Re: [hlds_linux] installing hldsupdatetool.bin on OpenSuSE 10.1

2006-12-06 Thread TwoEyedHuman

As root,
*ln -s /usr/bin/gunzip /usr/bin/uncompress*

If you plan on running unix servers, I highly recommend reading some
kind of 700 page linux manual on security.

At least I did. Not only that, but read more books too. You may have a
long way to go from windows to being a competent linux system admin.

I'm still working toward that goal too! There's a lot of stuff to know!

hey guys. i've recently started a company with a friend serving source

i'm trying to get my head around the linux version of hldsupdatetool.

I've used the windows version for my own personal amusement for many
years until the last update that included the new
cl_restrict_server_commands cvar and because of this i stopped playing
and hosting servers for my friends as i could not see how the CS:S could
be played in a competitive manner if the server admins had no control
over how their connections and system resources were used as well as the
fact if you are one of those ppl that thinks it's a great idea to cheat
there is nothing much us admins can do about it.

But that's politics and i'm here for some help so i can get paid.

I've run the bin file as root in /home/[username]/hlserver/ i got the
license and typed yes i then got this:

sh: uncompress: command not found

it then left me back at the bash prompt. I've had a look in yast for
rpm's called uncompress but all i got was some audio lib called gavl and
an app called tnef (for uncompressing ms-tnef files) although as i'm
writing this i think that might be what i'm looking for. can anyone confirm?

Once i get passed the installation i should be able to get by on my own
but we'll see what happens.

Cheers guys in advance i know there isn't that many of us linux guys
knocking about so lets keep the spirit of the open source community
alive in here.

This is one of All-Seeing Eye's scanner systems (part of their server browser
thing) prodding your server to see if its alive.

dig -x 68.142.232.33

shows it as scan2.ase.games.re2.yahoo.com.

Back in the CS Betas, I could run a 16 player server on a AMD k6. Try

It's nothing new, it royally sucks but unfortunately that's how the

[hlds_linux] High system load with CS Source server

2006-12-06 Thread Ronny Schedel

Hello,

we have a root server with Intel E6600, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, 100 MBit internet
link and Debian Sarge with kernel 2.6.19 installed. We have the following
servers running:

Core 1: 20 players CS 1.6, 20 players CS:Source
Core 2: 20 players CS 1.6, 24 players DOD:Source, 2 HLTV

Both Source servers are running with 10 slot SourceTV. We have applied the
settings to the kernel described here:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=486424

All servers are running fine, except the CS Source server. If the CPU load
increases above 90%, something strange happens: the CS Source server starts
to generate alot of system load.

Example:

Core 1:
20 player CS 1.6 CPU Load: 50%
20 player CS Source CPU Load: 30% + 20% System load

The swap space is never used, it always remains at 20 KByte swap use. When
the system load increases, the CS Source server starts to lag, but not the
CS 1.6 server.

When this happens, I switch the CS Source server to core 2 and the full 24
player DOD Source server to core 1 and the DOD Source server does not lag,
and it does not increase the system load! The CPU load for both is 95-100%
and the system load stays at 0-1%, no lags.

Both Source servers have the same server configuration, I used diff to check
differences in the cvarlists, both are the same. Both have the same engine
but have a different behaviour at higher CPU load. But why? And what causes
the high system load in the CS Source server?

Best regards
Ronny Schedel

Re: [hlds_linux] Redirect - is it going to work anymore ?

2006-12-06 Thread john @ GamersCoalition

LDuke-

Don't forget, this thread is named "Redirects" not "reserves..."

We use reserves and redirects. People who pay for the hosting of the
server are given reserve slots. Those people without reserves that
were disconnected (before the update) were redirected to another one
of our servers. If they didn't want to be redirected, they could
purchase a reserve, which in turn, goes to our hosted server bill.

As it stands now, we can still disconnect people who aren't paying for
the server to make room for an "investor." In reality, that's good
enough, but it would still be nice to redirect that person to another
one of our servers.

To me, allowing a server admin the ability to redirect a player is far
less threatening than giving a server admin the ability to set the
clients rates, etc.

But whatever, we got a crate of lemons, time to go make some lemonade.

cl_restrict_server_commands blocks redirects which is probably a good thing.
I can't think of a single time I'd want to be redirected as a client.

It doesn't change reserver slots. Mani and other admin plugins can still
implement reserverd slots and kick players that need to be kicked.

Hiya, I'm guessing if you want to do multiple words as the command you maybe
need to quote them like...

screen -S hl_27501 -X -p0 eval "stuff 'changelevel de_dust'^m" //the
addition of the ' ' if its hard to see, can't test it here properly atm.

I found that 26900 needed to be open too for VAC to work, though this

look it up on portforward.com. even gives you the instructions for the
router setup. but if you ffeling lazy it's 1200, 27000:27015, and
27020:27039 and set it up to allow both tcp and udp packets for all the
ranges (sorry for the long wait for a reply been busy with my installation)

Re: [hlds_linux] Rcon commands via bash scripts

2006-12-06 Thread Dave "M3pH!sT0pL3s" Williams
look it up on portforward.com. even gives you the instructions for the
router setup. but if you ffeling lazy it's 1200, 27000:27015, and
27020:27039 and set it up to allow both tcp and udp packets for all the
ranges (sorry for the long wait for a reply been busy with my installation)

RE: [hlds_linux] Rcon commands via bash scripts

2006-12-06 Thread Andreas Kang Schøyen
Now I find the screen, it looks ok, but the commands wont show on the server,
for instance, I have tried:

screen -S hl_27023 -X -p0 eval "stuff changelevel de_dust2^m"

New line come, but the server wont changemap.. :)

Hiya, don't use screen names that are numbers only :).

use hl_27015 or something, otherwise I'm guessing its looking for the pid.

Re: [hlds_linux] installing hldsupdatetool.bin on OpenSuSE 10.1

2006-12-06 Thread Dave \"M3pH!sT0pL3s\" Williams
cheers guys. it's installing as we speak. FYI there is no ncompress
package for suse but sym linking gunzip works a treat. Just to save some
time i was wondering if there are any comments anyone would like to make
about any differences or eccentricities between the windows and linux
versions. From reading the rcon thread over the last hour it seems like
the linux version is extremely powerful more so than it's windows brother.

Thoughts and comments welcomed and thanks again

Hiya, don't use screen names that are numbers only :).

use hl_27015 or something, otherwise I'm guessing its looking for the pid.

RE: [hlds_linux] Rcon commands via bash scripts

2006-12-06 Thread Andreas Kang Schøyen
I am using multiple screens, so I should look like this;?

#!/usr/bin/expect -f
set timeout 1
spawn /usr/bin/screen -d -r -S
match_max 10
send -- "rcon say \"You have only one hour left\"\r"
expect eof

where do I put the -r ?

With:

set usethis [lindex $argv 0]
send -- "rcon kick $usethis\r"

you may even use commandline parameters to.

One more thing; I assume that you run only one screen session and force it to
detach if already attached. You can always identify proper one by spawning
screen using -S unique_name and reattaching it -r unique_name

Re: [hlds_linux] installing hldsupdatetool.bin on OpenSuSE 10.1

2006-12-06 Thread Saint K.

You need to search for the packet called "ncompress", i done a quick search
on RPM find, but its not there for Suse, so perhaps you can find it in the
YAST db.

Subject: [hlds_linux] installing hldsupdatetool.bin on OpenSuSE 10.1

hey guys. i've recently started a company with a friend serving source
based games. We are still in the very early stages of the concept and
i'm trying to get my head around the linux version of hldsupdatetool.

I've had a look in yast for
rpm's called uncompress but all i got was some audio lib called gavl and
an app called tnef (for uncompressing ms-tnef files) although as i'm
writing this i think that might be what i'm looking for. can anyone
confirm?

Once i get passed the installation i should be able to get by on my own
but we'll see what happens.

Cheers guys in advance i know there isn't that many of us linux guys
knocking about so lets keep the spirit of the open source community
alive in here.

Dave

Your description sounds like a change to the entity properties for the
door.
You can use a program like EntEd or EntSpy to edit the entities in a map
or
add new ones (that aren't brush based). If you save the changes, only
the
server needs the new version of the map. The CRC check doesn't include
the
entity setup. This is the method I used to add chickens back into
cs_italy,
so I know that it works.
I don't know what property on a door you could change to fix it, but if
there is one this method should work.

Hiya, assuming something like screen -Sdm hl_server1 ./hlds_run to

screen -S hl_server1 -X -p0 eval "stuff status^m"(basically status is

[hlds_linux] installing hldsupdatetool.bin on OpenSuSE 10.1

2006-12-06 Thread David Williams
hey guys. i've recently started a company with a friend serving source
based games. We are still in the very early stages of the concept and
i'm trying to get my head around the linux version of hldsupdatetool.

Dave

Are you able to use "screen" for the process? If so you could just send a
message via screen to the console (saves having to worry about rcon
code/issues).

Btw, alternately I think there may be some php rcon classes, but don't have
a link at hand.

[hlds_linux] Rcon commands via bash scripts

2006-12-06 Thread Andreas Kang Schøyen
Hello!

Is there a way to send rcon commands to the server with a bash script?

I want to sendt rcon kommands from my web page, by using a php script that
calls a bash script on my unix boks.?

And by the way, version : 1.0.0.32/7 2949 insecure (secure mode enabled,
disconnected from Steam3) this is a problem om all of my servers.. steam still
not secure?

Valve have the perfect opportunity to take the lead on this as
they have the delivery mechanism which will allow them to
adapt over time easily.

Hopefully they will harvest this advantage and take this step to
"level" the playing field providing the gamers with a solid
platform.

I kinda agree with this, most of the pro ut2k4 clans we have set theirs up
at 40 even.

Whatever, I personally would trade a clamped 66tick (i.e by the engine) than
having a whole host of servers set at 33, 66, 75, 100 etc, of which some
can't handle as well for most other settings, and some having bugs etc.
Never understood why not simply have one "decent" setting where everyone
knows where they stand, and gets used to a specific standard. Every server
they then join is set the same, this has always been key for me when playing
games, especially when its not obvious whats what when you join. I can see
the problem with larger servers etc, but I can't believe there isn't a
decent solution.

I think more and more, we'll see games just with one standard server
settings (network wise etc, not talking about modes, and gameplay vars), and
less and less client settings (but still be able to configure via menu etc).
Personally would like to see Valve take this road, but its pretty unlikely
:).

Source games are crap, end of story.

I run my DOD 1.3 server at 1000 sys_ticrate (fedora) and it has unreal
accurate hitreg and smooth as silk play.
CSS is really nice because its a direct port but its not so nice thats its
worth all of the troubles of running a Source server. none of the source
mods are.then you combine all of the lame Steam updates like the most
recent one with the cl_restric cvar and I just have to wonder why anyone
even runs a source server at all. SOURCE ='s one big headache after
another. but im still bitter the dod dev team lied and told us DODS would
be a direct port.Oh well...

No offense, but this is wrong imo.

I think you are confusing bandwidth caps and updates/sec.

However I do agree that higher tick helps improve the feel of the game,
but only to a point. At some point it starts to hurt things because the
server and the player's latency cannot keep up, making higher tickrates
useless.

Interpolation.

Also, it only has to interpolate 5ms of extra positional delta, which is
pretty small.

I would more likely call it psychological self-imposed setting.

FYI, in UT2004 the top players feel that 50-60 tickrate is totally
adequate and anything more is overkill and will only hurt server
performance by taxing the system or internet connection.
