RE: [hlds_linux] Message to Alfred Reynolds

2004-02-04 Thread Mike Kercher
Sure...I see. I said it would be nice if it were open source.

The point I'm trying to make is that people complain WAY too much on this
list. I'm sure Alfred and the other developers at Valve get tired of *most*
of the threads here bashing them day in and day out.

People ought to take a moment and put themselves in Vavle's shoes. Would
you go to work every single day and put forth your best effort if all of
your customers beat you down for 9 hours a day. I'd develop a real sour
taste in a hurry! Despite the troubles Valve has had with Steam, at least
they're still putting in the effort to make it better.

you need to convert the time anyhow. may be time zone information should
be added on time relared messages so that ppl would get alert of the
time zone issues.

Seriously, give these people some slack. Software development hits
road bumps sometimes that causes unpredictable amounts of debugging
time. Something like painting a house can be estimated...software
development often cannot.

Give these guys a break. I for one am happy to see any improvements
to the linux binary even if set back a little while.

I simply profiled the server using oprofile (oprofile.sf.net) and got a
couple other people to do the same (on P4's) and then found ways to
remove the most called items from the profile (mainly by refactoring the
algorithms to go from O(n) or O(n^2) to O(1)).

Ok Alfred,

I see where you want to go But, after 3 years of playing and setting servers for
good teams, trust me when i say there is a huge difference between default 50 fps
servers and tweaky ones
I mean, if you need 3 or 4 times to hit the head to be registred as a headshot, no way
of setting a high skill team server.

The reason is not really clear for me, as you said the eyes can't see more than 150 ms
etc ...But here, i'm not talking of refresh for the eyes, but registred bullets on the
hitboxes. Anything lower than 100 fps and there is some "magical bullets" that are
shot right in the head and not registred. In fact, if you don't know it, lots of teams
DO want a precise server, that feel smooth and registred all bullets they shoot

If you got informations about how to handle a precise NET server without being above
100 fps let me know ! i'm intrested !!!

Cheers,

S.Gault

RE: [hlds_linux] SERIOUS windows to linux head on analysis

2004-02-04 Thread Vernon Riley
I have an amd xp 2100 with 512 mb ram in NY that will hold 1x 16slot 1.6
public and 2x 12slot 1.6 private.

Redhat 9, custom compiled kernel. 2.4.20

I could probably do 3 16 slots without any privs on there but that would be
pushing it. Although I do know it will do 2x 16 slot easy.

Subject: [hlds_linux] SERIOUS windows to linux head on analysis

I was wondering if anyone here has done a head on analysis of a windows 2k3
or 2k machine versus a mandrake linux 9.2 or redhat using the 2.4 kernel and
then the 2.6 kernel. The idea would be obviously to recreate exact
conditions as they happened to see which box can handle the highest load.
Both linux kernels would be custom compiled and NOT RUN x-windows to get the
best possible scenario. My honest guess is that mandrake or gentoo, just one
of the linux distros would probably have the highest players on the 2.6
kernel, if using the boot times between the two kernels has an effect on
anything. My question for this is simple, I have a box that I am going to
colo with the specs:
AMD 3000+ 400 mhz fsb
1.5 GB ddr400 pc3200
built in 10/100 ethernet
two 80 gb hard drives raid 0
those are the most important specs I guess, I wanted to know stacking as
many HL servers on it as possible how much I could get. I think it has
already been established on this list AMD performs better. I was hoping to
get 2 18 player servers and 2 26 player servers with this for a total of 88
players and right now I feel i must unfortunately let go of linux. But
before I do I wanted to make sure windows could make it happen. Any non bias
opinions would be helpful, or results from people with similar machines if
you havent tried this experiment yourself.
Thanks
Sriram Prakash
