Re: [hlds] Half-Life 2 Dedicated Server a few questions
I've monitored the connection rates of my server network. Thats over 300 game sessions. The average per player traffic is 2.4KB/s. Some get more. Some get less. The *average* user out there is not fuxing with their rates. They are using the default settings given to them. - Original Message - From: "Whisper ." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2004 10:59 AM Subject: Re: [hlds] Half-Life 2 Dedicated Server a few questions > [ Converted text/html to text/plain ] > > Well thats just great, go and set your rates on your broadband connection to > 2400/2400/20/20 and come back and tell us how great your client experience is! > > Lets just see how much fun that is, and see how competitive you are against > Cablers using 2/1/101/101 not that its all about winning or being > number one, but I myself do not play games to sit in chat dead. > > Furthermore, we can talk theorectical BS all day and night until we are blue > in the face, or we can deal with reality, and if you believe 2.4KB/s is > satisfactory for a good client experience well give me some of them drugs > becaus eI need them! > Original Message Follows > From: "Shane Robinett" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: [hlds] Half-Life 2 Dedicated Server a few questions > Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 10:37:46 -0400 > Why do you assume 3KB/s is not a reasonable about of bandwidth per client > connection? Re: [hlds] Half-Life 2 Dedicated Server a few questions
[ Converted text/html to text/plain ] Well thats just great, go and set your rates on your broadband connection to 2400/2400/20/20 and come back and tell us how great your client experience is! Lets just see how much fun that is, and see how competitive you are against Cablers using 2/1/101/101 not that its all about winning or being number one, but I myself do not play games to sit in chat dead. Furthermore, we can talk theorectical BS all day and night until we are blue in the face, or we can deal with reality, and if you believe 2.4KB/s is satisfactory for a good client experience well give me some of them drugs becaus eI need them! Re: [hlds] Half-Life 2 Dedicated Server a few questions
Why do you assume 3KB/s is not a reasonable about of bandwidth per client connection? It's a bit north of the 2.4KB/s requirement for CS. Why assume that a new engine requires 10x the bandwidth? One hopes that Valve has learned over the years what the people at Battlefield 1942 did not.. that the more bandwidth you use, the less friendly a game is going to be. - - Original Message - From: "Whisper ." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2004 10:22 AM Subject: RE: [hlds] Half-Life 2 Dedicated Server a few questions > [ Converted text/html to text/plain ] > > Mate, it has been 5 years of CS, and still no server manual from Valve > explaining everything from at least a technical server setup standpoint. > > I think we are going back to hunt and peck server setup, and guessing until we > get some reasonable setups out there on the net. > > Seriously, if Gabe wants to stand by his 3KB/s will provide a decent client > expereince as the gospel from Valve, then we are already in the shit. > > I mean if thats the extent of explantion so far of client server > communications and the factors that affect it, then may your god help us all, > cause we are going back to the drawing board, AGAIN!! > > Quite honestly after all these years of Gaming Companies coming out with > mulitplayer online games with absolutely little to no administration functions > or comprehensive documentation, or both tacked on as an after thought, as if > it was at the bottom of the list during the design stages of the game, you > really would have thought they would have wised up by now. RE: [hlds] Half-Life 2 Dedicated Server a few questions
[ Converted text/html to text/plain ] Mate, it has been 5 years of CS, and still no server manual from Valve explaining everything from at least a technical server setup standpoint. I think we are going back to hunt and peck server setup, and guessing until we get some reasonable setups out there on the net. Seriously, if Gabe wants to stand by his 3KB/s will provide a decent client expereince as the gospel from Valve, then we are already in the shit. I mean if thats the extent of explantion so far of client server communications and the factors that affect it, then may your god help us all, cause we are going back to the drawing board, AGAIN!! Quite honestly after all these years of Gaming Companies coming out with mulitplayer online games with absolutely little to no administration functions or comprehensive documentation, or both tacked on as an after thought, as if it was at the bottom of the list during the design stages of the game, you really would have thought they would have wised up by now. But looking at almost every multiplayer online fps, none of them have, and so far, it looks like we as server administrators are condemnd to repeat history yet AGAIN! This is my first post so I hope it will go alright. Here are my questions: - Will there be a Windows Dedicated Server version for the Beta program? - Will there be a 64-bit version for both Linux and Windows? (When Microsoft releases their 64- bit version of Windows Server 2003) - Will you include a decent manual for Half-Life 2: Dedicated Server? (A list of all the command line options and server variables for example) - How much time will there be between the release of Half-Life 2: Dedicated Server and Counter- Strike: Source Beta? Hopefully somebody here can help me out.
