RE: [hlds] srcds Crashing Woes

2006-07-02 Thread Paladin82
Here is my set up.

Win2k3
DoD:S
VAC, CVAR-X v1.0, SBS v1.1
Mani Admin Plugin v1.2BetaN, MetaMod:Source v1.2.3

The only time I notice a crash since the update is when one of the new maps
loads right after the other. So for example if I load Colmar then Jagd I
crash on Jagd, if I load Jagd then Colmar I crash on Colmar, now if I load
Colmar then Anzio then Jagd or the opposite no problem.

Also no errors in the logs and no I don't have access to the event logs.

Very strange...

You should see the callstack without the symbol files, but they will not
show the source where it crashes ( but some asm ).
And srcds does not ship with symbol files, offcourse that could come in
handy at times:) But most of the time when srcds crashes its the plugin that
does something wrong ( Im my xp at least ).

Well, your point about access to the Event Log on rented servers is very
well taken and would prevents that approach, without the cooperation of the
hoster.

Now, my vs.net debugging is rusty - so I stand to be corrected but: do you
not have to have the symbols file (.dpg or .dbg) accessible to vs.net in
order to obtain the call stack frames, etc? Some mods ship with these files
- but not all. (Which is to be expected, since apps compiled with debug
are not quite as performant). I have not been able to locate a symbols file
for srcds.exe - I don't think one is shipped.

The vast majority of exceptions are trappable in exception handling blocks.
Exception wrapping is a bit of a coding pain, to be sure, but eventually, as
with all good coding practices, it become habit. Even if the server Event
Log is not the best choice - dropping a simple It was me that bombed your
server message in text file would go a long way to helping mod users
isolate issues. It's not a criticism - it’s just a suggestion.

I don't think downloading, installing and figuring out VS.NET Express is
something that a lot of server admins have the time or patience to work
through. I don't think they should have to.

Frazer

hehe,

Well I'm sure we can get better at adding try/catch I certainly can. But
adding any errors we find to event log would not be that helpful. As those
admins who rent servers are likely not to have access to the event log (
Also I don't think admins are gonna check the event log for errors regarding
their servers, their gonna check the server logs + admin tool logs ). So the
challage is to get a meaning full error into there.

And the reason i replyed, to make my previus email more clear. anyone
should be able to find out what crashed their server ( as long as they can
download the crash files from the srcds root folder).
Simple download VS.net ( 2005 Express Edition is free, i assume it comes
with a debuger ). Open the dump file. Find the callstack window, and there
you should see what plugin last did something (You may have to scroll a bit
down).
Then simply contact the author of that tool, and give him the crash dump.
Offcourse a certain way of reproducing the crash is allways better in my
book ;)

Thanks for the tip on the crashdump - trying that now to see if it isolates
things a bit better. As to predicting where the bugs are gonna happen -
the whole point of wrapping ALL non-trivial blocks of code in
error-reporting exception handling is exactly that we don't know where the
bugs are :)

is, log excerpts and minidumps would be useful). How do you know you are
losing VAC? How do you know that a restart doesn't fix the problem (do
you wait a little for login sequence to complete?) What are the
configurations of the machines with the problem? Do you have other
machines that do not exhibit the problem?

We need VAC fixed asap as this is getting out of controle!!

RE: [hlds] STEAM_ID_PENDING???

2005-12-22 Thread Paladin82
Yeah, I have had a few of these myg0t guys on my server. But we have a
standing rule to Ban them by IP as soon as they get connected.

For any of you that don't know, Myg0t is a group of people whose only
mission is to ruin the online gamming experience for legitimate players.
Mygot is also the largest distributors of hacks.

If you see them on your servers, ban them immediately by IP or they just
keep reconnecting.

It's an exploit that cheaters are using. We had some problems with this
issue (including players with myg0t tags) until we installed this plugin:

It kicks anyone who manages to spawn with a Steam ID still pending.

Problem seems to be solved until VALVe fixes this issue.

You get No Steam Logon when that client has failed to connect to VAC2
properly. Get them to check the various firewall settings described in
the help link when you get that error.

We have released an update to the Half-Life 1: Engine. Run the
hldsupdatetool to get it.

This update fixes VAC2 connection problems for people with multiple
network interfaces, fixes the -sport command line parameter and adds a
CVAR querying API for 3rd party tools. More details can be found here:
http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=newsid=434

If you run ANY kind of HL1 based server (i.e TFC, DoD, CS 1.6, NS ) you
should get this update.

This isn't VAC1, it is a new set of servers. Something is preventing you
connecting to them. Hping2 is a useful tool to debug network
 connectivity problems.

Try running only 1 server on that machine and double check the firewall
settings (on both the server machine and any router/NAT devices you may
have). If that fails then go to our customer support site, it has a
 detailed debugging guide.

1. remove any existing permissions for hldsupdatetool.exe from your firewall
permissions (if there are any)

2. you should only be running one software firewall at a time - ZoneAlarm
under XP SP2 is problematic

3. remove all permissions before disabling firewalls (many don't stop
blocking unless you do)

4. delete the installrecord.blob and clientregistry.blob files in the
hlserver/hl2server folder

5. run hldsupdatetool without any arguments to make sure you have the latest
tool (it will update after deleting the blob files)

6. do updates for all installed mods.

Does't hurt to run several online anti-virus and spyware scans and make sure
you're clean there are trojans/spyware that can mess up your winsock.

Programs like x-fire and google remote desktop hijack your internet as a LSP
(layered service provider) that can also cause problems, you shouldn't be
running those on a game server.

You can check your winsock by running lspfix:

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

For XP you should see:

mswsock.dll (Tcpip)
winrnr.dll (NTDS)
rsvpsp.dll (Protocol handler)

if you see mslsp.dll then you have an infection.

Guys it's not the maps on the server that are out of date.
It seems that it's on the client side. It has happened to me as well.
I had to delete the maps that were different, and then I rejoined the
server
and downloaded the correct version. The problem is that my server is
losing
popularity, because of this error. Most people don't know enough to delete
the map and rejoin. We should have a way to force the download if the map
 differs, help us out Valve.

 Just as a comment Stephen,

There is probably a period of time where a client appears to be up to
date, but rather he just needed to wait a while for to update to get
scheduled in for his particular content server - there is always a little
skew there at the leading edge of the release (in fact, there probably is
an
intentional scheduling skew to try and prevent an instantaneous demand of
1 million players all trying to get the update the hot instant it is
 released).

By downloading 'the current map to the players (instead of making the
players log out and log back in, or wait a while for the update to become
available), you have created a situation now where the next time that map
is
updated by Steam, the client will be guaranteed to suddenly have an out of
date map (and any other updated content) that he now has to manually go
and
 delete.

This quite defeats the purpose in having the GCF and auto-update system.

In other words, you have now sewn the seeds of the next wave of
 your map is different complaints.

Unfortunately, both the client and the server were up to date and the
problem was not just with one server but with all servers. Giving the
client the map file, fixed the problem for all servers and not just one.

The client's will always have the latest version in their GCF files (they
have no choice) but they can copy older versions into the external maps
directory which supercede what is in the GCF.

Indeed, which is why the _new_ bsp file from the server on the client
 fixed the problem.
Actually, it is possible for the server to be more up to date than the
client. The client will only be updated if the user logs out and logs
back in again. A client that remains logged in does not update, nor is
there a means to instigate an update from within the client.

I have to say that I am guilty of just this, because I am on broadband
and I work in the computer industry, so my computers generally stay on
24/7. Value/Steam will find that this kind of practice becomes more and
more prevalent, if it isn't already. This is not a recommendation for
automated updates, only for a means to check for updates from within
 the client.

Servers on the other hand may not do an update at the same time so
suddenly
the server is out of sync with the client.

If one client in a while has this problem, then the client is probably at
 fault.

At the time there were a number of people complaining of being kicked
from multiple server for unmatched maps - most seems to come right
(probably because of a mix of clients and servers being out of sync).
However, there were a few people who had the latest updates (clean
installs in some cases) and the servers were up to date as well and
still couldn't connect. The solution that I posted did solve the
 problem for those people.

You can run an HLDS update on the server with the -verify_all switch and
it
will check all the content against the master list which is what the
clients
 are updated with.

I would recommend extending the params to running the update tool with
-verify_all and -game gamename. The reason being, that in my efforts to
get my server on the master lists I've been ensuring that the server is
 up to date. Running

My client had updated. But I still had to delete maps that were causing the

If its stored within the cache file, you just have to wait till their client
updates.

Actually, it is possible for the server to be more up to date than the

there a means to instigate an update from within the client.

You can run an HLDS update on the server with the -verify_all switch and
it
will check all the content against the master list which is what the

 are updated with.

I would recommend extending the params to running the update tool with
-verify_all and -game gamename. The reason being, that in my efforts to
get my server on the master lists I've been ensuring that the server is
up to date. Running with -verify_all only appears to update the
half-life part of the server only. Specifying the game will check the
files in the specified game folder as well as the half-life engine.

I have to say that this is an observation for Day

[hlds] Map Differs from Server?

2004-07-16 Thread Paladin82
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
Is there a way to config the server to get the clients to over write the map
they have on their systems?

I have a lot of users that are complaining that they can't connect to my
server because the Map they have on their system is not the same. I end up
having to tell them to delete the map then join the server to get the one we
use.

Thanks

Yes, ThePlanet and ServerMatrix are within the same company. I am an
employee there, and I work in the NOC (tech support). It is great to here
good remarks about good support! We have 8 major backbone providers with a
total of 12 gigabits of redundant bandwidth. The difference between SM and
ThePlanet's servers is mostly in price. They both provide outstanding
performance and are of top quality. I do see more issues, from a tech
standpoint, on the SM boxes. The reason for this, we sell a lot more SM
servers and most of the users toy with their boxes ALL the time, which
ususally ends up in some type of issue because a miss configuration or error
on the user's end. I really hope you enjoy your SM or ThePlanet box! If you
haven't picked one yet, I would highly recommend the entry level Total
Control server in the Pro series for hosting game servers. Duel Xeons
clocked at 2.8ghz with hyper-threading provides and extream machine to host
lots of game servers. I have a similar setup there on Win2k3 and I can host
a solid 8 servers on my machine. Hope this helps!

Do you mean single homed?

If so, then you are mistaken, theplanet actually buys from multiple
backbones.
But, if he got a server with them, then of course /he/ would be
single-homed.

The Planet and ServerMatrix, to my knowledge, are both operated by the same
company, The Planet's bandwidth is more quality geared, while ServerMatrix
more value, but don't get me wrong, ServerMatrix offers a great
performance/price ratio with adequate hardware available for lease.

I know the other guys said The Planet, but this company is part of 'em,
and their dedicated server deals are definitely worth checking out.

We went with one of these rather than colo. The hardware was comparable,
but we ended up with more bandwidth than the colo plans offered, and at
a cheaper price. Service and support have been awesome in the few months
we've been with 'em.

There was a weird temporary outage today though. Both Server Matrix and
The Planet fell off the face of the earth for a few minutes, then
everything came back. First outage we've had with 'em though.

This might be related to the long name exploit currently being used. It
causes severe lag with all the players in the server and sometimes crashes
the server.

We'll be releasing a fix for this either later today or tomorrow. More
information will be sent to the mailing list when the release is ready.

I seem to lose a few clients every 10/15 minutes. The symptoms are they
are experiencing lag yet their ping is under 60ms. Then they either
recover or drop.
Firewall log shows that there was a lot of UDP traffic on port 0 coming
from the clients. The firewall interprets this as a teardrop DoS attempt
and filters those packets.

This was not the case with 4.1.0.7. Is this related to the new voice
comms ? We could sacrifice the voice feature if need be.

Would it be possible that someone could publish what TCP and UDP ports
HLDS 4.1.0.8 b2 needs to have open ?
