[hlds] RE: [hlds_linux] Server specs

2005-06-17 Thread Elminst
Alfred Reynolds [EMAIL PROTECTED] spoke forth:
I find myself being asked quite often about what CPU/net
requirements it takes to run a server. I have answers
based upon our internal playtesting but I would also like
to hear what you guys use in the wild.

 So, my questions are:
 1) What speed CPU do you use for a 32 player HL1 server
(CS 1.6) 2) What speed CPU do you use for a 32 player
Source server (CS:S) 3) How much bandwidth per user do
you allow for a HL1 server 4) How much bandwidth per user
do you allow for a Source server 5) How much difference
is there in these requirements for other mods?

 - Alfred

Anyone remember this file that went around a lot way back in the day?
http://www.cs-onp.com/files/elminst/transfer.xls
Spreadsheet to calculate the bandwidth needed for x # of players on a CS
server.

Unfortunately it is woefully out of date at this point, since he was running
the server on a P2-450.
Ahh, those halcyon days of 1999-2000; when you could run a 16 player server
and stats webpage all on a p2-400 with 256 ram...

I'd love to see an update to this, or something like it.

RE: [hlds] disappearing bans?

2004-11-30 Thread Elminst
 -Original Message-
 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of David Fencik

Correct. That is what I'm saying. Note that bans are not removed by
execing a banned.cfg whose contents are a subset of the current banned
list. To speak in mathematical jibberish...upon execution of exec
banned.cfg, the set of all bans is equal to the union of the set of
currently banned users and the set of users contained in the banned.cfg.
The only way to remove bans from the banned.cfg file through rcon is to
remove bans from the current list of bans and then to writeid (or wait
until your server restarts and writeid). If your current list of bans
is empty, then your banned.cfg will be empty.

If you change your firing order to the following, you'll be all set:

 exec banned.cfg
 exec listip.cfg
 writeid

 Dave

Okay... done this and we'll see what happens.
I still think it's pretty lame though.
A writeid should do just that; write the bans in memory to the file. If
there are no bans, then nothing should be written to the file! At most it
should do an append, not a complete overwrite, and you get a couple blank
lines at the end of the file.

What if you wanted to remove a ban from the banned.cfg, and only had
rcon access to the server? You wouldn't be able to do this if writeid
behaved the way you would like it to. Also, I see no benefit of extra
blank lines at the end of any file.

 Dave

You remove a ban by typing removeid id Same as always.
The point is that writeid should not completely overwrite the banned.cfg,
ever.

[hlds] disappearing bans?

2004-11-29 Thread Elminst
Anyone seen this before?
I'll ban several people over a couple of days, and then go back a few days
later and the banned.cfg will be either empty or have totally different
entries in it?
What is happening?

I have the following in the server.cfg, which is set to exec on mapchanges;
writeid
exec banned.cfg
exec listip.cfg

But bans keep disappearing.. Why?

 Interesting.

 I too have seen this.

I am using HLSW and have to 'write' the ban or they delete in
24hrs. Or at least this is what I have seen.

I'm also using hlsw, that's what first clued me in on it.
But even when I write the file using hlsw, they disappear at random.

This behavior is by design. The bans don't save unless you write them.
They will disappear every time the server is restarted, which in your
 case is every 24hours.

 Dave

Yes.. but that's what the writeid at the end of the server.cfg is supposed
to do.
So the bans get written to the file on every map change.

So you're saying that when the server.cfg is loaded on first startup, a
writeid will clear the ban file?
If true, then that's not how it used to work, and is also pretty frickin
lame.

Is there a link to this? Or do you need to go to the EB store? Are the

Re: [hlds] HLDS Win2k Server follow Networking Question

2001-10-19 Thread Elminst

I always get confused on what those two terms actually mean...
I've always thought that half-dupe meant that packets only went one
direction at a time (in or out), and that full meant that you had packets
going both ways at the same time
Am i totally off on this?

Don't forget that hubs operate at half duplex, while switches operate at
 full duplex.

 Kelly Johnson wrote:

In response to Hubs vs Switches.
One of the biggest differences between the two is this, the hub runs
all connections at the speed of the slowest connection. Thus if you have
a
4 port hub with 3 100mb/sec connections plugged into it, and 1 10mb/sec
connection plugged into it, all 4 connections will only run at 10mb/sec.
However a switch will run each connection at its maximum speed. Thus if
you
have a 4 port switch with 3 100mb/sec connections plugged into it, and 1
10mb/sec connection plugged into it, the 3 100mb/sec connections will all
run at 100mb/sec while the 10mb/sec connection will run at 10mb/sec.

(To achieve this most switches also have some sort of imbedded
controller,
this means that many switches also allow you to make some changes to
their
configuration, such as Nat translation, port forwarding and the like.
The
configuration changes available vary by switch manufacturer. Hubs
however,
typically have no controller and thus typically are not configurable.)

Subject: [hlds] HLDS Win2k Server follow Networking Question

I'm not as experienced as most of you, but I set up a simple network with
a
full T-1 coming through the Intel Express 8220 Router (vs. a Cisco...it
was
only $700 new, has the CSU/DSU built in, and a slick Device View menu
interface) to a 650 Athlon w/ 256 RAM running Win2k Server (not Advanced
Server) with 2 NIC's. I put the higher quality 3Com Etherlink Server
(3CR990SV97 model) as the LAN NIC, and set this up with Client for MS
Networks, File and Print Sharing and TCP/IP protocols with the
settings
 Manuel had also said below.

I then use the 3Com 3C905C-TX-M NIC for the WAN, but only have TCP/IP
enabled (no Client for MS Networks or File/Print Sharing) to protect the
Server PC and insulate the LAN. I also run BID NAV on both the Server
and
LAN PC. These are all networked to a 10/100 SMC switch (I heard that a
switch is faster than a HUB...but am still confused about what the
differences and indications of Hubs vs. Switches is), where the router
CAT
 cable connects into.

Because I know that Win2k Server has much faster, and allows more
simultaneous connections, I put my HLDS on the Win2k Server box, and
running
it with a custom user profile. I also Ghosted and image in case it gets
hacked. I can restore it back from the 3 CD's (I have lots of maps!)
pretty
quick. I have nothing else on the Win2k Server PC.

How does this setup sound to you? The pings for people are superba
lot
are getting pings under 50! I am also now running a second HLDS, both
running as shortcuts..not as services. So far the most people I have had
connected to both games running is about 35...and no crashes or other
problems have come up running this for about a week straight (have not
had
 to reboot, or restart, etc.).

Sorry this is so long...I'm getting to the heart of my question, but
another
thought I had was at some point to get another (a third) dedicated (used)
PC
box from someone, and use that as a dedicated game server, running Win2k
Pro, put 2 NIC's in it, also plug them both into the switch, and then
configure one NIC to directly connect to the Internet (only using TCP/IP)
with another one of the block of public IP's. Then have the 2nd NIC
connect
in to the LAN so I could have configuring access from the network. If I
did
that I would also likely get one of those keyboard/mouse/monitor A/B
switches so I didn't have to put up another monitor.

I guess my real question is: Is there anything wrong with having the
Win2k
Server box that is also the gateway NAT routing PC run the HLDS games if
that's all I have on it? People are getting excellent pings, with many
under 50! I understand that the Server PC will get a bit more stressed
if
I do file transfers, surfing, emailing, play HL as client, etc. from the
LAN
PC I have now...but I thought that most all of these LAN requests just
get
passed right through the Win2K Server box out to the Internet. Is there
any
point to setting up a third PC as a dedicated game server which would
have a
 less powerful OS on it?

Again, my apologies for this being so long, and many thanks for any
 feedback.

 Here's some framerate tips

with opengl, turn on vsync, and set your monitor refresh rate to say
100hz.
(You can use powerstrip if windows won't let you go over 85hz) Then in HL
console type fps_max 100 w/o the quotes. You should now get up to 100
fps
in quiet locations. I don't think fps_max will go higher then 100,
though,
 I could be wrong.

  If you're running in OpenGL or D3D with net_graph 1/2, you're
  going to take
a fairly severe frame rate hit. If you run with net_graph 3
  it should run a
lot better, without the pretty colors.

I noticed this early on when I first started using net_graph. I settled
on
net_graph 3 because of the massive FPS hit using the graphically enabled
 net_graph modes...

Speaking of FPS, any idea Erik what may cause the following? My nVidia
GF2
MX PCI card gives either 75 FPS or 37.5 FPS, without anything in between,
using OpenGL (I've never tried D3D). Eric Hall has a GF2 Ultra AGP, and
said he noticed the same behavior. This seems very wierd to me. It's
like
full or half, no middle ground. I'm running W2K Pro SP2, Nvidia ref
drivers
version 12.41. It is viewpoint dependant. If I look in a direction where
there are no players behind the foreground object, say the rock wall
beside
the APC in Militia, it is 75 FPS. If I then turn and look 180 degrees the
other way, where there are player models on the other side of the map, the
FPS drops to exactly 37.5. Wierd Any ideas?
