Whle you're planning on doing that, you might want to double-check your
system clock, which appears to be exactly 2 years behind (reading

up the timestamps.

I bought a supermicro case that came with hot swappable sata drive

raid controller was necessary, but the finished product was pretty
sweet. Raid 5 with a hot spare.

You don't buy "hot swappable drives". You configure the appropriate
RAID array to allow for hot swapping in the even of a drive failure.
It's a feature, not a thing. As Matt also mentioned you need the right
hardware to accomodate this. Removable hard drive trays and a
controller card that support hot swapping.

RE: [hlds_linux] Server Hardware

2005-02-22 Thread admin
I have used gentoo for almost 2 years on my dual mp2200 and I must say it kicks
ass! I did a whole stage 1 install on the box and for the linux geek its a
great choice. Word to the wise : this is not a distro for newbies! You must
compile EVERYTHING if you do a stage 1 install. You boot off the cd - do all
the bootstrapping etc and chroot into the install to finish it up. It took me
from about noon till 2am to finish compiling.

For the linux newbie pretty much any flavor will do - Fedora/Debian/Redhat
being my preferred installs.

Thats my 2 cents on Gentoo tho. Everything is custom compiled for the box your
installing it on.

Hi,

most of others distros use precompiled packages (with predefined
compilation options/optimizations).

gentoo gives you the possibilty (obligation?) to choose the compilation
options/optimizations for (almost) every single package.

since hlds is precompiled, the impact is limited to libraries.

but the main reason i switched from debian to gentoo, is that i love
gentoo system administration methods.
i never saw a linux as easy :)

now you put in it a linux distribution (say, gentoo because it rocks :)
and you get a really fast enough box for at least 2 cs:s servers.
we use 2 gs10, 1 gs12, 1 gx21 and 2 gx28, all from tyan.
they are all good to simply amazing (specially the gx28 with 2 opteron
246 and 4gb ram :)
i hope i could help you ;)

HP ProLiant DL360 G3 - Rack - 1 x Xeon 2.8 GHz - RAM 512 MB - HD 2 x
36.4 GB - CD - LAN EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN - Monitor : none - 1 U -

rt arrowâ2 x 36.4 GB - hot swap - Ultra SCSI HDD
rt arrowâ512MB (installed) / 8GB (max) - DDR SDRAM
Two questions: Is this suitable for a gaming server? Roughly how many
games or slots would this be suitable for? Someone on the windows list
already mentioned a 20--slot server takes between 50-120MB of RAM
depending on the map. Is Linux similar? Or better/
I plan on adding at least another 512mb of ram.
Thanks for any help.

hello,
considering www.ldlc.com:
- 885.25â tyan transport gs12 box
- 182.01â intel pentium4E 'prescott' 3.0GHz
- 150.24â 2x corsair value ddr400 512mb
- 102.80â 2x hitachi 80go sata 7200rpm
it gives: 1320.30â (~ Â 915 i think)
