I would go for the most cache, and in my opinion for game servers 512KB should be a 
minimum. There are some P4 models with 1MB that you can get for not much more. I just 
priced a DELL P4 2.8Ghz with 1MB cache, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD for $1,008.

I would go for a 1MB cache processor if it were me or for an AMD setup I'd use Dual 
Athlon MP 2800+ Barton core (512KB cache). It wouldn't hurt to get a blazing fast SATA 
hard drive either and cheaper prices than SCSI. Check out the 10,000 RPM 74GB drive 
from Western Digital http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=65

So to answer your question, do not settle for less than 512KB of cache.

Im trying to find out if anyone else is having issues since the last patch,
many of our servers are showing problems with a big lag spike every 10min or
so
this spike has a few smaller spikes then one lasting for approx 5 sec where
everything freezes.
the server then returns to normal, it isn't cpu causing it because it is
fine
it is happing more on our larger servers.
