2001-10-24 Thread Pete Claar

Hi Eric,

This is cool. Thanks for the update. I just installed it, along with the
new admin mod update, and will let you know how it goes. I have a pretty
vocal community on my server and I promise I will be passing along feedback
pretty rapidly.

Thanks!

Eric, does this "c" beta cover all previous betas too? I assume it does.
For example:

x108 --> x108c
x108a --> x108c
x108b --> x108c

Re: [hlds] WON Fixed Yet?

2001-10-24 Thread Manny_PacBell

I am having problems with my 4 phineas DM servers dropping clients, hanging
up, getting stuck, and CL_Flush Entity packet warnings, or they just time
out or get dropped...if not then the play is so slow and doggy they
don't stay.
I have run these servers for 2 years now and no problems till the new patch
was installed...I am glad to see I am not the only one. I have 2 CS
servers running and they seeem to have no problems.

Any ideas guys???

[hlds] Beta Half-Life Engine

2001-10-24 Thread Eric Smith

We're aware of the stability issues with the x.1.0.8 versions of the
servers, and we're working to solve the problems as quickly as we can. We
have a beta Half-Life engine that we'd like to begin testing.

Issues we have addressed with this version of the Half-Life engine:

- Fixed "bad address type" fatal server error (caused by clients with long
names).
- Added logging of fatal Sys_Error server shutdowns.

We've also included the latest versions of HLTV, the beta TFC server, and
the beta CStrike server. The files are available for you to download via
our FTP site:

  ftp: ftp.valvesoftware.com
login: hlserver
 pass: hlserver

Windows
===
filename: /Beta/Win32/hlds_4108c_beta.zip
  md5sum: f7172f5f766b7828c74eaa1698a7e68e
files that are replaced:
/4108c_changes.txt
/cstrike.dat(for CS Retail listen servers)
/hl.dat (for HL listen servers)
/hltv.cfg
/hltv.exe
/HLTV-Readme.txt
/sw.dll
/tfc/dlls/tfc.dll
/cstrike/dlls/mp.dll

Linux
=
filename: /Beta/Linux/hlds_l_3108c_beta.tar.gz
  md5sum: 647de4be55e14208633c4b8dc437ccc3
files that are replaced:
hlds_l/3108c_changes.txt
hlds_l/engine_i386.so
hlds_l/hltv
hlds_l/hltv.cfg
hlds_l/HLTV-Readme.txt
hlds_l/cstrike/dlls/cs_i386.so
hlds_l/tfc/dlls/tfc_i386.so

All you need to do is download the appropriate file(s) and replace your old
one(s). It's always a good idea to back-up your old versions first.
Clients should not have any problems connecting to your server.

If you have any questions, please let me know
(mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]).

Thanks.

Re: [hlds] CL_Flush Entity Packet

2001-10-24 Thread Paul McMurphy

I have also had problems with dial-up members complaining that they get
choked off. I have my sv_minrate @ 3000 and sv_maxrate @ 6000. What do
most people run for sv_minrate and sv_maxrate? (I understand this depends
on how fat your pipe is also) On some servers have seen both of these values
set to zero (under server information online). Does that make since to
anyone? Are there other parameters that I should be looking at?

Thanks,

Re: [hlds] Experience about server crashing

2001-10-24 Thread Oliver C. Agustin(PhilWeb)

But i don't experience server crashing during
the earlier release of hlds. beside, static routing
is handled by win2k automatically.(correct me pls
if i am mistaken coz i don't usually add static routing to my
win2k server manually.)  One other thing
"route print" displayed what John asked me to "route add."  Well
anyway
i will dig deep into the problem.  Thanks
John. Let ya know if there's some progress.

I think we can't help but patiently wait till valve
sorted out the problem we're having.

  This
is due to the fact that both NT4 and Win2k drop their internal routes when
they dial out on a dial-up-networking connection. The easiest way around this
would be to put a static route table entry in for your internal
  network.

  Just
  do a route add -p xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx mask 255.xxx.xxx.xxx
  xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

  ^Your internal net^its subnet
mask ^the ip of your NIC to that lan on the server.

  This
  should fix your problem.

share you some experience about server cs 1.3
and hlds 1.0.0.8,
I'm running a local lan with at least 20
players connected to it. Server
specs was: p3 733/128mb rdram 9.1 scsi hdd,
intel pro/100+ nic.

i execute hlds.exe with -nomaster and +sv_lan 1
options, hlds
is stable, but once the server(running win2k
svr) connects to the internet
through dial-up connection, hlds would
unpredictably crash.  Sometimes
the players connected to it would
simultaneously freeze(at least 3 of them).

This might be related to the "long name" exploit currently being used. It
causes severe lag with all the players in the server and sometimes crashes
the server.

We'll be releasing a fix for this either later today or tomorrow. More
information will be sent to the mailing list when the release is ready.

I seem to lose a few clients every 10/15 minutes. The symptoms are they
are experiencing "lag" yet their ping is under 60ms. Then they either
recover or drop.
Firewall log shows that there was a lot of UDP traffic on port 0 coming
from the clients. The firewall interprets this as a teardrop DoS attempt
and filters those packets.

This was not the case with 4.1.0.7. Is this related to the new voice
comms ? We could sacrifice the voice feature if need be.

Would it be possible that someone could publish what TCP and UDP ports
HLDS 4.1.0.8 b2 needs to have open ?

In Valve's defense, though they are slow to respond sometimes, once
they do they're really on the ball. Perhaps, as a server admin who
doesn't regularly bash on Valve on public mailing lists, I get
faster responses from Erik/c and Yahn than some others? hehe. :)

Seriously, though, I'm more than willing to accept a habitual
silence from Valve as evidence that they're all slavishly pumping
out code for TF2. Valve has earned my rarely-granted trust, and when
they say that they're gaining a lot of valuable experience with HL
that they're actively coding into TF2, I believe them. This is one
admin who's gonna be more than happy to shell out some $$ for TF2
when it comes out (especially if there's a native Linux client for
it... mmm.

(No, Valve hasn't said there will be a native Linux client, but
can't I be allowed to indulge my little fantasies once in a while?)

RE: [hlds] Clients dropping and "lagging" 4.1.0.8 b2

2001-10-24 Thread Eric Smith

Actually, nm all. Sorry for these posts. I was receiving duplicates
probably because I subscribed with the wwgaming.com account and the
unitedadmins.com account hadn't been unsubscribed yet. =\

This
is due to the fact that both NT4 and Win2k drop their internal routes when they
dial out on a dial-up-networking connection. The easiest way around this would
be to put a static route table entry in for your internal
network.

Just
do a route add -p xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx mask 255.xxx.xxx.xxx
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

^Your internal net^its subnet
mask ^the ip of your NIC to that lan on the server.

This
should fix your problem.

share you some experience about server cs 1.3 and
  hlds 1.0.0.8,
I'm running a local lan with at least 20 players
  connected to it. Server
specs was: p3 733/128mb rdram 9.1 scsi hdd, intel
  pro/100+ nic.

  i execute hlds.exe with -nomaster and +sv_lan 1
  options, hlds
is stable, but once the server(running win2k svr)
  connects to the internet
  through dial-up connection, hlds would
  unpredictably crash.  Sometimes
the players connected to it would simultaneously
  freeze(at least 3 of them).

[hlds] UnitedAdmins.com Replaced

2001-10-24 Thread HoundDawg

UnitedAdmins.com (UA), the former membership based website for game server
admins, has now been officially replaced by a site that is part of the World
Wide Gaming Network (WWg). WWg is committed to providing useful information
for the gaming community. This new network will not only serve the server
admin community, but have websites dedicated to delivering information to
developers, mappers, and gamers in general.

One of the major complaints received by server admins about
UnitedAdmins.com, was the membership requirement. We have completely done
away with that model which has opened up the new site to all admins without
requiring membership. Those of you that were UA members, may notice that
the navigation has improved substantially along with improved information
delivery.

The site is still young and we are working on publishing a lot more content
in the coming weeks. Here is the URL (which you may want to bookmark):
