[hlds] Steam 'at work'

2004-07-26 Thread Adam
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
It appears the Steam network is down for some?

I am unable to login and get error: 'Unable to Connect to the Steam Network'.
Also servers I host in the Pacific Northwest say Outdated protocol and just like 20
minutes ago they were fine.

Even our paid remote server hosts in the Midwest are down.

Will continue to read steampowered.com for update.

That worked---thanks. How about the opposite: Is it possible to have
the
server run one map for the specified time and then EXIT (i.e. not run
another game)?

What we're trying to do is have a game server running with a web page
front
end where we can click the game/map we want from a browser, have it run
once, then exit until we launch the next map (that way we can pick each
game/map individually instead of relying on the map rotation schedule).
I'm
trying to avoid having anyone have to physically log on the server to do
stuff like that. Maybe there's an easier way? Thanks.

Paul.

I've not tried this, but putting "quit" in the file pointed to by
"mapchangecfgfile" should work. You may need two config files, the first
to run when the map loads, which sets mapchangecfgfile to the second
file, which is then executed after the map ends.

RE: [hlds] Denial of service?

2004-07-26 Thread Napier, Kevin
I will not, though I could throw a whole bunch of reasons out like I did
last sept\oct but that was not the point. My post was simply that your
comment that nobody cares about won but cheaters is horse sh1t. There are
plenty of non cheaters that have resisted steam for an great number of
different issues. I'm not hear to argue about it because it is what it is,
but to say only cheaters are annoyed is totally inaccurate and sounds more
like it belongs on the raging steam forums...lol but I know you to be much
better then that!

Then tell me why people like Won authentication as opposed to Steam
authentication?
The Auth part is really invisible to the end user.

My point was that it's the Mod code updates that are causing all the
problems.

CS in particular this last round. This is separate from steam.

2004-07-26 Thread K. Mike Bradley
Nobody really cares about WON (except the hackers who broke it a long time
ago to get free game codes).
They care about playing the game.

Its not that Steam is unreliable or that WON is this great thing nobody
wants to see go away.
The Steam Client has been reliable for several months now.

The problem is that pushed updates allow the vendor (Valve) to push untested
updates.
And that is what they have been doing.

Weather its Steam or WON is really irrelevant. Steam is just a game front
end and content delivery client.

Its these untested updates, for the various mods that are launched by Steam,
that cause the problems.

Again I say to Valve,

Add a Beta checkbox to the Steam client so Servers and Clients can volunteer
to be a Beta.

Test the updates for a week on only Beta machines, then roll them out to
everyone else.

QED !!!

Problem solved.
