Unfortuanatly I got hacked too many times using 2003, last one they were
using the UTC port for time sync...

Have gone over to Mandrake 10.1 Final for a new lease of life for a bit.
Dont get me wrong, as a HLDS server all the NT platforms (tried em all over
the last 18months) are very good and the platform is probably easier to find
your way around - maybe I'm just disillusioned? Oh yeh, little tip:
Turn off remote registry services - it's on by default and I lost a Win2k
Server three times before I sussed what was going on - the machine was so
badly invaded they were running an internet radio station on there! - ho hum

Best o'luck ;)

Yes, I do, and it works great. (Please, no renewed OS flame war hlds is
lightweight enough to run fine on any properly equipped NT 4.0, 2000, XP or
2003 box.) Just dont run Exchange, IIS, Active directory, DNS, etc on the
same box, or youll get lag spikes when the other services require CPU
resources

Does this also work on the new css version ? Isnt that only for the old CS
server? My server is running at 256 all the time, just if it runs longer
than
1 day or so it begins to drop 128... 64..?
Kind regards,

Start WMP (Windows Media Player) and run clock.avi in your %systemroot%
(C:\Windows\clock.avi) folder, then you unlock the windows FPS lock.

Minimize the WMP and you got your server running in 512fps...

There is also an FPS bug in CSS on Windows 2003 servers´s that drops the
FPS. So you need to reboot your CSS server once a day.

What a crock. If the client ran on os10 or whatever version of linux you
like it would be just as much of a problem. The root cause here is not the
os, it's the implementation of steams's auth process\design. This is been
hashed through very well and with a great deal of specificity here on this
list by myself, others, and yourself.

Dragging the OS into the issue just polutes the issue is all I was getting
at. When configured properly win2k\3k can be more secured then linux; that's
not my assessment..that's the CIA's assessment. Ok so they don't exactly
have best recent track record..lol but I think you get the point. Anyone
who tries to pin micrsoft as the cause for Valves ineptness with reguard to
this issue is kidding themselves.

Kevin thats the EXACT excuse I have heard being given and to some
extent is entirely correct because it is Windows total lack of
security that allows NO-STEAM to exist and makes it extremely
difficult for anybody, let alone Valve to control what the hell
happens on the client machine, so in that respect it is not Valves
fault.

On the other hand though, knowing all this, and anybody with half a
brain would, why on earth isn't all the checking done server/Valve
side I do not understand.

I do get your point though about MOD versus GAME as a Half-Life user
has legitamate access to most pre HL2 based MODS, BUT!!! it still
should not matter.

A legitamate copy of Half-Life should be on the users machine some way
some how, either with a legitamate CD key or because it was purchased
directly from Valve or as the case usually is CS is purchased directly
from Valve or from a box set with real CD-Keys which then can be
permanently locked to a specific STEAM Account.

In either case Valve knows (or should know) what STEAM Accounts and
therefore which STEAM_ID's have legitamate access to said game(s).

I can confirm that there are errors and/or a severe memory leak with hlds
running on my windows 2000 server box. I have UT2004 running perfectly
smooth for weeks on that box, so I know its not a hardware flaw like bad ram
or something.

After one evening of playing CSS on it with 10 players and stock maps, the
game becomes pretty much unplayable. Pings start going up and up and up. I
have 40 ping to the box ingame.. and it starts lagging like I'm on dialup.
But if I join the UT2004 server on that same box.. It runs fine. If I reboot
the server machine, the CSS instance plays smooth again for a while and then
does the same thing after a couple hours.

Any suggestions how to help this problem other than just "waiting for a fix"
would be welcome.

I had similar Problems with my Server. Im running a Windows 2000

Server with a DUAL CHANNEL Memory configuration. If you getting errors

like : Couldnt write memory to memory adress XY (i dont know the exact

phrase now) then your ram is damaged or your mainboard and your ram

arent really compatible. I just buyed Corsair ValueSelect RAM and my

server runs now like hell !

Alternative download this tool and test your server :

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

You need to run it from a floppy and its great. Just make some

extended passes and you will see if your RAM is the issue !

Happy New Year To All Of You !

But yes the problem still exists and all we can hope is that valve is
working
to fix it... till now all you can do is restarting the server once a day!

[hlds] Dropping FPS on Windows 2003 Server

2004-12-31 Thread dEFiNE
Hello!

In the BETA a few people (me included) reported a problem that the Server
FPS
is dropping if the server runs for a longer time. I reported this problem to
Quicksilver (the Steam Forum Super Moderator) and he could also reproduce
this
problem and said he would forward it to VALVe.

My question now is, is the problem still known and being worked on, as it is
really a pain to restart the Source Server every day to avoid the FPS
dropping
issue.

For everyone who doesnt know what I mean: If you run the srcds server, the
FPS
starts at about 256 FPS. Then if people play some hours on the server and
everyone leaves, the next time a player joins the server, the FPS suddenly
drops by 50% (128 FPS). If you let the server run even longer the next time
it
will drop to 64 (then you already notice client side jerkyness)...! The only
way to get the Server FPS back to 256 is if you restart it.

We already reproduced it with standard config, console and VGUI mode, its
always the same issue (as far as I remember, all machines who reported this
issue were Windows 2003 Server Edition)

Thanks in advance,

DEFiNE
