[hlds] Master Server List

Hello Everyone!

I seemed to have found something interesting and I'm wondering If other
people have noticed or if it's just me...

The problem began when users were complaining of no one joining their
servers, which I believed to be normal when a new server was created and
just put on the Valve master list. These things just take time. Right?

However, upon further investigation I began to notice users who had an
IP Address of 7X.X.X.X where a lot more popular fairly quick compared to
others with different IPs (Such as 204.X.X.X or 216.X.X.X, etc) I fired
up Steam and refreshed my list, sure enough the first 1000 or so started
with the ip of 7X.X.X.X!! Now, I know not all of them start with a 7 but
the majority of them do.

I asked some of my friends located in different parts of the country
(USA) and they reported the same! This can't be a coincidence.

This clearly puts anyone with a different IP to a disadvantage. Out of
(Millions?) of users that use Steam to browse for CS, CS Source, etc
games who actually goes and Sorts their game servers? I do however I can
assure you most people don't, they just want to browse and find a game
quick.

I am interested in what other people think about this, maybe with enough
commotion we can get valve to fix this...

Thanks!

PS. If this issue has already been discussed please forgive me, I
quickly skimmed through the mailing list and found nothing related.

FYI, this has been discussed in the past. It's because the steam browser goes
for IP's close to your IP first (numerically). From what I remember, they were
working on one that goes for geographically closest IP's first, instead of how
close the logical address is.

Apparently they're working on a system based on geographical location, this
has been discussed before, though...by myself and a few others, due to our
2xx IP's being so far down in the list :)

No idea on ETA though, we'll have to see if Alfred can give us a heads-up.

There's been someone on my server with no name and no SteamID for about an hour
at this point. I installed the beta this morning and there are 9 other players
in the server. Is this someone from valve testing or is there some sort of
glitch/bug? Just thought it was worth mentioning since it's beta.

A new Source Engine beta is available. Please run hldsupdatetool with
the command -beta src0613 to receive it. The specific changes
 include:

 - Fixed a client crash
 - Fixed sv_allow_wait_commands restricting the server using wait
 - Fixed a crash in soundlist command
 - Reallowed fps_max value of 0 (= unrestricted fps)
 - Fixed exploit that showed spectator radar when not a spectator
 - Fixed a crash playing back demo files recorded with the
 previously-released engine
 - Client forwards server commands it doesn't understand back to the
 server
 - Allow servers to execute chooseteam in Counter-Strike: Source
 - Allow servers to execute retry
 - sv_pure 1 now allows custom spray decals by default
 - Fixed Has Users Playing checkbox not using the new change where we
only display human players in the players tab, so you'd see servers with
0 players (they actually had only bots) listed

RE: [hlds] Master Server List

2007-06-14 Thread Jason O. Washburn
I don't think it is on purpose. It has to do with the ip addresses. If
the first digits of the dotted quads are two digits then it is a higher
level network address which usually translates to faster servers.

If you're running the standalone CS:S Dedicated Server just add
 bot_quota
N to your server.cfg file where N is the number of bots you'd like. If
 the
server is already running you can type bot_add and hit enter to add one
bot at a time. You can also type bot_add_t or bot_add_ct to specify
 which team they join.

 If you're running a CS 1.6 server, then I don't know. :(

   - Fixed Has Users Playing checkbox not using the new change where we
only display human players in the players tab, so you'd see servers
 with
0 players (they actually had only bots) listed

   Jason

HL2DM clients can see server chat messages only, they can't see other
player's chat text or their own.

I have a client that hasn't been updated yet (3137) and it can see
everything.

Here is the problem specifically:

] version
Protocol version 7
Exe version 1.0.0.12 (hl2dm)
Exe build: 12:32:29 Jun 13 2007 (3140)

L 06/14/2007 - 20:37:23: qUiCkSiLvEr2STEAM_0:0:0Unassigned say
hello
CUserMessages::DispatchUserMessage:  Bogus msg type 24 (max == 24)
Couldn't dispatch user message (24)
Netchannel: failed processing message svc_UserMessage.
Fragment transmission aborted at 1/1.

CSS, DODS and HLDMS clients don't appear to have a problem with this so
only HL2DM clients.

This doesn't appear to be related to linux or win32 servers.

Have you updated your client today after the latest release? It worked
with
yesterday's release. It might be a HL2DM thing ...
