Re: [hlds] Running behind a firewall, getting the external IP to register....

Important note:
You won't be able to see your own server in the server browser if you have
both the server and your client behind the same router, use a 3rd party
browser like gamemonitor to check and make sure you got all the launch
options set right.

When I was with Quest using a Cisco 678, or more recently their crappy
Actiontec router, I never saw my own server, though others did. With Centel
using a Westell 2100 in front of a WRT54G, I always see my own server in the
Steam list. I figured it was ISP dependant for some technical reason that I
remain ignorant of. Anyone know why this is? I vaguely recall discussing it
a few years ago, but dont' remember if anyone actually had a definitive
answer.

A few years ago I was going through low-end-cheap-crap-router-hell, and
tried to run behind a Belkin router. I never got the Steam master servers
list to pick me up. Never, even if I put my box in the dmz. dLink was
similarly evil. Switched to Netgear and it worked for a while, but my open
nap server was maxing out the routing table because I had a 1000 user
opennap server, and this would stop incoming connections until there was a
free spot in the table. I switched to Linksys, which has a bigger routing
table, and all of my problems went away. I'm still of the opinion that some
routers block something or otherwise block/corrupt packets that other
routers don't, and is a big part of the problem of servers not appearing on
the master list.

RE: [hlds] Running behind a firewall, getting the external IP to register....

2007-09-25 Thread DLinkOZ
The only times I've had problems showing up on the master servers, it could
always be attributed to a missing SNAT rule. Bottom line, requests came in
on one of the extra IPs assigned to my firewall, but they went out the
default IP. A SNAT rule would rewrite things so that it properly showed the
correct source IP from my server as the extra IP, and not the default (hosts
expected .23, but received the response from the default of .22).

Everytime I've started up a server, the master servers have always had it in
less then 60 seconds. I should qualify that statement by saying that I
currently only run OP4 and HL1MP:S servers. Can't comment on CS, DOD, etc.

That doesnt necessarily indicate a problem at your end, the master servers
can take a few days to pick up servers sometimes, if ppl can connect to
the
server ok by using connect : then there is no problem your end
and
the master servers will add you eventually depending on the servers

I know it's not what you want to read, but that really is the deal. To
solve
that type of problem on the older source servers, one would have used
Matties Scripting. Once Valve release the SDK for the Orangebox, then I
would be very surprised if Mattie doesn't do a version of his scripting
tool

There. Are you happier now? :-)

Yes you are right it can't. You'll have to wait until they release the

and plugin developer writes an admin / scripting tool that can.

Hi, i would like to use a mapcycle.txt with certain maps appearing twice
or
more e.g:

ctf_2fort
cp_well
cp_dustbowl
tc_hydro
cp_gravelpit
ctf_2fort
cp_granary
cp_dustbowl
cp_well
ctf_2fort
tc_hydro
cp_dustbowl

The problem is in the above example cp_granary is never played as after
the
second ctf_2fort it goes back to cp_well in essence the mapcycle
becomes:

ctf_2fort
cp_well
cp_dustbowl
tc_hydro
cp_gravelpit

Am i right in thinking that the source dedicated server can not
distinguish
between having a map appear more than once in the mapcycle (i know in
cs:s
you could fix this with maniadmin or other plugins)?
and if so will there ever be a separate fix or is this something the
plugin
community will have to fix?

Many Thanks

RE: [hlds] Running behind a firewall, getting the external IP to register....

2007-09-25 Thread Noctaire
FWIW, I'm running a Sonicwall TZ170 on this particular connection.

All in all, it's more than a tad irritating. I've run HLDS behind a
firewall in the past and never experienced this issue and I can't believe
Valve would be so shortsighted as to design the server/trackers such that
they do not work for servers behind a NAT/PAT configuration. The firewall
performs stateful packet inspection but it's configured to route the ports
as a public server. Maybe packet size? Could be packets are fragmenting as
they pass-through/leave the firewall.

RE: [hlds] TF2 Admin Listener

2007-09-25 Thread Mike Munoz
I have been using Remote Voice admin for TF2. Works great so far!
Here's how it works:

Whenever I play TF2 (or any game really) I am in a Ventrilo server with all
the Admins from my community. A few of them don't have TF2 yet but they can
still admin the server via HLSW. I simply call out a guys name or steam ID
(via Status in console) over Ventrilo and like magic the offending player is
either banned or kicked as needed. Cvars can be changed just at will... And
the best part is the Admin remains completely anonymous!

All admin mods should work this easily. :)

I'm thinking of offering this as a service..
Voice Admin! Coming soon to a server near you!

LOL...

Your tool sounds good too. If My Admins ever get tired of remoting for me
I'll give it a try :)

Maybe valve is just using the value you send in +ip as the address for
servers rather than the endpoint address. I assume they would then filter
out private subnets. That would cause this problem. I doubt they are doing
that though.

I do know for a fact it is a firewall issue. The NAT translation is doing

RE: [hlds] Running behind a firewall, getting the external IP to register....

2007-09-25 Thread Mike Munoz
Noctaire
I can relate to your problem although I don't have a solution as of yet.
I have 10 servers on 2 boxes that are on a NAT firewall and people can play
on them fine but they do not show up on the Steam Master Server List (SMSL).
So they essentially sit there empty.

The firewall must doing something to the packets that the SMSL doesn't like.
I have been planning to do some packet sniffing to attempt to make some
sense of this problem but have not had the time.

Also, for clarification, what kind of firewall is it? Make and Model, if
known.

qUiCkSiLvEr:
For clarification, the Wiki states:

Source Dedicated Server:
Command-line parameters
-ip - Specifies the IP when multiple network cards are installed.
Console variables
+ip - Specifies the IP when multiple network cards are installed (Old, but
still works).

Half-Life Dedicated Server (Gold Source, i.e. CS 1.6)
Some useful console variables :
+ip - Specifies the IP when multiple network cards are installed.

The -ip or +ip parameter is used when you have multiple IP's on the Server
so that HLDS or SRCDS knows which IP (of the available IP's) you want to
bind to.
>From my experience you can only use the -ip or +ip if you have that IP bound
to one of your network cards. If you attempt to use an external IP when the
server has a Private LAN IP address the server won't start. The SMSL will
normally use the public IP from which it sees your server connect from.

I can see and was able to connect to your server by direct query but
could not see it by general query in the server browser or in 3rd party
lists (game monitor for example).

http://qsextreme.com/tf/domicile.png

Since the hostport shown in the direct query was 27015 you apparently do
have your firewall and router set right but being unable to find the server
in the general browser virtually always means that you are not publishing
the external IP for a server behind a router doing nat.

You must use "-ip " in the server launch options for
your server to become visible to the general public (not +ip).

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Command_line

Important note:
You won't be able to see your own server in the server browser if you have
both the server and your client behind the same router, use a 3rd party
browser like gamemonitor to check and make sure you got all the launch
options set right.

Did I miss any news relavant to this?

11:42:15 "sv_master_legacy_mode" = "0" ( def. "1" )
  - Use old (outside-of-Steam) code to communicate with master servers.

Subject: [hlds] Master server reporting beta

We have new code in development that changes how servers report to the
server list (in anticipation of increasing the information in that
stream). The initial change has no feature changes, it is just a
different code path for reporting the same information.

We need in field testing of this feature, can you please put
"sv_master_legacy_mode 0" in your server.cfg to test this feature and
then monitor the presence of your server on the Steam master server
lists (via the Steam serverbrowser ideally).

Once we have had this "shake down cruise" this setting will be made
default.

Same thing I'm seeing here. I see that someone else connected by the logfiles,
so I'm guessing that was you. :)

Now, if I use the -ip parameter, the server tells me it can't find an IP to
bind to. If I use BOTH the - and + parameters, it starts up ok. Does that
work or...?

Actually, the client sees it as being on the LAN and brings up there just fine.
 :) (Gotta love an 11ms ping. )

2007-09-25 Thread Kevin Ottalini

Noctaire:

It cant bind to an ip that it doesnt use, when you forward the ports
directly to the server any connections being attempted on those ports
are translated to your servers local ip so just set it to your local
ip.

Oh, I understand that of course. Problem is, the server doesn't show up
in the list of available servers; i.e., it's not in the public server
list.

Anyone running behind a firewall?

Got the server up and running -- no sweat. I piped 27000-27030, TCP &
UDP,
over to the box. I can play it on the LAN, no problem.

Now, having it update to the outside world...that's another story.

If I start the server with the +IP command line parameter and use the IP
on
the firewall's external interface, the server chokes and shuts down. It
is,
of course, only showing up on the client side as being on the LAN.

Suggestions?

A...I did not know that. Thanks for the tip.

Right now I'm working on putting together a decent server.cfg file as well.
Someone over on the SRCDS forums posted a zipfile of spreadsheets with a TON
of cvars and such; pretty sweet. A bit disappointing, not having a good
sample server.cfg though. I hate building 'em from scratch. One thing I'm
not seeing is a token to eliminate respawn delays (but then again, that may
be the default and the servers I've hit with delays added the delay).
 Been a while.

That doesnt necessarily indicate a problem at your end, the master servers
can take a few days to pick up servers sometimes, if ppl can connect to the
server ok by using connect : then there is no problem your end and
the master servers will add you eventually depending on the servers uptime.
