Tried running the server without SourceMod and still had the same
issue. Time for a clean install..

Re: [hlds_linux] OS

2012-07-09 Thread Ook
Because it works and I don't have the time (read: too lazy) to move to
and configure a native linux ftp server. I've used bpftp for many years,
and this is one of the few cases where a usable gui really comes in
handy - when they created bpftp, they did a bang up job on the gui, and
since it works fine with wine I'm not motivated to move it to linux
native anytime soon. I may take it down - I don't really use it anymore
and all I get these days is google bots and sarcaxxo scans.

OP4 under Linux tends to eat cpu if you have a slower machine, but now
I'm using a 4 core machine and have cpu to spare for what I'm doing.

I seem to be getting lazy in my old ageten years ago I was running
my OP4 server on a 450MHz PIII? That sounds about right, or maybe it
was the newer 800MHz machine. Not a lot of horsepower to spare, not much
memory, and you have to anguish over anything that even thinks of eating
memory or cpu. Today, phht, who cares, so what if we max out a core or
two, we have a couple more that we weren't hardly using anyhow, and we
can always slap in another GB of ram...

Totally. If you're writing server plugins, Linux is the way to go. Linux
performance has gotten better, but still hasn't come to par with Windows.
Or so is the case with SRCDS, I haven't run goldsrc in a 'official'
capacity for a couple years now.

Thanks,
Kyle.

Ubuntu 10.4, since I've been told it is what Valve uses (so probably less
likely to break) using XFCE for the desktop environment. Recently moved to
it after Windows was no longer an option, no problems to report so far, but
honestly the server has never been stressed or used for anything other than
testing simple scripts.

I think the general opinion has been that goldsource and source have
slightly better performance on Windows. That being said, I'm getting
significant return on my "free" investment in Debian boxes.

Gentoo is nice, but to me all the work in customizing the kernel and
reading/learning about the kernel... It's good to do when you want to
learn about Linux, but I want my box to run without issue all the
time, and Gentoo just requires you to know "too much" about what
you're doing, IMO. I'd rather just stand the kernel up and move on.
The little extra performance I'm going to squeeze out with Gentoo
isn't worth my time (especially since game servers just cost me money
to run!)

That sounds exactly the same as my "crashes" I'm having on Multiplay (they
might not actually be crashes and more long freezes now that I think of it,
and I also get the steamauth kicks sometimes). I also suffered the same
issue on an older TF2 server which I ran on a Xen VPS - until about a week
ago - the entire VPS froze for anywhere between 10 seconds and a few
minutes, and when it stopped freezing htop showed the CPU usage of TF2
through the roof, with load averages going above 10. Players with a high
enough cl_timeout would remain connected.

The old server was using the most recent stable version of SourceMod;
whereas the new one is using a 1.5.0 dev build.

Perhaps it could be a dodgy plugin that we both use - however I doubt it.

Your server crashes might be related as I have noticed some random
crashes as well. However, the issue I'm asking about is where the
server doesn't crash. I am having an issue where srcds is taking up
100% utilization of a core for a duration in the range of a fraction of
a second to nearly 10 seconds, at which point the server recovers.
Everyone in game locks in place until the CPU usage stabilizes.

For longer spikes players will get disconnected and these show up as
STEAMAUTH errors in the logs.

also confirm that CPU levels spike before the server crashes.

Running sourcemod 1.5.0, one of the nightly releases- whichever Multiplay

I have replay running on a local instance of nginx because of the
remote replay server issues. I also have jobs set to clear out those

Has anyone else recently run into the issue of massive CPU spikes? I have
been getting complaints of lag from my users recently and when
investigating the cause I spotted that the main srcds thread is randomly
spiking to 100% usage in the middle of matches which is causing lag spikes
for all players in game. Sometimes they last a fraction of a second,
sometimes several seconds. This has only been an issue since the latest
update.

I've tried different versions of SourceMod: the latest 1.5 snapshots,
1.4.4 stable, 1.4.5 snapshots, as well as the latest SDKHooks snapshots
and disabling SDKHooks entirely. I haven't tried disabling SM outright
yet, as that is always the last resort. I'm curious if anyone else is
running into this or if it's just me.

My server host, Multiplay, has told me that the latest update has broken
Sourcemod quite a bit, and lots of servers - including mine - have been
crashing a lot recently. I'm not sure if CPU spikes are to blame because as
a customer I don't have access to that kind of info., but the issue
definitely sounds similar.

Re: [hlds_linux] OS

Slackware 13.37 64 bit with the 3.3.7 kernel. Rock solid. Gets the job
done. Not really for the linux newbies, as it doesn't do much
hand-holding. Slackware is a basic distro without a lot of gui bells and
whistles. I used to use Windows 2000, but got tired of the regular BSODs
everytime I passed gas or a flock of cosmic rays blew by. Replaced
Win2000 with linux, hasn't gone down once. Even the X server is
surprisingly stable, the current version of xfce is lean and bloat free
and more important, very stable.

I run xfce because I use bpftp for my ftp server, and it is a windows
program. Works great via wine. Everything else I've converted from their
Windows equivalents to native linux apps. 3GB on the box, two OP4
servers, one minecraft server, one ftp server via wine, apache, noip,
and it's currently using 1.5GB and 5% cpu (older Phenom four core cpu,
one of the slower ones).

Re: [hlds_linux] OS

2012-07-09 Thread doc
I use Gentoo, I guess it's good but fuck if you're not into linux then
you're going to balk the first time you have to start using -USE flags what
the fuck man. I can't wait to mess it up enough to finally give myself the
motivation to go to Ubuntu.

You're using hl2sdk-ob-valve rather than hl2sdk-ob, right?

[hlds_linux] Problem launching with custom vphysics

2012-07-09 Thread Matthew McNamara
I'm trying to compile a custom vphysics module for Linux & Mac, and while
everything compiles and runs fine under OS X, srcds_linux has been giving
me errors every step of the way.
It's a community rewrite of vphysics based on Bullet rather than Havok, the
code is available here: https://github.com/Jcw87/Gmod-vphysics

Currently I'm getting this error when starting the server for tf or gmod:
"System (MDLCache004) failed during stage CONNECTION"
And in case it helps, I'm using GCC 4.6, Bullet 2.80 and the updated OB SDK
from AlliedMods.

Re: [hlds_linux] OS

2012-07-09 Thread edman747
I run a few copies of hlds on the following x32 VMs
Debian 6
Ubuntu 11.04
CentOS 5
Fedora 14
SUSE 11.4

Plus, two other computers with 12-15 copies of hlds running under
Debian 6 x86_64
I like Debian 6 the best for anything from configuring an Ethernet
interface to installing a development environment and compiling a
half-life mod, qstat, etc.
