I think I'm just cursed. I upgraded from a GF4 MX440 to a Ti4200 (I've
got the Coolbits sliders all the way to the right, no FSAA, no nothing),
running CS in 800x600 on my AthlonXP 1900+, and I *still* can't keep it
at 100fps no matter what. Yeah, *most* of the time, it doesn't even
drop to 99.9, it stays 100.0 solid. But not all the time. Maps like
cs_office, de_aztec, etc, seem to drag it down at times, looking in the
right direction, to like 70fps, which is distracting when it suddenly
gets a quasi-blurry effect for a second because it's not drawing as fast
as your monitor's refreshing. One smoke won't kill it, either, but two
or more, it gets bogged down. I just talked a computer-noob friend into
and through ditching his broke-ass old Gateway for an AthlonXP 2200+ and
the same exact Ti4200 board as I got. He can stare right through 10
smokes with no slowdown (well, according to him, at least).

Just frustrates me sometimes :)

I think you'd get much better results just using those six computers as
separate machines to run separate game servers.

"Using high speed networks..." -- no inter-computer network currently
existing is as fast (or likely ever will be) as the internal
communications inside a computer between CPUs, cache, memory bus etc.

Cluster computing like this is simply not designed for applications like
HLDS (or any other game server). They're great for parallel computing
tasks, but not serial tasks.

I'd love to be proven wrong (and I admit I don't know a huge amount
about it), but I can't see it happening. Still, good on the guy for
trying, although it seems like a case of more money than sense...

Easy. OpenMOSIX picks up parts of the original thread and spreads into avaliable
processors, asking them to think and send the results back to the caller machine. Using
high speed networks, you have an super computer capable of support thousands of players
with a reduced cost and a really great performance. I just didn' t know that OpenMOSIX
was mature enough to do this, but i thing these guys proven it to me now.

Re: [hlds_linux] CPU Usage?

2002-11-09 Thread Will Brendel
As far as I know the wallhack blocking technology is in the current VAC,
unless is has been removed since November 4th:

*** This only affects Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat servers. ***

We've updated the public security modules again. These security modules
introduce the wallhack prevention methods we've been working on.

We're interested in hearing about any situations where players are invisible
when they shouldn't be. For example, if there's a location on a map where
someone can stand without being seen. You can send the details directly to
me (mailto:erics@;valvesoftware.com).

Your Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat servers should update themselves
automatically. Let me know if you have any problems with these security
modules and we'll look into them right away.

Thanks.

2002-11-09 Thread DLinkOZ
Two things. The P4 is far inferior to the PIII for running hlds. 3 would
be the absolute max for that processor from what I've seen. Also, not sure
what kernel you're running, but I've found the latest RedHat packaged kernel
to be absolutely horrible. I reverted back to 2.4.19-34 or 36, not sure
which it was.

Have you turned off the HLGuard wallhack block feature? Combining that with
the VAC's wallhack block can cause high CPU usage.
