Re: [hlds] Server stats report interesting note (HT related) server total bandwidth usage

2006-09-25 Thread Kevin Ottalini

All three servers are running pretty much wide open.

HLDM:
sv_maxrate
sv_maxupdaterate 30

HLDM:S:
sv_maxrate 2
sv_maxupdaterate 60 (recently lowered to 40 though)

HL2DM:
sv_maxrate 2
sv_maxupdaterate 60 (might lower this to 40)

Note: Most HL2 clients have the default cl_updaterate 20 and rate 2 set.

The total number of players (62) times the total number of max updates per
second (150) give a possible 9,300 possible updates per second.

On a wide-open client I see high-end incoming data at (all bytes / sec):

hl2dm:
20k/s incoming on the client at 2 60/s settings (has physics
data) (server typically reports 154k/15 players outgoing - 10k/player)

hldm:s:
12k/s incoming on the client at 2 60/s settings (has minimal
physics data) (server typically reports 60k/7 players - 10k/player)

hldm:
5k/s typically on the client at 30/s settings

so to calculate ~maximums from the client side (all bytes/s):
hl2dm: 20k/s per client * 16 clients = 320K/s outgoing max bandwidth from
the server
hldm:s: 12k/s per client * 32 clients = 384K/s outgoing max bandwidth from
the server
hldm: 5k/s per client * 14 clients = 70K/s outgoing max bandwidth from
the server
--
total: 774KB/s ~= 7.74Mbits/second estimated maximum network demand

Looking at the network performance on taskmanager, I'm currently seeing
peaks of 2.5% of the 100Mbit/sec connection or 2.5Mbit/s outgoing, but all
three servers are usualy not at 100% (hldm:s is typicaly not going over 20
players right now).

A crosscheck against the monthly totals that are being reported:
say I'm getting a daily average of 2% of the 100Mbit/s network, so 2mbit/s
sec

2mbit/s * 3600s/h*24h/d * 30 days = 5184Gbits/month / 10bit/byte =
518.4GBytes/month which is almost exactly what I'm seeing reported as usage
right now.

It would appear that the individual client reporting is tracking reasonably
well with the server side totals, with the raw network measurements and with
the actual recorded usage. Actual server usage measurements are probably
read directly from the local network switch (they only seem to care about
outgoing usage).

What I don't really see are the instantaneous peaks (things are all averaged
somewhat in these measurements).

This is all a tremendous load for a single 3.0GHz CPU, I can easily see a
need for a real dual processor system here.

The good news for memory usage though is that all three servers are only
using about 580MB out of the the 2GB on the server box.

What were the servers rate settings?

Since I've never seen a factual report of actual server bandwidth usage,
I thought this might be interesting to everyone.

I have three servers running on an Intel platform under Win Server2003,
Hyperthreading is enabled.

When I ran stats on the servers when they were very busy, I saw two
servers reporting 75% CPU each and one server reporting 30% CPU - that
adds
up to a total of 180% CPU utilization. The reported usage matches what
was being shown graphically in the server GUIs.

Task Manager was reporting about 90% utilization during that time, so it
makes sense that the system is acting as if there were two processors
available.

I did some testing earlier and there was very little performance
difference with HT enabled or disabled, although the server in general
seemed slightly more responsive with HT enabled.

Bandwidth usage - The three servers have been running a month now and
have been very busy.

There is a 32-player server, a 16 player server and a 14 player server so
max 62 players, but the max has been about 50 players on at the same
time.
(I think the 32 player server is overloaded, probably needs to be limited
to no more then 20 players).

The platform has been extremely stable with no crashes, the only time
I've had to reboot was to install OS updates. I run no addons on the two
Source servers and I only run metamod and stripper2 on the HLDS server.

The game server and corresponding web server utilization are:

Server box (3 game servers):
Bandwidth used: 388 GB of allowed 500GB/Month in 22 days, 30 day
total/month = 17.64GB/day = 529GB/month (I need to keep an eye on this
hehe)

webhosting (fast http):
Bandwidth: 21.577.04 GB of allowed 2000.0 GB/month in 22 Days so about
1GB/day (includes the server web page).

Typical network overhead is 10 bits of actual bandwidth per character (8-bit

If your looking for DOD maps I have a bunch of them on my site in my
downloads section.
I think theres 120 or so custom maps and I also have made res files for the
HTTP fast asset downloads.

But if you want to really get your server popular, try editing the maps
weapon entities and adding weapons to both teams spawns.

I added 20 extra weapons from all teams and extra nades and ammo to
DOD_avalanche and my 32 slot server is packed from 4pm until 10 PM everyday.

google sucks @$$ if you want to find a quick, concise answer and not spend 3
hours clicking links to finds something pertinent.

For instance I've been trying to grab up all the dod (regular) maps I can.
Many of the links are outdated, replaced and even shut down yet google still
proudly displays them as part of the list of 294847505404958 pages that hit.

Heck the official dod site doesn't even have anything about dod anymore...it
is all source.

Don't you ever get aggravated when you need to call a support line for some
service, utility, bank, etc. (I leave out computer tech support because
obviously you know everything there is to know about computers :), and get
aggravated at being on hold and punching numbers, entering your phone
number, birthdate, etc. and then when/if you finally get a real live person
you have to tell them all that $hi|T again

Sometimes people just want to talk to another person!!

So have a heart

May I suggest in future when people ask n00bie questions on this list, that
our initial response should be to send them to the STEAM Forums, as most of
this stuff has been done to death there, and all this type of crap has
stickies, rather than going through the same old routine of, n00bie asks
question badly, n00bie gets half the advice they really need, n00bie gets
frustrated with this list, list smashes n00bie for not being able to
read/write/use google, list laments high probability of human species not
surviving if n00bie is representative of the majority, ok?

If you want zooks to be spawned just set mp_spawnbazookas to 1, 0 is
default and they will not spawn. This command go's into your server.cfg

total noob here...I understand the frustration you old pros must feel being
asked the same question for the 10,000 time...however...the internet is
more
full of junk than fred sanford's back yard. A clear link like someone
pointed out is just the ticket. If there isn't a good link maybe someone
who's really annoyed with the question should take 10 minutes and start
one.

I have a really noob question I'm sure has been asked a million times
before
about day of defeat (non-source). I thought after the addition of the
bazooka class the bazooka spawns no longer seemed to appear on the maps.
However, I notice that sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. When I
run my comp as a lan listen server the first time the ground spawn bazookas
appeared on map zalec and subsequently they do not. Is there a simple way
to correct this so they always spawn?

As a real lover of the world war two mod I've got to say that in my opinion
the bazooka class ruined (well didn't ruin but hurt) the gameit's
not team fortress with a rocket man for crying out loudzookas are for
destroying tanks and there aren't any driveable vehicles in dodfun for
objectives...annoying and unrealistic for a primary weapon...just my humble
opinion...rant off..any suggestions?

I'm out in the boonies sturmbot doesn't have a zooka class so no ground
spawn is a pain on an objective map. Shrikebot has a zooka class but why
do
two or three bots need to be running around with a zooka anyway???

Haven't played dod source yet...anyone working on a bot for it

Re: [hlds] How to create a server?

2006-09-25 Thread Ook

Did the OP ever get his server running? Mine works fine, dedicated SRCDS
HL1MP server. Source half-life 1 server, and there are almost always players
there. Mainly because there are few dedicated SRCDS hl1mp servers out there,
and the listen servers are very unstable.

As I recall, the steps posted by 1nsane were accurate as far as they went,
but there was a critical step missing. If anyone wants directions, I can
post how I got mine going.

Not all servers are created equally. And not all tutorials are accurate.
The
two how to's on Steam's forum for Half Life DM Source are faulty. I also
challenge you to go to Google and find a how to for this game. The one
created by 1nsane, which i did happen to find in Google, is wrong. Also
posting to a listserv is a form of research; please don't forget that. And
please remember this listserv was created for serveral reasons, and not to
accommodate the wishes of just one person or some select group of
programmers. If Valve wants this listserv to be specifically for
programmers then they can take better steps to make it more private and
exclusive.

In my opinion they should have put administrators and programmers on a
separate listserv, but I ain't gonna cry about it or start ranting. As
much
time as it took you people to reply in your email, you simply could have
hit
your DELETE button. Please do that next time instead of displaying your
personality problems to all of us.

And if I ever see any email here from someone wanting help to set up a
Steam
related game that I have run, I have a prewritten setup document that I am
simply going to cut and paste into my reply to them so I can help them.

Be forewarned. Thank you for listening.
