Re: [hlds_linux] HLDS crash (5408)

2011-12-22 Thread Frank
I'm still seeing that tf2 items line failure to load etc on a server
restart...and again I've seen several if not half a server of mine have
clients crashing which to me says its something from the server. This hasn't
happened until the recent big Xmas updatesomething is causing these
issues as of last week.

Was there a recent update? Sometimes I find my server failing an update but
trying to start anyways - getting stuck in a crash loop. Try to re-update
and worst case scenario do a -verify_all just to make sense.

Does this happen with plugins installed? According to the crash error
(something about cannot connect to server, never saw that one) it doesn't
look like it would be the root problem but it's something to consider none
the less.

Re: [hlds_linux] Question for more experienced admins

2011-12-22 Thread doc
This is where votekicks/bans work well. If I cannot tell someone is hacking
but I've gotten enough "reputable complaints" then I will just start a
banvote, but only ban for 2 or 3 days. If they ARE aimbotting then they
probably will just assume they've been banned for ever and won't be coming
back. in the rare case they aren't aimbotting however they might come bak
and ask wtf is going on, which then you just admit what happened and state
why you banned them - for suspicion of aimbotting. As long as you're
transparent about your actions most people don't worry about being
banned/kicked - either they like your server enough to rejoin when needed
or they will never come back, and in that case you can just assume they
were a random pub - and int he long haul of the game now being F2P you
shouldn't worry about losing one or two people.

It's difficult to say without seeing a demo ourselves.

It's the Xmas holidays, kids are off school et al, perhaps that's why
you're seeing more cheaters than usual.

I tend not to expect to see a really skilled player playing on the same
server as me. Statistically speaking it's unlikely. Firstly skilled
players tend to play with and against other skilled players - they
aren't randomly distributed across the servers. Secondly, even if they
were randomly distributed, you probably wouldn't expect there to be
enough of them for 1 per server.

So whilst it certainly is not impossible, it's very improbable the
world's best player happened to join the same server as me.
That said, there are different degrees of ability. I regularly get
accused of cheating. This isn't because I'm particularly good or skilled
at TF2 though, it's because they are particularly bad at it. So you have
to be very wary of false reports from people who can't play who decide
that if they are killed a few times by the same player, or if they
struggle to kill someone, it must be down to cheating.

If someone appeared as though they were the world's best player on my
server (in terms of score + ability) then I might think "hmm, they are
cheating" - but I think I'm safe statistically from banning a skilled
player and if I'm wrong, well, what's he doing on my server in the first
place?

Most cheaters won't look skilled though. They might get a lot of hits or
headshots, but the way they play will look average, like everyone else.
That's usually what I look for. Movement is perhaps the biggest
difference between skilled and not. Moreso than aim.

Because it's rare a truly skilled player will be good at aiming by
itself and completely hopeless or average at other aspects of the game.
Whereas that's almost a certainty with someone using an aimbot. Some
classes that will be more apparent than others.

After I've banned someone, I tend to google the steam id. Most cheats
are banned somewhere else (or at least accused of it) and there's
usually a forum thread somewhere to that end.

Quite often cheaters will act out an immature role of being brilliant in
chat. It's like they want to get caught or at least they want people to
recognise their "skill"
You mentioned silent ones though, so you can't tell from that. Here in
the UK/EU I expect many people connecting to my server not to speak
English, so I wouldn't read much into them not replying to chat.

I noticed a couple on my server when I switched to cp_foundry the other
day. Which I suppose is a lot in the same day, because I'd only banned a
couple of people up to that point over several months.

There is at least 1-2 cheaters detected per day with DBlocker (

useless, they just create a new steam account every time.

Re: [hlds_linux] Question for more experienced admins

2011-12-22 Thread Mike Johansen
I myself haven't experienced an aimbotter for a few months, not since I
installed SMAC (SourceMod Anti-Cheat) and enabled aimbot protection in it.
It does give a few false positives, but it has maybe banned one innocent
player per 20 confirmed aimbotters. Which I find acceptable.

The last week or two I have seen a sharp uptick in the number of aimbot
reports come in. Most often, they involve a spy using either the enforcer or
the ambassador and a dead ringer.

I try to take such accusations seriously, so I have spectated these players
and I have seen a few I would swear are legit complaints.
Usually involving: consistent shots across large map spaces, against scouts
(headshots even), while jumping themselves. Most of them do not respond to
speech or chat, so I end up simply banning them to keep the other players
from revolting.

Anybody else seen this kind of trouble? Or have I simply been hit with a
rash of really really good spy players lately who don't like to talk.

Thanks
-Andrew

Well, thanks for the heads up on the fix for the client.

No, this update is not required for servers. There are no changes as far as

We've released client updates for CS:S and DoD:S to fix the in-game overview
maps. Some shared files were updated so the server binaries were also updated,
but there aren't actually any changes on the server side of things.

[hlds_linux] Question for more experienced admins

2011-12-22 Thread Andrew
The last week or two I have seen a sharp uptick in the number of
aimbot reports come in. Most often, they involve a spy using either
the enforcer or the ambassador and a dead ringer.

I try to take such accusations seriously, so I have spectated these
players and I have seen a few I would swear are legit complaints.
Usually involving: consistent shots across large map spaces, against
scouts (headshots even), while jumping themselves. Most of them do not
respond to speech or chat, so I end up simply banning them to keep the
other players from revolting.

Anybody else seen this kind of trouble? Or have I simply been hit with
a rash of really really good spy players lately who don't like to
talk.

Thanks
-Andrew
