Well, what good is a firewall box that supports TOS if the upstream
routers throw away the flag?

- Linux: Added "-tos" command line parameter to linux hlds binary. This enables the
LOWDELAY TOS header in the udp/ip packets the server generates.

You forgot to mention that it can be used to prioritize the packets
leaving your network so that bursty web traffic does not cause lag
spikes in game. If you use a Linux firewall you can take advantage of
it. Detailed information in available in the Linux Advanced Routing &

AW: [hlds_linux] HLTV?

2004-02-09 Thread LuZiFeR
Some Bugs are reported here, but here are the probs from me:

- TGA-Picture generates a Error-Message, but not at everyonealthough
i use the right size and type
- One of my HLTV increases his memory-size to 800-1000MB, don't know
why, it's only one out of 7 (they identical, because copied)
- And a bunch of little bugs (chear don't work sometimes, some of the
commands from the HELP don't work...)

Whats the meaning of -tos?

Did the two server run at the same time on the same machine?
If yes, then you should try different ports.

If not, I would like to start compiling one.
Many folks join up, say they have looked in archives

to ask over and over the same questions.
HZ, FPS, HL2 release date, MODS, MAPS, VAC, etc. etc.

Please reply to the list with your favorite

I will assemble these into the first rev of the hlds_linux_faq

If, however there _IS_ a HLDS_LINUX FAQ - where is it?
I have personal archives of the list since 20030712 (MMDD)

Re: [hlds_linux] new cpu usage record?

2004-02-09 Thread zextra
[sorry for digging out this old msg]

errr isnt this hlds_linux mailing list? :) lol

btw, i was getting huge cpu usage on athlon xp 1700, 512ddr, nforce mainboard, gentoo
linux, gentoo-sources kernel package ver 2.4.22. it was compiled with hz=1000, and cpu
usage was about 50% on empty server. when there was about 5-6 ppl, cpu usage was 99%
(!?) and ping was growing with every new player, so with 10 players it was at 80ms for
each client (lan clients). then i did three things. first - compiled gaming-sources
kernel package 2.4.20, using hz=200. second - recompiled NIC module (server was sooo
slow in network operations that i had to do it again, just modified CFLAGS a little),
and third - configured hlds to use sv_maxupdaterate 30 (instead of 101), and
sv_maxrate 2 (instead of 25000). after those changes, hlds server process with 10
lan players used about 20% of cpu. i will see how it goes with 32 players...

REPLIED MSG:

Install windows, and all your cpu usage problems will be over.

hi!

today, i tried to run counter-strike 1.6 on an p4 with 3ghz (512kb
cache), hyperthreading disabled, kernel 2.4.24 with hz=1000.

map de_dust, no players on the server:
CPU InOut Uptime Users FPSPlayers
15.00 0.00 0.00 0 0 249.88 0

with 7 players on the server, cpu usage rises to 99% whereas the fps
drop to 4. what the heck is going on on my server?

best regards,

cw server.
my linux box is running gentoo linux 1.4, gaming-sources kernel compiled (for
non-gentoo users: gaming-sources is kernel package optimized for linux gamers; it
includes some patches, etc..). hardware is as follows: amd athlon xp 1700+, 512mb ddr,
nforce chipset.
cw server cfg file is as specified by cpl rules. so, sv_maxrate is 25000, and
sv_maxupdaterate is 101. but public server runs using sv_maxrate 2 and
sv_maxupdaterate 30. when i look at procesor usage when clanwars server is full, cw
server process uses about 37% of cpu, and public server with 5-6 players (at the same
time) takes 0-1% of cpu power (?!). if cw server is empty, and if there is about 10-12
players playing on public server, that process uses about 20-21% of cpu power (guess
that is because of different server.cfg variables).
server startup cmds:

/hlds_run -game cstrike -maxplayers 32 +map de_nuke -port 27015 -nomaster -insecure
+sv_lan 1 -pingboost 1 -tos
/hlds_run -game cstrike -maxplayers 12 +map de_nuke -port 27015 -nomaster -insecure
+sv_lan 1 -pingboost 1 -tos

please help! tbh, everything is working fine, except great ping in public server
during clanwars.

p.s. sorry for my bad english :/

Re: SV: [hlds_linux] IS there a FAQ for hlds_linux?

2004-02-09 Thread Nelson Marques
About the kernel, there has been a lot of discussion about the KERN_HZ
parameter here, wich shouldnt be a problem if you use Fedora Core or Red
Hat Enterprise Server 3, since both come with a AC tree kernel and the
KERN_HZ is already set to 512 (i686 SMP at least, the only one I
checked), people say 200 is a good value, 512 works phine for me.

If not, I would like to start compiling one.
Many folks join up, say they have looked in archives
(which happen to be inaccessible right now) and seem
to ask over and over the same questions.
HZ, FPS, HL2 release date, MODS, MAPS, VAC, etc. etc.

Please reply to the list with your favorite
Frequently Asked Question(s) and well composed Answer(s).
I will assemble these into the first rev of the hlds_linux_faq

If, however there _IS_ a HLDS_LINUX FAQ - where is it?
I have personal archives of the list since 20030712 (MMDD)
and see no mention of a faq.
Thanks.

[hlds_linux] RE: HLTV

I have been running HLTV on all of my servers for several months now, and I have run
into only 1 issue. That issue being when you use custom .tga banner files, clients
sometimes get an error stating that they have a corrupt .tga file. The work around to
this is to set your allow_downloads to 0. Besides that error, I have had no issues at
all with HLTV .
