Hello All, I am in the process of developing the Histology budget for next three years. There have been some positive posts about a few processors recently; but if there are more opinions out there (and I know that there are) please let me know. At NSH I had the opportunity to view and hear about the most of the tissue processors on the market. There are several features that I need to consider price, reliability, ease of use/maintenance, timely and quality service, and processing TAT, just to name a few. Fellow Histology professionals you can email/contact me directly and your input is greatly appreciated. RE: [Histonet] artifacts of sectioning
What I have used in the past is a short warm water soak, 10-15 seconds, in the water bath, after facing in and between sections, then placing the block back on ice. I would use a small 200 mL beaker filled with DI water sitting inside the water, it helps reduce junk floating the bath. Be careful to avoid over soaking. My techs tell me that cooling the block better on the ice block makes it go away. i have no personal experience, other than to say that when it occurs, it makes the slide of very poor quality. [Histonet] IHC Validation on microwaved tissue
Hello All, We have new microwave tissue processor, until this purchase all tissue has been placed on a standard VIP processor. My medical director would like for most of our 125 antibodies worked up on microwave processed tissue. I have been challenged with getting specimens to process on the instrument for IHC antibody validation purposes. Initially we will be processing GI biopsy specimens, but we will eventually progress to other biopsy tissues and so on. I have had success getting some colon cancer cases, some tonsil and other tissue. We will be mainly performing H. pylori, which is hard to get a large enough specimen to obtain a sample for this purpose. Anyway I was wondering how other labs are handling validation in this situation. Thank you for your time in this matter. [Histonet] Histo Story
Hello All, I had never heard the before starting as a Histotech trainee in Tulsa, OK. The funny story I wanted to share was similar to some others submitted. My oldest son, at five, was asked by his teacher, What does your father do? He replied, He cuts up dead people. Much to my dismay at the next parent teacher conference I was asked by the teacher what I did for a living and my reply was I am a Histotechnician and a Diener. She then asked, as most people do, What is that?. I began to explain the histology part and that I did autopsies. Then she explained what my son had told her earlier. Knowing that I had not ever told my children that I performed autopsies it came as quite a shock. So I asked my wife if she had even mentioned this to the kids and the answer was of course no. It turns out the babysitter had told them. Needless to say she no longer watches our children. [Histonet] Effects of Inking on Special stains or IHC
Hello All, One of my pathologists asked the following question. Does inking tissue effect special staining or IHC results? I replied that I had never heard of this and not to my knowledge. I thought that if the chromagen was the same color of the dye then there could be some difficulty in deciphering between the two. Therefore, I am wondering if anyone has experienced a problem.
