Re: [hlds] Bladecenter anything worth?

2010-02-21 Thread Matt Stanton
Obviously, virtualization does cause you to lose a small amount of
hardware power to the extra operating system overhead of vistualizing
many machines on one physical server. What you can gain in reliability
may make it worth it, though.

Basically, you could guarantee that any 'dedicated server' is available
much more reliably. If you connect your bladecenter to a SAN of some
sort, and are able to intelligently distribute VMs over the blades, then
if a piece of physical hardware goes down, the VM can be automatically
booted on hardware that is running properly, with very little data loss
because of I/O that was interrupted by the hardware issue. Since all
the data from all the servers is stored on the SAN, the data is somewhat
shielded from hardware failure.

There are a few virtual machine platforms that will allow you to
accomplish this, including, I believe, VMWare ESXi (I think they changed
the name of this recently) or Xen... You'll have to do your own
research into these if no one else replies, since I have absolutely no
experience with virtualization. You will also probably have to expect
that you will be spending a huge amount of money building a SAN that is
both fast and reliable. If you run the datacenter that the servers are
hosted from, then you could also expect better cooling and power usage
efficiency by going this direction, and if not, you will at least be
using less rack space. A bladecenter will require a lot more power per
rack than a rack full of 1U/2U servers, so you may have to pay extra per
rack for the extra amperage you'll need.

Hi,

I do not have a answer to this question. Just wanted to add I'm highly
interested in this information as well. How well do bladecenters perform in
regard with gamingservers.

Cheers,

Im looking to build up a new farm of servers for my company. We are

An NFO VPS is superior to all other VPSs for gaming. Good choice.

Re: [hlds] Mani site down / DNS problem

2010-02-21 Thread Michael Secord
Doing some digging it looks like the nameservers
(ns1/ns2.xfactorservers.com) are failing right now, even though their
site is up, but of course, their site use ns1-ns4.firehost.com. So, if I
had to give you a reason their site was down, xfactor server's
nameservers are failing right now. Probably a temporary issue and will
be fixed with the starting of tomorrow's workweek.

Re: [hlds] Mani site down / DNS problem

2010-02-21 Thread Jeff Sugar
What? Sourcemod is a million times more intuitive and easier to manage. I
literally cannot think of one reason to use mani, especially with the
various issues it has just from being so goddamn outdated. If you would like
some personal help switching over to sourcemod, feel free to send me a
private email or join #hlserveradmins on irc.gamesurge.net and I'd be glad
to give you a hand. Also, there's definitely a way to port over your
funcommands plugin. I can likely find you a proper replacement that is as
good, or better, than everything you are running on your mani install right
now

Noobish? Sourcemod has virtually the same look-alike menus, and with plugins
you can do the exact same thing (plus a ton more) than mani, plus...when an
update comes out you don't have to wait for someone to update the binaries.

TBH, my admins are too noobish to move to Sourcemod. Too used to it I
guess :/

I've been trying to work around with the supers so we can setup
sourcebans. Plus one of my coders made some modifications to funmenu.
Hopefully we can dump it (mani) on the plain server, but Hosties uses
some parts of mani to do it's work. Until i can code around that, it has
to be there.

That's true, SourceMod is where it's at / has been for quite some time now.
Perhaps it's time to move up from child modding?

Re: [hlds] GSP Hosting Questions

2010-02-21 Thread MONDO
I for one appreciate the discussion. We currently rent a dedicated box from
Limestone, but we're always interested in what else is available so we can
provide the best gaming experience for our community. Great insight so far,
if nothing else in the form of helping some folks find providers that they
may not find on their own (lets face it, the ones that spam ads all over the
place aren't necessarily the best providers, right?)

Re: [hlds] GSP Hosting Questions

2010-02-21 Thread Shane Arnold
Actually, I would say this is very relevant, considering a lot of people
on this list especially (Windows) would not be server owners and infact
would be GSP customers ;) It's good to get feedback (especially if you
are a GSP with negative feedback) so you can use it to improve your
services ;)

So what you're saying is that Hypernia won't let you put

 ticket
I had to get the server owner to send in a ticket allowing me to
request stuff for them. (They don't allow clients to uplaod .dll
files on their 'By the slot' servers)
 2) Getting them to allow me to have a 16-slot L4D2 server.
 Resolved
in 12 hours, though that was due to me sending the ticket and
 going to
bed :P actual respose to the first ticket was like 45 minutes.
 3) Getting L4Downtown updated. Done in an hour.

Re: [hlds] GSP Hosting Questions

2010-02-21 Thread DontWannaName!
This may have to do with game servers but do you really think everyone on
the list needs to hear about this discussion. This is the kind of topic that
makes Valve want to switch us over to forums. If you want any constructive
feedback you should go to srcds.com where they know about every host and are
probably more unbiased than here. I bet if you search their forums, you will
find everything you need to know and want to know about every notable host
there is.
