some studies saying this is no longer enough. Is there anyone out there that has changed and if so What are you doing now??? [Histonet] Traveling Histo Tech
Hello all, A few years back I went on vacation and we used a traveling Histo tech to cover. Back then I thought it was a neat idea and said to myself, when the kids are grown and out of the house I am gonna do that. Well that time has come, so before I started making calls and researching it I wanted to ask my fellow Histo folks what they know about it. Is there still a market for traveling techs? Any information about this would sure be appreciated. [Histonet] Bx sections.
Hello all. We cut 5 levels on each GI block and mount them on one slide. We use the really small disposable molds. There are the big polyps or multiple bx in one container In that case we cut three levels . On our prostate bx we are cutting 3 levels picking up 4 slides of each level. So we end up with 4 identical slides. Well at least close, those are the slides we keep back for the possible Immunos. We attempt to keep to one slide when possible. == The information contained in this message may be privileged and/or confidential and protected from disclosure. [Histonet] patients taking home placentas
I have come across this several times. Each time we grossed the placenta, but did not take specimens. Before they took it home I had to have them sign a release of information as well as paperwork acknowledging they understand that it is a bio-hazard. This same form is also worded to release the hospital of any blame in the event someone gets sick, or it surfaces after a big rain. Not sure if that helps but that is what my Pathologist has be doing. Good luck with this. == The information contained in this message may be privileged and/or confidential and protected from disclosure. [Histonet] Pneumocystis Controls
Hello all Was hoping I could get some info on Pneumocystis Controls. The company I used to get them from has stopped preparing them, and the couple of other companies I have checked with are in short supply, so only selling to customers that buy from them already. [Histonet] Frozen HE
Hello Histo folks I am having a hard time with consistency with my frozen HE. It was always to the Pathologist liking till the last year. I have not changed stains or reagents so I am not sure what may be the problem. Would anyone care to share with me their frozen section HE procedure? Maybe I just need to change the whole process. I do filter and change the stains weekly and reagents as needed, so I am not sure what else to try. [Histonet] Tissue release
Hello Histo net. I have asked before for your help with this but it was a while ago so I could use some more input. How do the other Histology Labs out there handle the release of fetal tissue less than 500 grams or less than 20 weeks? We have had this issue several times in the past few years and each time the hospital and Pathologist have handled it a little differently. I need to submit a policy to the legal folks and am not sure where to start. I think I also need to create a consent form the patient should sign before being release. Any help would be appreciated. [Histonet] Blue haze
Howdy all, I have just changed over to Surgi Path's H E system. With the latest fear of running out of hematoxylin and all my Pathologist wanted us to change over. Its a great stain but we have a bad haze in the background. It is not hurting the tissue or DX at all, but to ME it looks awful. Is there anyone else out there using this? We are not using positive charged slides or anything added to my water bath. Any suggestions Thanks in advance Kimberly Marshall HT (ASCP) == The information contained in this message may be privileged and/or confidential and protected from disclosure. [Histonet] RE; Thanksgiving /gallbladder in vinegar
Howdy all... Its good to see other labs with the issues of specimen going back to the patient. I have twice in the past 4 years had to return a placenta to a patient due to religious ideals. My legal folks seem to feel that the religious reasons out weigh the legal and bio-hazards. No matter what the state law. The vinegar idea is a good one but a whole placenta? ew. And how are some of you handling 20 week fetus??? Another specimen that people ask for. I would think Funeral homes would handle this but not in all cases. Any ideas? Thank you and happy Thanskgiving Kimberly Marshall HT (ASCP) == The information contained in this message may be privileged and/or confidential and protected from disclosure.
