One other thing I might point out... In defense of those who are upset
about this (myself excluded)

The first time, understandable. The second announcement was, and I
quote...

The update should be released in about *an hour*. You'll know as soon as
we do it because your server will report that it's out-of-date.

Now we can argue this til we're all blue in the face (or until the
update is released heh) but the fact is, you just don't usually make an
announcement 1 hour before release, then find bugs. If you are running
a smooth shop, that doesn't happen often. I think you all know that!
Once you hit the hour line, the product should be DONE... Not kinda
done, not we're still testing done, I mean really DONE, ready to ship.

Now in defense of Valve, or maybe more specifically Eric, I seriously
doubt he is doing this to play with you all. The bug is very real I'm
sure, and I for one am happy it's being fixed now, and not later with
yet another patch. Server admins hate patches and for good reason.

In other words, if Eric could release it, it's safe to assume he would
at this point. I, like a few others, just hope this doesn't change the
release date for either the DOD:S server or client. Good luck Valve :)

Re: [hlds] SV_DownloadURL

2005-09-23 Thread Dustin

Sorry I was not trying cause a problem.

Yes using a seprate web server is a great idea, my posts were targeting the
guys that were having problems getting all the right files to there web
share, my solution (and yes when large groups of players do not have the map
there is a lag, but in my case it's the limit of transfer my server
solutions has,I am only allowed so much of the OC3 pipe per second) makes it
simple to install new maps, I don't have to worry about installing the map
in more then one place. Every thing installed on the server is all ready
made available to the web server due to the nature of the setup.

then
running the web service on the same connection is a bad idea and will not
realy give you any gain in gamers experince. So in that case having a Web

come
on, if your running a good game server one of the things you should be

You shouldn't run your sv_downloadurl mirror on the same physical
location as your Game servers. Think about it. Do you really want your
Game Servers precious resources being squandered on downloading map
files to 18 players on a full 24 slot server? The other six players are
going to experience some erratic play while your server pushes out files
to 18 people at the same time and tries to run your game servers. Not
to mention anyone playing on any other game servers you happen to be
running at the same time will suffer as well. If you do not have
separate web space there are places to get sv_downloadurl resources for
a very reasonable price.I use URLDownload.com and I have been very happy
with them. If you are going to offer High Speed Downloads to your
players the cost is not that hard to deal with.

Ok, after reading my post I feel that I should re-phrase slightly.

It was* recommended* to me (and I agree) that you shouldn't run them
both on the same box. The numbers I gave were similar to an example
given to me to explain why and I have certainly seen that situation come
up. I was having a serious problem with momentary lag on map changes
when a large group of players had to download the maps. File transfer
uses considerable resources. If enough players are downloading a large
map at the same time it will slow things down. I had a CS server that
was almost entirely Custom maps with a couple of new ones added every
week or so. I also had a CZ server with many Custom maps. We had a
devoted following of players that played there, one because of the maps
and two because of the High Speed Downloads that kept them from having
to go get them. Having sv_downloadurl services on the same box shortened
the time that the server was effected but it was still there. Moving the
files off site to another location solved the problem entirely.

My account at urldownload.com cost around $12.95 a month I believe and
can host maps for all of my servers. I also have a friends development
site hosted there with plenty of room to spare. I feel that it is well
worth the money. Just my 2-cents guys. Sorry if it came across wrong. If
you feel that you can run it on the same box then go for it. I found
that with my

so that means the usage should be decreased.. or atleast be used better, and

Just restarted my servers after the new updated, and I'm getting a
  popup:

  Runtime Error!
  Program: C:\srcds\srcds.exe
  R6025
  - pure virtual function call

Removing the plugin removes the error. Looks like we're in for a fun day
  of updating stuff. :/

Also I had to remove mattie Event scrips. but I am not
sure which version I had of that.

Perhaps one of the old versions of Manni will work??/

4. Restarted

It seems to be running properly now. I've got one server as a regular

Re: [hlds] Server Release

This patch has broken all custom mods from launching. When I and other
members of my clan try to launch HL2-CTF or HL2 Promod, you get a player
Error which says: modname\gameinfo.txt is missing.

The file is not missing, however...and this happens with any custom Third
Party Game under that section.

Also, my servers seem to be using a lot more bandwidth now, especially at round

Re: [hlds] Engine update

2005-09-23 Thread David Harrison

Trying to pass -steamport port to our servers and they crash
immediately on startup. This was working before but now throws a weird
error.

I don't know what it does or if its necessary (was added by someone else
to our servers) but just thought I'd point it out if anyone else is
using it.

[hlds] *n00b alert* Sorry, I am having what I have been told is a port issue

2005-09-23 Thread David Pietersen
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
Hi all,
Sorry to bother you with this, but I have an issue I have been told is most
likely related to ports.
I have Source Dedicated Server set up, and up to 16 of us have been playing
quite nicely with really low pings, but when you are trying to find my
server the list it reports my ping in the thousands. I have a 12256/1024
connection, and the server is all that is on it. Heck, I dl the Vista beta
in the time it took me to get a snack, so I don't see why there is a
problem.
The ports I have opened are below, and I would like to know if they are
correct so I can open/close as necessary. They are all set up for both
inbound and outbound, as I could not find any info on what they were meant
to be.
 *1200*
*27000 - 27015*
*27020*
*27030 - 27039*
Please don't ask me where I got this list from, I spent a solid week
reading multiple forums and Googling until my fingers bled just trying to
work out how to set the thing up. Valve should go into advertising ;-)
 Thanks in advance!

[hlds] RE: Engine update

2005-09-23 Thread frankc
I second that. Is there some reason that you would release a patch with so many
known issues with mods with out any warning? The reasonable thing would have
been to give the community a heads up about what you were breaking so these
issues could be addressed BEFORE the update.

Re: [hlds] Erik: Patch broke all Third Party Mods....gameinfo.txt is missing error

2005-09-23 Thread Dustin

That's just not possible, so lets say you make a cup holder, and give specs
on what type of cups it can support, someone makes a cup that does not
follow your spec, does that mean your required to chamge your cup holder to
match someone who didn't take the time to build the right cup for the
holder?

Valve is not and should not be expected to make sure there code updates do
not break the badly designed cup (thrid party MOD). Stop being negitivate
towards Valve and lean on the thrid party MOD makers to follow the API so
that when an update is made there MOD will be complient.

Just wanted to change the subject line to catch Erik's attention.

This patch has broken all custom mods from launching. When anyone
tries to launch HL2-CTF, HL2 Promod, or any other Third Party Mod,
you get a player popup Error which says:

 modname\gameinfo.txt is missing.

This file is not missing, however...

Re: [hlds] Erik: Patch broke all Third Party Mods....gameinfo.txt is missing error [OT]

2005-09-23 Thread David Harrison

I'm in Australia, so I generally cop all these updates on a Saturday.
I'm pretty familiar with how often these issues crop up; I remember them
vividly because I'm usually hungover and wishing I wasn't working.

I'd rather keep Valve bashing to a minimum so we can resolve the issues
immediately by only offering useful feedback to the list, so I can go
back to trying to enjoy my 'day off'. After the issues are resolved then
everyone can bash them to their heart's content!

This'll be my last post on the issue; I already feel like an ass for not
practising what I preach :)

Issues are simply Valve should test, especially with mods that most
servers use.
We've seen this time and time again in truth. Ask Valve about their
test setup and you will be truly amazed at how lacking if they are
honest (I know their test setup, just want to see if they are honest).

Firstly you are making the mistake I'm even referencing mods (which fair
enough have been a major factor in this fubar update, but thats not actually
what I'm aiming at, which you will see if they answer with their test
setup). You'll actually be totally fascinated if they are honest, trust me.

I can only suggest their is something wrong with your client, and if this
was a client list then maybe your issue would get more attention. After the
client side update I have been able to connect to all Valve MOD games. Have
you gone to the forum and done a search, I am sure there are other players

correct the problem and I bet one might work for your issue.

Firstly you are making the mistake I'm even referencing mods (which fair
enough have been a major factor in this fubar update, but thats not
actually
what I'm aiming at, which you will see if they answer with their test
setup). You'll actually be totally fascinated if they are honest, trust
me.

I can only suggest their is something wrong with your client, and if this

client side update I have been able to connect to all Valve MOD games. Have
you gone to the forum and done a search, I am sure there are other players

Re: [hlds] RE: Mandatory Source engine update later today...

2005-09-23 Thread James McKenna

That's nice, however, of all the professional game developers, Valve is
the only one constantly updating it's games. Shit happens, get over it. They
don't owe you anything, though I know you think they do. See, when they
announce an update coming soon, it's a curtesy. They could simply release it
and leave you with your pants aroud your ankles, but they don't... they
alert us all with these messages. Then, they alert us that they won't be
able to release it because there's a last minute problem. Sounds
professional to me. Taking the time to make sure the fans are in the know.
Wow. More than can be said for just about every game company out there.

In any event, is there a way I can get the command parameter for dod:s? I
just want to set the .bat file that runs daily to include that so when it's
released, I can get it automatically. Thannks!

I dont understand this way of resoning.

Let take this metaphor.

If you provide a road from A to B. But if most people can use a shortcut,
to save them time, they will use it. After a while you will have a path
going through that shortcut. Why not simply create a road on that path?

If all the plugindevelopers want to use the system a certain way. And
doing it through a nifty hack. Why not just realize that, and include
those into the SDK?

The discussion about the menusystem a great couple of month ago, when you
shut down the ability to use the widely used ingame menu is a good example
of an option that should be included into the SDK, or give a way to
accomplish exactly the same thing.

I can only se benefits for both valve and the community to include such
options.
