Re: [hlds_linux] [STEAM] Riot Shield

2003-07-10 Thread Daniel Stroven
The sound issue is a definite problem I hear about everytime I am in the
server.

As far as the shield bug..I found out the one I was referring to earlier and
it does work if done properly.

Buy a shield with your knife out..no pistol. close the shield buy and
pistol and it opens. From then on with shield open you still can't be hurt.

Basics again.
buy shield with knife
close shield holding knife
open with gun

2003-07-10 Thread Joshua Gardiner
I don't think that the difference would be noticable between LAN and
internet. I've never tried it though, so I could be way wrong.

On my xp2200 machine, i can have 12+ on my public, 10 on each private (2
privates), and 15 users connected to ventrilo with no issues. I honestly
think you'll be fine with a 2GHZ machine running your servers.

Note how ever this is all done with CS, no DOD. I don't know how itensive
DOD is.. I only run CS servers.

Thanks to all who weighed in. Just to satiate my curiosity, how many users
could connect? Would 12 be able to be on, anyone actually run something
similar? Oh, and Joshua, yes these are those old 5U servers with the hot
swappable SCSI drives on it. Would a LAN server need to be more, less
powerful or the same as one that is connected to the Internet? I would
think perhaps less because if you turn off the Internet (except for VAC)
wouldn't you get less port scans, thus less network utilization?

Thanks again for the advice.

Are these the old enormous proliants? That are like, something around the

I know that most would say this is too slow, but I am hoping this might
work. I have a friend I can get two Compaq Proliant 1600R Dual PII 300
w/160MB ECC memory and Ultra Wide 3 SCSI hdds. I would like to run these
two servers (one DoD and one Cstrike) on my Lan for parties. I have
anywhere from 12-20 clients in and on either or both servers ie. 2 5x5
matches, 1 dod 1 cs. I am aware of the `20-25 mhz rule per player, but if I
bind hlds to just one cpu and the rest (hlguard, statsme) to the other and a
third PC host the php stats, would this work? I thank you in advance for
any advice you can give me. I can get each @$125 w/ shipping incl. Yes I
do realize that I can darn near build a 2 Ghz machine for the same, but two
servers on it? Plus I like the stability of an established server. Oh, and
I plan on pumping the memory up to 512 MB. Thank you very much for your
help.

I'm still waiting for the steam client to update itself so I can play

[hlds_linux] HLTV Banner/Logo

2003-07-10 Thread Tony Di Schino
In searching the hlds_linux list, I find one occurence (about a year
ago) where some one inquired on the location of the hltv.tga and
hltv.wad files (no hits in the win32 archive). the person didn't get an
answer... I don't see these files in any of my folders.

I'm just going to try and drop them in and see what happens. however,
im a little unclear on the difference of these two files.

// hltv.wad contains the HLTV banner and my be different on each proxy
// banner format should be 240x48, 256 colors (same like player logo in
pldecal.wad)
// decalfile "hltv.wad"

// hltv.tga will be shown instead of the default HLTV logo in spectator
GUI
// bannerfile "hltv.tga"

both of these descriptions sound like they could be the file that is
used to display where the default HLTV logo is displayed... which file
do I actually need to display in the spectator gui? it sounds like the
tga file, but then what is the wad file for? it says it is the banner,
and that could also be the logo in the GUI... is there a definitive
source for HLTV info somewhere?

Thx,

Tony

I roll my own rpms from time to time. Box2 is a new install and haven't had

2003-07-10 Thread jeremy
I was taking a look around the RHN and notice something I hadn't seen
before. I can browse a list of every package I have installed on my RH
machines. To my amazement it was right at or over 500 installed packages. I
thought my install was pretty clean. Turns out all kinds of stuff was
installed, just not running. Well I went through them all and got the # of
packages down to 414. Some things I knew could go like httpd and sendmail,
and other I knew had to stay being used for the os itself. Then there were
so many that were on the edge of whether they would be needed by any current
software that has to be there I just left them to be same.

So how many rpm packages does everyone else have installed on their RH HLDS
boxes? Just wondering.

Thanks

I thought I'd just chip in with any information and let you know that I run off of the
same ISP this guy does -- SBC DSL. Via them, yeah, it is very simple to change your ip
and/or subnet, all you have to do is power down your DSL modem and power it back up
and you have a new IP. Guy sure seems like a moron, though. A suggestion is have an
am/mm plugin (write it) that writes a small something to his config and checks if it's
in the config of the user, and if it is, ban that wonid and IP, so long as he doesn't
notice it in his config you'll get him every time.

yeah, I looked on the steam forums, and it seems that there is an easy
exploit to be protected even when your gun is out. so that at least is a
known bug

On that note, is there a reasonable colo host you could recommend? I'm

plagued by wretched Cogent/Yipes connectivity.

I think there are other exploits to the shield myself as well. Ive noticed
that some players (same ones all the time), are able to stop bullets even
when the shield is opened for them to fire. They do not even need to close
the shield in combat. Ive even seen the shield give protection to a player
from behind. Like if you aim for the back and head, it would be deflected
like if you were facing the shield. This does not happen all the time, but
it has enough times for me to notice it. Personally, I think the shield
should either be reduced in its defense or allow the Ts to buy a terrorist
version of the shield. As it stand now, besides any bugs in the shield and
its uses, it it far to much of an advantage.
