I just know that this is a common problem when addons (e.g. Admin
Mod) try to run certain functions on bots, e.g. slapping, showing
messages, playing sounds, etc. That is why Admin Mod has a
bot_protection cvar. If you aren't running any addons, I don't
know what could be causing it. If you are then you should check
what kind of things these addons do with players.

What is that going to do for folks that make a living off game servers?

We run a 26-man CS server. When full, it was using ~15-20% cpu.

Dual amd 2400, 2gig ram.

Yes, I have played with sys_ticrate, however it seems (at least on older
binaries) that it is only effective up to the kernel HZ setting your server
uses. i.e. a hz=100 kernel setting, sys_ticrate 200 does nothing more than
sys_ticrate 100.

So, I leave it at 1 :)

One more shout to the list - is anyone running a 32 player CS setup on
these
new binaries? Can anyone comment on performance when full? This is a
key
issue with us, as our base really likes these packed servers.

Re: [hlds_linux] Major HLDS CS problem

2004-03-03 Thread Jakob andreen

I switched from -pingboost 3, now using 1 which fixed the bug. This kinda sucks tho
since the server isn't that good (6-20 ping, ~850fps) anymore. Ping avrg went up
5-10ms and fps is only ~350 now. I admit that the cpu usage is one third now compared
to before but that I don't care about.:-) I guess this fixed the problem but it's
still a huge bug IMHO. I mean, if you want to boost it maximum (Note: with no third
party programs), then you should be able to do so.

Guess I won't see a fix for this but I really hope, you VALVe ppl out there :-)

When running a 2.6.2+ kernel and -pingboost 3 the sys_ticrate shouldn't
be more than 1000. Had the same problem with my server. Everything just

 [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
I got this major problem with my HLDS running CS. I'll explain it in detail
and I hope you can help me with this, it's very weird and I've never
 seen/heard of it before.

It's a clean CS server with no mods running. The problem is as following,
when you're reloading a weapon it reloads way to fast. When you throw a
grenade, it detonates way to fast, something is running way to fast. This
isn't happening for everyone just a few people but it still makes it
unplayable - I'll explain later why this makes it totally unplayable. Please
note that it isn't the client though, the clients ONLY experience this on my
 server, no where else.

Things I've made to fix it(with no luck): Reinstalled steam completely.

The server is a match server for top sweden clans, Matrix and adrenaline,
even though only the matrix players have experienced the problem, many ppl
around in sweden have experienced it though. The server is as good configured
as it can be so please don't tell me to just lower ticrate or something
similar, it needs to be top class for the players to be happy. I use
-pingboost 3 tho, I don't know if this has boosted the server fps too much
(?!) and caused the weird problem.

I'm using the CPL server.cfg, which includes ticrate 10K and similar.
-pingboost 3 is used as well as I mentioned before.

It's a linux box with a default 2.6.2 kernel, default hz etc. 786MB DDR
memory, 1800+ AMD CPU. The problem was discovered after I installed the 2.6.2
 kernel.

 Start: screen -A -d -m -S matrix1 ./hlds_run -insecure -game cstrike
 +sv_region 3 -pingboost 3 +servercfgfile matrix1.cfg +map de_dust2
 +maxplayers 13

Also, I've seen that when it's full (10 players), it sometimes uses 99.9% of
the CPU. This kinda made me rise my eyebrown but it's ok, if that's what it
needs to be top configured then go ahead. It's mostly at 60-70% CPU usage
though. The server fps is allways between 900-1000 fps.

That would be all, all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading
 this.

Do you yearn to build a safe, secure online worlds where orcs, cowboys,

trust in the game? Do you want to create a more perfect world where the
players advance according to their skill playing the game instead of
their ability to download the latest cheating code? Do you want to stop
cheaters, modders, hackers, and other schemers from ruining the fun?
This book lays out the philosophical and mathematical foundations for
building a strong, safe, and cheater-free virtual world. It explores how
the right equations can let people roll dice, shuffle cards, pay bills,
and trade things like swords without worrying about fakes, frauds,
counterfeits, or tricks. The right decisions in a games architecture

 Any ideas?

Ya, that happens to me all the time...I hate it when I pub, 90% of the

The update release tomorrow will include a new Steam Linux version. It
will have a number of improvements. The tool should update itself
automatically when you run it (after the update is released).
The changes are:

** New command-line syntax **

The old -update game dir username... syntax will still work, so
don't worry.
However, a more powerful syntax was necessary for some new features,
and to prevent common mistakes. With the new syntax, each parameter is
explicitly listed (instead of assuming they are all in the correct
order). For instance:
steam -command update -game cstrike -password mypassword -username
user ... etc
You can run steam -? to get the full syntax list.

** New -verify_all flag **

If you run an update command with -verify_all, it will check that
each file in the install matches the latest Steam version. If,
somehow, your installation gets corrupted and will not run properly,
this should bring it back to working order.
** Resume download feature**

Previously, if the tool lost connection to the Steam servers in the
middle of an update, the next time you ran it, it would re-download
some of the files it got the last time. This should be fixed now, it
will pick up where it left off.

Any ideas?
This is s known issue and not the fault of AMX/Statsme. Look in your
client console. You will see a bunch of output and at the buttom
something that says:

[hlds_linux] Re: steam update - Broken Server :(

2004-03-03 Thread Jay Carter
After the update, my server is not starting. Has anyone else experienced
this? The server starts up, looks like everything is working fine but
doesn't show up on HLSW and doesn't accept console commands.

This is with Metamod and all addons removed, just vanilla HLDS and Cstrike.

Try sv_lan 1, if it is usefull to you, or wait for steam to be back up.

What does it say in the logs?? Maybe it requires the steam master type
server thingies to be up :)

it stops with the new ones. Probably waiting for something from the net :)

RE: [hlds_linux] Is the steam client ever going to work properly?

You are correct. This has been an 'ongoing beta test' and still is and will
probable continue to be.

it seems valve does not have the proper equipment, nor resources to manage a
user base so large.

to me the steam beta never ended. this all seems like a beta test to me.
there is not ever been 1 update that went smooth, every single update since
steam was suppose to be out of beta has been a nightmare. I guess this is
valve's standard in saying something is working when it's not.

Maybe it doesn't help that before the update there was 4Gb/s available
bandwidth on the content servers, and now there is only 2.2Gb/s available
(and 2.3Gb/s used!!). I think valve should publish a white paper on 'valve
logic.' It seems to defy everything we've come to believe, and this new
logic NEEDS to be recognised, as it seems pretty standard!

You'd think valve would have implemented some type of 'baby sitting'
