Add "-debug" to the ./srcds_run command line to generate a debug.log to

As promised I've made some config files for some possible server
configurations which you can find at
http://www.outerlight.com/serverconfigs/.

We'll be setting our servers to Team VIP mode only, but hope that admins
will pick some different options to give a selection. Players will be
able to use the 'votemode' command to change the game mode if they want
anyway unless disabled at the server.

Subject: [hlds] The Ship Free Weekend 9th-11th Feb

Hi Everyone,

I'm sending out a request on behalf of Outerlight, creators of The Ship
for the community to host some dedicated servers for the Free Weekend
that is taking place over Steam this weekend coming.

We'd be very grateful if anyone with the resources could host some
server instances for the duration of the weekend to give trial players a
good experience as we've had too many listen servers running on previous
weekends distorting first impressions of the game.

We've just recently added a new map and our first team modes - Team
Elimination and Team VIP to add to the existing non-team Hunt,
Eliminiation and Deathmatch.

The dedicated server for The Ship works both on windows and linux,
delivered via the hlsupdatetool as per other Source servers. However, it
does not use the base source engine files and should not be installed on
top of a CS, HL2DM server etc.. but in a separate folder.

With the hldsupdatetool installed into a new folder the commands to
install the server are

Windows : HldsUpdateTool.exe -command update -game "ship" -dir
C:\theship\
Linux : ./steam -command update -game ship -dir .

A server.cfg file lives in ship/cfg/ which can be tweaked - it should
look very familiar to other source config files. The server can then be
run via

Windows : C:\theship\srcds.exe -console +hostport 27015 -game ship +map
atalanta +maxplayers 16 +servercfgfile server.cfg +mapcyclefile
mapcycle.txt +log on
Linux : ./srcds_run -game ship +map atalanta +maxplayers 16
-autoupdate +servercfgfile server.cfg +mapcyclefile mapcycle.txt +log on

If you have any questions or need help with setup and configuration feel
free to post to the list or reply to me directly.

Thanks for any help you can give and hope to see you on board :)

RE: [hlds] Licensing fees for HL1 engine

2007-01-09 Thread Scott Pettit
This is one of the basic concepts of capitalism and any business model.
Business is entirely about a person or persons banding together with the
objective to make a profit.

If profit wasn't Valve's motivator, what would inspire them to continue
to build platforms like Steam, and release new games?

It doesn't just apply to Valve, it applies to _any_ company. If you
want them to do something, the reason they do it is because you're
either going to increase their bottom line, or because whatever you
aren't satisfied with is decreasing their bottom line.

RE: [hlds] Counter-Strike: Source and Source Engine Update Released - slowhacking begone!

2006-11-17 Thread Scott Pettit
I would say there's been a deluge of complaints regarding admins running
around doing things like unbind all on clients, or causing them to run
exploits of something along those lines. It wouldn't make sense for Valve
to spend time coding something without a reason to motivate them into doing
this.

Certainly with rate forcing on our servers - we were banning anyone who used
any method to get around the rates. _All_ of the players on our servers are
on some form of broadband, and thus there is no reason they should not be
using at the least rate 2, and a high cmd/update rate, as well as having
interp set to 0.01. Again as I said before though, if users don't want us
forcing our rates on them then that's fine, but we don't wish for them to be
on our non-profit, self funded (well into the range of 5 digits by myself)
servers, which we run with the aim of providing _DECENT_ servers [read: no
rating].

Just as it's the users choice not to have our rates shoved on them, it's our
choice not to have their rates shoved on us - and they're welcome to play
elsewhere if they are dissatisfied with our terms. However with this
setting being on by default we really don't have any choice but to remove
all rate forcing - which is only motivation to start encouraging the 7554
players seen in the last week to play something else.

With Warcraft it wouldn't be difficult to have it check if the client has it
turned on and then kick them with a message telling them why. However with
this on by default it means everyone gets kicked, and your average user
isn't going to figure this out. And yes, some prior notice would have been
nice - I had to drop everything to deal with the sudden banning of all the
users playing at the time.

Abuse or purpose. On a warcraft mod server you can have your weapon
dropped by players of a certain race. Don't fancy getting killed? Well
just turn on this CVar and nothing will happen.

RE: [hlds] Counter-Strike: Source and Source Engine Update Released - slowhacking begone!

2006-11-17 Thread Scott Pettit
It shouldn't be limited to certain commands.

Clients should have the right to choose not to have settings imposed on them
against their will, but this shouldn't be default behaviour - as this
command has only come about due to abuse.

For those of us running public servers with the aim of allowing the
community to enjoy the game (and subsequently helping Valve's bottom line by
making CS a huge game), I (and I'm sure others) would appreciate if this
command was off by default, as people abusing rates and interp settings are
already ruining public play.

Just remember Valve, so many games have failed because no one would run
servers - don't forget whose support you need to prolong your product life
cycle.

Then wouldn't the perfect setup be that this
doesn't allow the server operator to use the command bind, change this
restrict setting and not use quit, and just put your settings back to

Not this. This is
"Our clients pay for the game, not the server operators" forgetting
that fact that the reason they have millions of paying customers with
no monthly fee is that fact that we fork out for their servers.

I have to say that this is an excellent update, server operators have been
slowhacking clients way too long.

Just a few days ago someone posted on this very list how to maliciously mess
up a client, and the responses from many of you were all on the order of
"man that's a good one mwahahahahahahahaaa"

The way I see it, you guys brought this on yourselves.

It's about time Valve gave clients the ability to prevent this from
happening.

I personally hate going into servers and find my rates and basic settings
changed all over the place.

Thank you Valve.

RE: [hlds] Counter-Strike: Source and Source Engine Update Released

2006-11-16 Thread Scott Pettit
That's exactly what it does.

By all means - I utterly hate the little bastard admins out there who take
delight in client exec'ing bind all kill and so on, and by all means clients
should have every right to block this. On the other hand, clients
misbehaving by rating - server admins should have the choice to exclude
these people from their servers.

I absolutely support having this command available, but it should NOT be
defaulted to 1. As I said in my previous post, if clients want to elect not
to have my rates forced on them, then they can play on other servers - by
defaulting it to on, the average user on our servers who was quite happy
with having rates forced can't join.

Remember your average CS player isn't going to think to turn this off,
they're just going to join the server and find CVARX or zBlock or whatever
your plugin of choice bans them. Within 5 minutes of this update being out I
had three angry emails accusing me of banning people without reason.

Leave this command there, but for sanity's sake, default it to be off.

I can join servers okay now that I've disabled CVARX (we were only forcing a
minimum rate, cmdrate, updaterate, interp - what's the harm?).

CVARX ended up creating 200 bans in error which I'm now sitting removing.

A heads up would have been nice, as would some consultation prior to
inflicting such silly changes on those who have to deal with complaints
about people rating.

I can accept some clients might not want their settings fucked around with -
but at least make the default 0, and if clients choose not to have their
settings messed with, I'd rather they played elsewhere instead of my
servers. Now we're going to have to dish out bans to raters, rather than
just forcing their rates.

Also, yay for people who never seem to be able to get flashbanged, we like

In any case, it doesn't really matter, since nobody seems to be able to join

- Fixed a crash which could occur if the dynamic weapon price list
failed to download

Source Engine:
- Added new cl_restrict_server_commands to prevent unwanted commands
being run on game clients. The default value is 1, valid settings are:
0 = Don't restrict any server commands.
1 = Restrict server commands in Valve multiplayer games.
2 = Restrict server commands in all multiplayer games.
- Decreased startup time in some cases by rate-limiting the packets sent
to clients during logon
- Improved responsiveness when entering map areas with lots of entities
by automatically compressing large packet updates

RE: [hlds] need free cp

2006-11-12 Thread Scott Pettit
I've been running quite a few HLDS/SRCDS servers for about 6 years now - in
the end I've always found there was something in the tools out there I
hated, what exactly is it you're trying to achieve with all these panels
that you can't do with a few scripts and a couple of hours of geeking.

The only decent panel I've found really is GameCreate, but of course the
incumbent telcos in New Zealand (where I am) and Australia went off and
bought exclusive rights, so that's not an option for me.

For example I keep all my stuff going with some bash scripts I've created
over time plus rsync running on my 'master' server where I maintain my
global settings and these get pulled to each server every 15 minutes. Works
great.

If you need to do things like reboots - SSH keys/rsh is your friend - just
push a command to kill the hlds/srcds process and provided it's in a wrapper
it'll restart itself.

RE: [hlds] HL1 banner

2006-11-10 Thread Scott Pettit
There already is a cvar - sv_allowupload 0

And hell, parents are responsible for their kids - if you don't want your
kids seeing porn sprays, why are they playing an (arguably) violent computer
game? Certainly here, CS is rated R16, which means those under 16 are _not_
allowed to play it, regardless of what their parents may think.
