There's a lot of reasons for this. For instance, I work at a very large
Colo plant. We have like 100k hosts here. Obviously some of the
subdivision is physical, some is level 2 routing, and some is level 3
routing. We also use firewalls to keep some things from other things
(for instance a company might have their servers with 1 port to the
internet and 1 port to their own local network.) This stuff really
really starts to get complicated. It's best not to worry about it
unless you are planning on becoming a Network Engineer or Network Architect.

There's actually a possibility of several things here. One is
 that a

Thanks for the help guys.

Whisper, what scripts in particular do you use, as I would like to mess
around with these on our server to get a feel for how they work?

Moreover, it has been noted that it can have negative impacts on

The only reason I set it at 25 was to try stop rate hackers or anyone
that was on a crap connection that could not supply a decent upload. You

RE: [hlds] SRCDS Windows Server Best Practices

2006-03-27 Thread Adam Sando
Thanks for all the feedback guys, really appreciate it.

Just to give you some background info on the server I am using. The setup is as
follows:
- CPU: 2.4GHz P4
- RAM: 512MB
- HDD: Enough
- Bandwidth Limit: 100mbit (AU based data-centre)
- SRCDS Roles: Private/Personal (Clan and public only - no reselling)
- Other Roles: IIS, MySQL
- SRCDSFPSBoost: Yes (srcds runs at 512 fps)
- Player Count: < or = 16
- Tickrate: 66
- sv_maxrate: 2
- sv_minrate: 3000
- sv_maxupdaterate: 100
- sv_minupdaterate: 25
- fps_max: 600

Plugins installed:
- Mani-Admin Beta 1.2L
- Metamod v1.2.1
  + VIP Mod
- Matties Eventscripts v0.9.5.1
  + EternalBank
  + XE_Bet
- StatseMeMinimum s30
- zBlock Min v1.0ab

Given the above information, I think I have the server running quite well at 66
tick with up to 16 players. I admit that 512MB memory would probably help here,
however when we have wars on our server (5v5) which was the core role for this
machine, it runs flawlessly. Having the public logon to it was just an
afterthought, however I still want to keep the public happy :)

Do the settings listed above seem fair and reasonable based on my setup
information?

Regards,
Adam

I don't think that Adam was going to resell his server-services... Just to host
some servers for him and his friends... ;o)

And just to clarify, the sv_maxrate determines the maximum amount of bandwidth
to use on one single client.
So it is not about hardware but bandwidth... If set too high, and at full load,
the bandwidth would be saturated and causing lag, when the server would try to
send the data using specified max-rate to all clients at same time.

Sgt.Rock

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] In my humble opinion :) Yes
your hardware might not be abled to sustain an sv_maxrate above 1, in this
case I recommend not reselling SRCDS services, as you are duping your customers
(unless you give it explicit mentioning in your terms of agreement. Personally
I'd be incredably pissed if some GSP pulled that trick on me)

Re: [hlds] HL2DM Server now behind WG Firebox 700 was playablebut not listed by STEAM

2006-03-27 Thread Deacon - Digital Gaming eXtreme

Cyko,
Are you still having a problem w/ this? I can see your server via the steam
client, HLSW and via our own home-grown monitoring scripts.

Are you trying to view your server from an internal or protected interface
on the watchguard?

sv_region 255 doesn't always work, but I believe you've previously had
it at 0 right? Also might wanna specify sv_lan 0.

It seriously sounds like an issue with the configuration of the Firebox.
Where you getting problems with your Linksys? (We are currently hosting
around 22000 servers using Linksys WRT54Gs with our own custom OpenWRT
distro for MAC filtering)

I know this really isnt the place for it but is valve ever going to fix
teh GIGANTIC exploit in argentan? Im sick of all the people who are
exploiting it. I thought it would have been fixed by now. If valve
doesnt know about it I have a ton of Screenies that show it. Very easy
to do.

Hi everyone. Sorry for no reply. My net was down for a bit. And yes... My IP

Basically, the outside world needs unrestricted access to your servers IP
address and port. Ordinarily that would be through a Firewall or at least a
router performing NAT (network address translation). You say you have no
router and your firewall is disabled... which means your puter is sitting
right on the Internet (not likely). What is your computers IP address? If
it is anything like 10.10.x.x or 192.168.x.x these are not actual Internet
IP addresses and no one outside your own LAN will be able to connect unless
you have a router or a proxy or some device which performs NAT for you.
Start here... what is your servers IP address? Caution... if your server
actually is sitting right on the Internet... I wouldn't go posting it's
address here and I'd get it off the Internet ASAP.

Firewall is disabled. And no router. The server.cfg lists no sv_lan. I have
a
modem box though, but I don't know what I would change in it.

I'm curious... why the outgoing filter from any to a list of IP addresses?
Why wouldn't you allow outbound from any to any? I can see restricting
inbound... but why outbound?

The Linksys was running perfectly! with a nat route public to private and I
have set up the firebox according to this article.

You will need to add the following 2 custom services to your "Outbound"
firewall settings.

Service Name: SteamLogonAuthAndUpdateServers (if firewall allows for names)
(also: IP list updated to include Steam changes & Rag Doll Kung Foo update

RE: [hlds] HL2DM Server now behind WG Firebox 700 was playable bu t not listed by STEAM

2006-03-27 Thread Edward Luna
The Watchguard Firebox's have a nasty habit of disallowing packets for more
reasons than Carter has little liver pills. The Watchguard itself could be
blocking the packets and/or ports. Check the logs in the WG... if logging
isn't turned on then turn it on and then check the logs. WG keeps excellent
logs. If you still can't figure it... and you have WG support, create an
incident with WG support. They are usually pretty good.
One more thing... WG is very big on Proxies... make sure your not getting
proxied somehow in the Firebox. Also, there is a configuration in WG to
auto block packets from IP addresses (I think IP's) if WG thinks the IP is
spoofed. I'm sorry but I don't remember where the parm is in WG but I do
know you should turn it off.

This Server was full fuctional on Friday, I replaced a linksys router with
the firebox on Saturday and configured the ports to foward the game like it
was for the linksys router.

Here is full config file.
// Use this file to configure your DEDICATED server.
// This config file is executed everytime the server changes levels.

// Any modifications made to this file will not take affect before the
server has been restarted.

hostname "CYKO's™ Low-Gravity Sniper - Original Flavor!"
// Passwords

//sv_password xx
rcon_password x

// Server Settings

Log 1

sv_maxspeed 250
sv_cheats 0
sv_alltalk 0
sv_minrate 50
sv_maxrate 3
sv_gravity 85
sv_allowupload 1
sv_allowdownload 1
sv_region 255

sv_rcon_minfailures 2
sv_rcon_maxfailures 3
sv_rcon_banpenalty 60
sv_rcon_minfailuretime 30

mp_fraglimit 25

mp_flashlight 1
mp_footsteps 1
mp_forcerespawn 0

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] HELP, Perviously running
server HL2DM, is still running and was playable behind a WG Firebox 700, You
can play the server as long as it is in your favorites, but if you list the
internet games, the server is not listed. So no one new can see the game
running, unless it on their favorits.

I have added a NAT entry (Public IP) to Internal server (IP) on the firebox,
that helps play the game, but I can not get the server listed by name, but
if you add the IP into favorites, that name comes up. But that now has
stopped working, No i can not even get on the server.!

What ports besides 27015 do I need to openup on the firewall?

Re: [hlds] New VAC Problems

2006-03-27 Thread Robert Whelan
Old news posted below, all my servers are back with VAC enabled so I'd
assume its been resoled. Alfred posted about it earlier...

"Valve is having connectivity issues to there VAC servers, they are
working on it. Servers should report "secure mode enabled, disconnected
from Steam3" when the "status" command is run if they will become
secure once the VAC servers come back online."

[hlds] New VAC Problems

2006-03-27 Thread leo bounds
I have some VAC problems today that I haven't had
before with updated HL1 based servers.

The message I see when I start servers is:

Connection to Steam Servers Successful (SU)
 VAC Secure mode not available

status shows:
insecure (secure mod enabled, disconnected from
Steam3)

If I have had problems in the past I have been able to
fix them either by an -sport switch or making sure my
files are updated. Neither of those are working for me
today and I have this issue on several server
machines.
The Steam VAC error message also seems different.

Has anyone else had this problem lately and know a
solution ?
 These are windows servers.

Thank you for any helpful info or suggestions,
LB

The Linksys was running perfectly! with a nat route public to private and I
have set up the firebox according to this article.

You will need to add the following 2 custom services to your "Outbound"

Service Name: SteamLogonAuthAndUpdateServers (if firewall allows for names)
(also: IP list updated to include Steam changes & Rag Doll Kung Foo update

I've seen several console messages lately on my OP4 server about loosing
communicatin with Steam servers. I wonder if Steam is having a hard time of

2006-03-27 Thread Stuart Stegall
sv_region 255 doesn't always work, but I believe you've previously had
it at 0 right? Also might wanna specify sv_lan 0.

It seriously sounds like an issue with the configuration of the Firebox.
Where you getting problems with your Linksys? (We are currently hosting
around 22000 servers using Linksys WRT54Gs with our own custom OpenWRT
distro for MAC filtering)

[hlds] RE: [hlds_linux] server is insecure

2006-03-27 Thread Alfred Reynolds
We are having connectivity issues to our VAC servers, we are working on
it. Server servers should report "secure mode enabled, disconnected from
Steam3" when the "status" command is run if they will become secure once
the VAC servers come back online.

Re: [hlds] HL2DM Server now behind WG Firebox 700 was playable but not listed by STEAM

2006-03-27 Thread Stuart Stegall
There's actually a possibility of several things here. One is that a
port is blocked upstream of your router. Second is that your ip is
blocked by Valve.

Sometimes upstream prodivers block ports who knows what reason, though
generally it's because they are either being DoS'd or there's an exploit
that's using that port and they are blocking it for a couple of weeks.
Unless you have some kind of dedicated port, you generally don't get
notified of these port blockings.

The second problem could be checked by seeing if your shows up on
GameSpy. We had an IP range we purchased that was being blocked by
Valve (actually turned out it was being blocked by a LOT of people, damn
hackers) and while we couldn't find it through the Steam server
listings, they did show up @ GameSpy.

Also, I assume you've double checked that your Firebox is forwarding the
ports to this server.

Post your full config file as well. (minus your rconpassword please)

I've seen several console messages lately on my OP4 server about loosing
communicatin with Steam servers. I wonder if Steam is having a hard time of
things?

Hi

My 2 hl2mp servers which were secure and on VAC this morning have now
lost VAC connection. A restart doesn't cure this and I get something new
in the console "Connection to Steam servers successful (SU)" but still no
VAC, and it says in the console when I type status "version : 1.0.0.7/7
2672 insecure (secure mode enabled, disconnected from Steam3)"

Anyone else having thos problem or know whats going on?

My servers are co-located in London, Docklands, UK

On checking the server listings, I see that a few of the normally secure
servers are now insecure, yet another that is at the same location as mine
is still secure. Weird!

Mick

[hlds] dod_argentan exploit fix ever?

2006-03-27 Thread Hell Phoenix

I know this really isnt the place for it but is valve ever going to fix
teh GIGANTIC exploit in argentan? Im sick of all the people who are
exploiting it. I thought it would have been fixed by now. If valve
doesnt know about it I have a ton of Screenies that show it. Very easy
to do.

Good Luck trying to get anywhere with UTP, you are going to need it.

I think you will find the author of article meant UDP, which may allow you

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

With the filters set to none for the region, The server is still not listed
and if you add the IP manually, it still does not show up!

Hi,

sv_region should be one of the following, depending on where your server is
located:

0 US East coast
1 US West coast
2 South America
3 Europe
4 Asia
5 Australia
6 Middle East
7 Africa
255 world
