Re: [SPAM] Re: [SPAM] RE: [hlds] Re: banner in downloadurl

2005-05-09 Thread Steve Tilson
Your grasp of the obvious lacks significant amounts of substance.
Per Alfred, there will not be a banner for the autodownload in CSS.
So you need to get over it and change your approach to making better use
of the motd.
But by all means keep responding as though you are the VALVe product
manager.

Re: [SPAM] Re: [SPAM] RE: [hlds] Re: banner in downloadurl

2005-05-09 Thread Clayton Macleod
haha, get over yourself. Not to mention take your own advice. (Even
though your statement made absolutely no sense. How exactly was my
pointing out that the MOTD is not the download banner portraying
myself as a valve product manager? heh.)

That aside, telling someone to use the MOTD when they're talking about
a banner that displays during the time that the client is loading
and/or downloading data makes about as much sense as telling someone
to chew their food carefully and thoroughly when they are asking which
wine might go well with the food they are going to prepare. One's kind
of related to the other, but they're not nearly the same thing. People
obviously want a banner during this period of time, just like they've
had for a long time in Valve's other product. And they're voicing that
desire. Your response was largely useless. It does nothing to address
the concern at hand. You obviously think your advice was golden, and
you're entitled to that opinion. It still had nothing to do with this
issue, and I fail to see why you had to get all pissy just because
someone pointed that fact out to you, heh.

Besides, you know as well as I do, and every other server admin here,
that nobody reads the motd. As soon as it appears, people hit enter
and get rid of it as soon as possible without even taking as much as a
glance at it. The banner during the loading stage, however, basically
has a captive audience and as someone mentioned serves at least one
very good purpose in their eyes. And I'm sure that same, or a very
similar, opinion is shared by many admins.

Visit E:\websites\noclans\downloads.htm and you can download the
motd_random_wav.zip and any other goodies you want.
Or download it directly from:
http://www.noclans.com/downloads/motd_random_wav.zip
Be sure to read the readme.txt as there are some changes you will want
to make.
Note this is an ASP solution (posted only to hlds list) but the code can
easily be modified to work on Linux via PHP, etc.
If anyone does modify the code for Linux then I would like a copy to
include in the archive for others to use.

I did put in the max value of 99 for some humor...
Try sitting on any motd screen for 99 seconds sometime
;-)
But I do think a 5 to 10 second delay is OK.
Provided there is something worth looking at on the screen.
Like a message from a server supporting sponsor.
The big hosts on the big IP pipes cost money and we would all like to
lessen our expenses via pass-through to anyone with lots of cash to spare.
OK?
I am all in favor of less defects because less defects equals more playtime.

you could do what i have seen UK2 do in the past is to have extra
graphics displayed around the maps. dont know how they did this but they
UK2 logo would be visible as well as some ads for their bb services etc...
this could be used to get ur ads onto the server and have rules posted
at spawn sites!

Your opinion is your own of course but I think the large majority
of server admins will disagree with you. If players cant be arsed to
see a message on connect for a few seconds then tbh they will go
play else where. If they like the server the quality etc they will
read / wait for the message. Servers cost money in hardware
and in bandwidth its a small price to pay to see a banner at the
beginning.

Just caught a guy changing his name on a CS 1.6 server changing his name
once every 0.5 seconds and was able to use 14 different names in the space
of under 10 seconds and thats the ones HLSW was able to log him using, that
how fast he was changing them.
So much for that fix lasting.
May I ask why it is possible for a client to override server side
limitations, unless of course the name change limitation is not enforced by
the server, but is in fact enforced by the client?
 Cheers

ARGH! my apologies
www.noclans.com/downloads.htm!!!
Thank you for helping my smartass to see the light!

I believe he was refering to the following part of you re-mail:
Visit E:\websites\noclans\downloads.htm and you can download the
motd_random_wav.zip
So I guess you host a website on your E drive? He wasn't trying to start
anything, just pointing out a minor hiccup in your end.

ok smartie. this i love. join any =]NOCLANS[= server and when the motd
appears know that it was not a link to a file but that the motd.txt
contained nothing but the following url: http://www.noclans.com/motd.asp
Note that the link is a fully qualified URL to a page on a web server.
You can open the link in internet explorer if you want to hear the
example work.
so try learning prior to inserting foot into mouth next time. grin
