Re: Demo Of Cheating in TFC (NoClip+SpeedHack)

2001-10-04 Thread HoundDawg

Well, first of all, you have to watch it a little bit until you start seeing
the cheating messages. Then, you'll see a red HWG running around with his
legs through the floor going really fast (hence the Speed hack) and
mowing down all of the blue... he even goes through the walls (hence the
NoClip hack). You'll see some more messages and eventually a second HWG
doing the same thing.

It's quite simple, actually.
They both run on the HalfLife engine.
90+% of cheats work off the engine, not the mod.
Any sensible admin that does more than 10 minutes of research knows that.

RE: Server STILL Crashes, a LOT

2001-10-04 Thread Stan Hoeppner

Cliffe asked for you to post beta test results to the forum thread linked in
that first paragraph on the www.counter-strike.net page.

You're running the beta 1108a update right? You're still having stability
problems right? Well, post it to that forum page then. Feedback helps them
fix the problems. Instead of repeatedly asking for the solution here, help
the developer fix the problems by giving feedback, as he is asking you to.

Obviously this is a problem with the physical code. The code you are
running is BETA code that you are being asked to give feedback on. Give
your feedback to them! The list members here can't fix that. The
counter-strike guys/Valve can. Give them the feedback they are asking for,
and hope that it helps them fix the problems, and release another stable
update.

OZ server crashes

2001-10-04 Thread emberts

I posted this earlier, but AFAICT, it never made it to the list, so here
goes again. Apoligies if you get this twice:

I've been playing with OZ, and I'm having a hell of a time keeping the
server running. I think it's the bots - the more bots, the faster the server
crashes. If I put 10 bots on the server, it won't run 10 minutes without
crashing. If I put 2 or 3 bots, it runs for longer, sometimes 5-10 hours.
But it eventually crashes. With 1 bot, it might run for a day or two, I
think my record is 60 hours.

Who is running OZ with bots? What has your experience with the bots been,
and what version are you running?

How to prevent Win2000 message hlds.exe has generated errors.....

2001-10-04 Thread emberts

Is there a way to inhibit this message from Win2000? When the server
crashes, sometimes it give me this message:

hlds.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need
to restart the program

I'm using ServerDoc to restart the server when it crashes, but as long as
this message is on the screen, hlds, when it is restarted, gives the error
WARNING: UDP_OpenSocket: port 27015 and terminates. ServerDoc happily
restarts it, and it keeps cycling back and forth until someone goes to the
server and presses the OK button. Then the server will restart and run just
fine. How can I stop Win2000 form displaying the message? I need it to just
shut up the terminate hlds.exe so it can be restarted. Otherwise, my server
is effectively dead in the water until someone can get to the machine.

Capturing Info WAS: Server STILL Crashes, a LOT

2001-10-04 Thread PooKid

Looks like I'm in the same boat . . . I've been trying to track the problem
on my server:

Win2k SP2
HLDS 4108a from server.counter-strike.net running CS.
AdminMod 2.50.07

I know its crashing but I have no way of getting a snapshot of the crash
itself. The log files will write out a complete line then unceremoniously
stop. Anyone know of an easy way to get HLDS to provide a memory dump of
some sort or maybe a way to capture the last couple of lines of the HLDS
window to see if there is some kind of common factor to these crashes?

pookid

I've even made a private (virgin, fresh install no adminmod) server with no
one entering it. Still crashes.

That was posted 9/26 and the follow-up patch was 9/28 ... I haven't heard a

I am of the opinion that I'm running the Mod version using the 1.1.0.8a
HLDS ... Since I'm not running HLTV, the only file that 4.1.0.8a updated
was mp.dll ... Is VALVe now colletively calling Counter-Strike at 1.3 no
matter what release you're running now? My client (uh-oh, this should be

Of course I don't see this on my server cause I'm not running the "GUI"

RE: Server STILL Crashes, a LOT

2001-10-04 Thread Stan Hoeppner

If your server is a CS 1.3 server, read this. It is from the main page at
www.counter-strike.net:

"In addition, we're aware of the server instability that 1.3 is showing. Our
Linux man, Leon, is currently looking into the problem. We'll keep you
updated on that here at the site and perhaps have some beta files to try
out."

RE: 1.3 client computer hangs a lot

2001-10-04 Thread Stan Hoeppner

Did you see the posts earlier today to this list from Valve? There is
apparently a bug that will drop players close to the vacinity where a smoke
grenade is thrown. Valve is working on it.

Do some more probing around on your problem. See if the CS 1.3 clients you
have are being dropped from the server when a smoke nade is dropped near
them.

I have all the latest patches and the latest mp.dll from the 4108a patch ...

Ever since I upgraded to version 1.3 retail. My network
computers hang a lot. Mostly they are simultaneous.
What server bug can do this. I already upgraded to
4108a the new version. My graphic cards are tnt2 m64.
With cs ver 1.1 There is no problem. Anyone got a clue?
Thanks.

OZ server keeps crashing

2001-10-04 Thread emberts

I've been playing with OZ, and I'm having a hell of a time keeping the
server running. I think it's the bots - the more bots, the faster the server
crashes. If I put 10 bots on the server, it won't run 10 minutes without
crashing. If I put 2 or 3 bots, it runs for longer, sometimes 5-10 hours.
But it eventually crashes. With 1 bot, it might run for a day or two, I
think my record is 60 hours.

Who is running OZ with bots? What has your experience with the bots been,
and what version are you running?

I don't know for sure yet, but as an educated guess based on bug reports

happens to all players who have the smoke gren in their PVS.

Server issues with voice communication

2001-10-04 Thread Rob Palkowski

My server has been having a problem with the voice chat added in 1.1.0.8.
After a few hours, it simply stops working. Peoples' bindings to
+voicerecord act as though they are not there. If I skip to the next map,
the problem persists, but if I restart the srever, all is normal again for a
few hours. Any ideas?

RE: 1.1.0.8 On or Off topic??

2001-10-04 Thread Michael Fraser

I disagree. There is plenty of forums for discussion with client-side
issues. However, the number of HLDS specific help groups if far more
limited. Client specific issues, or questions, should be marked with [OT].
I like helping people, but HLDS mailing list is not a place that should be
flooded with "how do I bind a key?" type of questions. This is a resource
for administrators of HL servers. They turn to each other for support, and
turn to valve with questions and suggestions to make administrating HL
servers easier and more effecient.

If you want a more general list, perhaps ask vavle to generate a
"hlsupport@" list.

While I'm not always a huge fan of Deacon, his mentality is needed. The
reason this list is helpful to admins is because it is so heavly admin
related. You make this list more general, and you're going to loose the
admin population. I, along with many others, prefer NOT to filter through
lots of redundant client-side issues. It would be a shame to loose many of
the great admin helpers that exist on this list.

Your own argument, "the client is useless without the server" supports my
claim moreso than yours. Yes, the client's important, but without the
server it's useless. So perhaps a definite support for server ONLY issues
is what's needed here. Perhaps every client-side issue that's posted should
get thwacked.

Reviewing VAVLe's participation in this list, you can tell that it's almost
100% directed towards administrators, through either announcements of known
bugs so that when clients yell "why am I overflowing with my ATi card..." we
can provide them the answer. I've yet to see Eric respond to anything that
wasn't tied to how HL\HLDS operated, known issues, or upcoming patch
releases. True, I've only got mail dating back to 5/10/01 (I deleted
everything prior to that).

Something I think list members should keep in mind with regard to on or off
topic threads, is that in the client/server paradigm, the client is useless
without the server.

Thus, regarding the recent 1108 update, some of the issues it has created,
the nature of this list, AND Valve's direct participation in this list, I
think these types of questions are well suited here.

It is my opinion (and I would hope the opinion of other members as well)
that this list is a resource for all people involved with serving or
adminning HL servers. If a member has a client question or issue, why not
discuss it and help with the resolution? Isn't the purpose of this list to
help others who are having problems? I think many of us have forgotten
that...

I may be wrong, but I don't know of any mailing list or forum for client
questions that could have successfully handled this issue for him. If this
is not the case, please let me know where to go for issues of this type.

I've found over the last year that this list is the best source of knowledge
for ALL aspects of HL, not just HLDS.

Before slamming someone for being what you consider [OT], think first about
what other avenue the poster might pursue to get his/her question/issue
answered or resolved. If you can't suggest one, don't hammer the poster for
being supposedly [OT]. If you can, direct the poster of the [OT] message to
the appropriate location he/she should visit to resolve the problem. This
list exists to help other gamers, not to discourage them. I was kind of
hoping that with Deacon being gone from the list now, that this kind of
mentality would gradually disappear from the list...

If none of the other list members feels like answering the question, they
won't.

2001-10-04 Thread HL Server

When you admin a server, you get client questions from visitors ... I find
running the server, I have client issues as well simply because I actually
play on my server ... Because of the sometimes client question, I get
answers to questions I didn't even ask ...

I agree that the sometimes client question does have a correlation to
running the server ... But if simply end users were abusing our wonderful
admin powers via this list, yes, that would bother me seeing as there's
already a forum for this, and the mail traffic would triple ...

The autoupdate doesn't find the hl patch, only patches for opfor and blueshift (which
I have). I NEED the hl patch to play online, but it won't install. I don't have half
life, true, but the patch is needed.

RockCrowbar server - can't ping, can't join

2001-10-04 Thread emberts

Here is a weird one. While waiting for the latest OZ release, I'm playing
with other mods. I tried RockCrowbar this morning, but when I start the
server, I find that I can't ping the server, not even from my own network
using it's internal ip. I stopped the server, and restarted it as a VALVE
server, and it worked fine, then tried OZ 2.3.2, and likewise worked. Anyone
else play with RockCrowbar?

Is it client or server, sounds like client to me. If im wrong my apologies.
But in the initial post he stated in regards to his getting on the web and
playing.

RE: 1.1.0.8

2001-10-04 Thread Eric Smith

We're in the process of creating an update for the version of OpFor that
comes with BlueShift. We've contacted the guys at Gearbox and should have
something in the next few days.

Right now, the guys with the standalone version of OpFor (that comes with
BlueShift) won't be able to play on the Internet. We're working with Gearbox
to solve this as quickly as we can.

I have e-mailed Sierra, I have posted on numerous message boards, and I
still haven't gotten a reasonable answer to my problem. I am using OpFor on
the Blue-Shift cd, but when I try to install the latest patch, it says I'm
running the [space] version of half-life, and the patch is for the english
version. Seeing as I can read the menus, I believe I have the english
version, but it seems to think I have no language version. I think this has
something to do with the sierra.inf or language.inf files, but I'm not sure.
If someone (that has the patch working) could send a copy of those files for
me to compare? I have already tried re-re-re-installing opfor, but no luck.

Thanks,

Noah

RE: Hiding from the master server

2001-10-04 Thread Erik Johnson

The big problem with that is the strain it puts on the master servers.

At some point, we're going to redo the way the server browser works at a
lower level. This should help out with the problem.

I just want to indicate that it can take months for that traffic to
disapear

The reason: There is a refresh and an update.. many people do not know to
update more often than they do.. Someone who never updates the list will
refresh for months against you.. with millions of players.. that will be
often.. especially those that dont filter for the game they want to play...

*** VALVE: anyway to add to the wishlist next engine update for force an
update every 48 hours even if they hit the refresh button. I dont think
this is unreasonable and will help out the newer servers...

I believe it is the heartbeat from Won servers , but if my memory serves me
well that Gamespy was the main culprit in my case - It used to happen most
when I stopped the server for any length of time.
