UNCLASSIFIED Wayne, We have the VCP-3001 cassette printer and we buy the printer ribbon from Leica (800-225-3035). The stock number is V0590001F and it cost us $83.35 per ribbon which we bought several years ago. I don't know if it is the same one for your VCP-2001 but I'm sure when you call them, they can help you. Carol, We just obtained a VIP 6 processor and we have a program for routine overnight processing. It seems to work well. I will send or fax it to you by Monday. The Tissue-tek sales rep that installed and trained us, mentioned about increasing the times in the alcohols for fatty/breast tissue. You can try this and make any adjustments to the program I am sending. We have two stations of formalin at two hours each. Tasha, We have the Excelsior which we received a few weeks ago. We have not used it yet for patient specimens but will very soon. Our test runs went well except some breast tissue (probably cut too thick). Overall, the pathologist was happy with the results. There are many good features, but one of them was the potential savings of alcohol solutions. It has a built in hydrometer that measures the percentage of alcohol in the containers and it will let you know when to change it. We are also looking into the Tissue Tek VIP. We have the 300 model which we like but it is nearing it's life expectancy. To: histonet@lists.utsouthwestern.edu Message-ID: Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Greetings to all histonetters- I have a pathologist that wants to show fibrin in lung. She wants also black nuclei and we tried a Movat's to look at fibrin. The fibrin in the lung is showing up light blue not red! Any suggestions on how to show fibrin distinctly, with black nuclei? thanks! I have removed ceramic; implants; stents and cement using a scalpel and then embedded in paraffin for cuts on a sledge microtome. The detail is beautiful even without the cement present. If you have the capability, a corresponding section in PMMA can be processed. ~ Vicki -- Message: 6 Date: Fri, 07 Aug 2009 15:12:52 -0400 From: Yash Kolambkar Subject: [Histonet] Stain for decalcified GMA embedded bone To: histonet@lists.utsouthwestern.edu

There are some mounting media that harden and form a barrier with optical qualities similar to that of glass. It might not be a perfect solution, but it might work. I think the stuff I used was called Crystal Mount (?). To: histonet@lists.utsouthwestern.edu Date: Tuesday, April 7, 2009, 9:05 AM Hi all, Im looking for some kind of a DIY coverslip or a tape, plastic foil anything usable to cover some large slides (+/- 4.5cm * 15cm = 1.8inch * 5.9inch) containing botanical and zoological sections mounted in Canada Balsam. Does anyone has a (cheap) solution for this? It doesnt need to be pristine optical quality as the slides are primarely intended to be used on an overhead projector in the class room, but the possibility of viewing them under low power (40x - 100x) would be a real advantage. Thanks in advance four your wisdom and knowledge! However, if you put them in a plastic container with a lid on, the shattered glass will be contained and not all over your freezer. When breaking larger glass containers, again place them in the freezer, remove from the freezer after 20 minutes or so, take the lid off, wrap jar in paper towels and hold the ends closed. Wear glovesand eye protection in case shards of glass escape. Strike the jar with a hammer and unroll the paper towel over a garbage can. Rinse the block in tap water to remove any small shards of glass. This is a great way to vent frustration!! Cathy
