[hlds] CS:S Update failure

2004-11-04 Thread Rick Comcast
I keep getting this when updating the Counter-Strike Source dedicated
server:
...
Verifying: c:\hl2server\cstrike\resource\gameui_thai.txt
Verifying: c:\hl2server\cstrike\resource\modevents.res
Downloading: c:\hl2server\cstrike\resource\modevents.res
Connection Reset, WinSock Error 10054 Connection reset by peer

Is this common? Should I just try again or is there a bigger problem. The
update fails at the same point every time.

Thanks in advance...

RE: [hlds] 3 PC Connections from the same Network [OT]

2004-08-27 Thread Rick Comcast
I am by far no expert, but run a lan server for some events I sponser and
maybe able to help. Just give some more details on what your lan and server
configuration are.

This is exactly what this list is for, and your question is very legitimate
and should be given more attention by the members of this list. Maybe if we
start a real dialog, the real experts here can help shed some light on a
solution to your problem.

Couple of things:

1. Why is this off topic? I thought that I was doing something incorrectly
with my server and needed to fix it. Isn't that what this forum is for?
Admins who are having issues with their server and to get them responded to?
BTW I really do appreciate the response. I am not bashing just trying to
figure out what the forum is for? I get This is very off-topic for this
list, but you can find the answer here: but its okay to personally attack
someone. Not sure but I think that one of these is more related to server
issues then the other. Just my two cents here, and I apologize if I have
broken the use of this forum.

2. Ryan, I am not sure what your reasons for bashing my kids are but I
really don't appreciate it. First and foremost its for my 18 Year old and
my 15 Year old more then it is my 7 8 year olds. As for your attitude I
find it hard to believe that ANY of my kids could behave close to as poorly
as you have just behaved. If you have issues with people's maturity level
maybe perhaps its not them that has the issue its you.

RE: [hlds] New Video Card For HL2?

2004-08-08 Thread Rick Comcast
It's my undersanding that the 6800 requires a more robust power supply, in
the order of at least 500W but 600W is recommended. The X800 has no enhanced
power supply requirements. That should also be considered when upgrading.
This could easily add several hundred $$ to the total upgrade prce.

I just got a new computer from Newegg. Newegg has some of the cheapest

I got an evga geforce 6800 from newegg.com. They have this cool program
that lets you upgrade within 90 days if you outgrow it that quickly,
which I did. A 6800 gt is now on it's way.

An nVidia 6800 is the only way to go. Bite the bullet and fork out $500

Anyone know where these are currently being sold?

 Hey All

I know this isn't a server question, so feel free to flame me till
your heart's content. But I'm considering buying a new video card to
be able to better play HL2. My current system is a AMD Athalon XP
2000 with a gig of ram and a Nvidia GeForce 4 graphics card.

I tried Doom3 (which i heard has similar system requirements to those
of HL2) on the lowest settings and it barfed. So I'm thinking in
getting a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128) to be able to better enjoy newer
 video games.

My question is, is just upgrading the video card going to be enough to
let me play HL2? Perhaps someone from Valve could comment.

And yes, I've read the system requirements. PIII 800 mhz DX6
Compatible. But Doom3 said it would run just fine on a lower end
system as well and it just died.

 Any Info?

 Thanks.

I figured out how to do it, and here it is for anyone else as noobish as
myself
the command prompt in xp pro automatically goes to my documents and won't
get off of it except for another drive.
So what I did was install this little gem
http://www.larkware.com/Articles/VS.NETCommandPromptHere.html and follow
it's instructions. (really simple) then right click and open your hl folder
key in hldsupdatetool.exe -command etc and that's it! easy
thanks for reading or scrolling past my post :-)

RE: [hlds] [OT] GISP's: Rental rates for HL2

I thought DOD was also slated for multiplayer in HL2?

I didn't think there was going to be a HL2 DM, as I read somewhere
(aren't I lucky to forget? lol) that there wasn't going to be any kind
of HL2 multiplayer other than CS: Source. If there is, then I suppose it
is just a mod, but I figured since it's the one and only, and it (was)
going to be HL2's only multiplayer, that I didn't consider it a mod. Oh
well, doesn't really matter at all anyways.

Yeah, I think it needs to be thought of now along the lines of being a
Gameplay variation now more than a mod... like how HLDM, DMC, Ricochet
(lol) are different types of gameplay... or like how Onslaught,
Assault, CTF, DM are gameplay types for UT2k4.

I think most people would consider a mod to be development work that
originated with the SDK, ouside of the Valve realm. Now that Valve owns
it and offers it, it becomes a gameplay variation.

I wouldn't think CS Source should be referred to as HL2 multiplayer, if
there is going to be an HL2 DM... seems more logical that the
multiplayer gampeplay of the SP game, should be referred as that

w/e... semantics.
