Re: [hlds_linux] Instability after latest update?

2012-12-20 Thread Bjorn Wielens
I'm not running TF2Items.

I've removed all but the basic sourcemod plugins and haven't had a crash since
(knock on wood) but watching top I still see the occasional spike to 100% cpu
usage and the server stops responding until it goes back down.

I'm getting 100% cpu usage hangs on non-MVM servers, nothing in the logs that

My servers just started crashing left and right, with the following message.
They've been running fine for two hours (since the update), but now I can't
start them. They're all on FreeBSD 9, but on different hardware and
connections, both with and without SourceMod.

[hlds_linux] Potential SMAC issue

2012-12-20 Thread Weasel
Thanks for the head's-up!
Disabling SMAC temporarily on my servers.
They are all busy trying to update right now anyway, so good time to move the
plugins to disabled for now.

Re: [hlds_linux] Mandatory TF2, DoD:S, and HL2:DM updates released

2012-12-20 Thread Nicholas Hastings
For the moment, you'll need a new MM:S snapshot from either the stable
or dev branch. We'll be making an actual release in the next day or two.

It's recommended to also grab a dev snapshot of SM, especially for TF2,
but most (not all) functionality with be fine without on DOD:S/HL2DM.

If this is still an issue, it must be Linux only, as Windows servers
only freeze momentarily if they lose connection to an FTP server goes
down (and then display the "Server has stopped recording replays"
message to all clients.

The TF2 market is a free market economy. Valve doesn't and can't
control what people trade to each other for what.

If people are being suckered by the TF2 Spreadsheet, that's their own
problem. Most traders know to avoid the TF2 Spreadsheet and even take
prices posted on Backpack.tf with a grain of salt.

I kept my silence about this subject so far, but since you keep
bringing it up...

It looks like you started servers specifically to have servers that
"are better than" server X without having a community built-up around
it first. To put it bluntly, that's a poor way to start a community.
At my previous community and my current one, we built the community
first and then created our game server(s). Not surprisingly, it's a
lot easier to fund servers when you have a core group of players who
are willing to commit money so they can have fun. (Side note: My
community funded our only server for a

[hlds_linux] Some Complaints To Valve and to Us in General

2012-12-20 Thread Cameron Munroe

As of the recent update I have been seeing a few problems, and
frankly you are the only one that can fix them. (they were working fine
until you updated it.)

-- As of the recent update(s) I am getting
massive lag spikes on some of my servers, if not a group of them. I have
checked the server with the most problems and it is happily running
along at 0.00 load. I have updated the server to the most recent
updates, restarted servers, and fully reboot the actual box to no avail.
I am thinking it is just something that got loose again in the code.

--
Steam Servers, I still see on occasion days where the Steam Servers that
my servers connect to for items, VAC, etc. Keep having issues. After
looking more and more into the issue, I can only fully come to the
conclusion that you are the only one who can fix such an issue. As it
seems either you restarted the server, or it had a problem. This is a
massive annoyance to players as suddenly they all bring up rumors to fix
the issue, mostly to no avail. If people are paying to buy your keys to
open your mannco creates, then at least give them a proper item system
so that they can actually where the stuff that they have opened.

Now
this is to an issue that never has been fixed.

-- When I started
http://www.gaming-servers.net/ I had all my servers running with
replays. People loved it, and were constantly downloading replays of
there favorite moments. However, after more and more replays couldn't
actually be made into physical movies due to crashes I shut them down.
The other reason for the shutdown was because if you ran a remote FTP
for replays, and that FTP server had a hiccup, then BOOM your server
crashed. Not only is this a horrible thing, but it made servers useless
if an outage happened anywhere along the path to the FTP server. So can
I please ask that you patch this issue by either soft turning off
replays, or maybe caching the files on the local server until the FTP
session can be reestablished. I would love to re-enable replays, but
that is what is holding me back.

-- The market. Yeah, the TF2 market is
a mess with bogus price lists http://tf2spreadsheet.blogspot.com/
namely. It is rather upsetting that the TF2 team has done little to
mitigate this scamming center, or at least played it off, by calling it
a scam. It edits the values to the owners wishes and has NO actual proof
on prices. I have even looked through the massive list of Steam APIs and
I can't find a single reference to current trade prices, what has been
traded for what... etc. It is absolutely sad that you, the TF2 Team,
have let your product become into a black market. The more and more I
look, and the more and more I just get fed up with trading. So I ask,
why don't you do something about it? Why don't you make an api so we can
actually get a list of the most recent 100 trades? Why don't you make an
API to tell us what a reasonable price is? Why don't you throw
http://tf2spreadsheet.blogspot.com/ off the cliff, from what they
massively deserve? It just simply is so sad, I guess I just take better
care of my works then you because I want to be proud of them.

On a side
note about Pizza and Pinion in General.

-- I am not happy at all about
the new system. I don't, and never have wanted to force my players to
watch an ad, but someone has to pay for the servers. When I started
http://www.gaming-servers.net/ I had the goal of not having the faults
of lotusclan. Namely abusive donators. I have preached about this
before, yet people still don't get the fact that I don't want to have
http://www.nighteam.com/ donator rights where you pretty much have to
get Prem. to play. Not to mention I cater to what the rest of you all
throw out, Kids. Yes they have no money, but don't they deserve a place
to have fun as well? Do we get hissy fits, yes, but that fully comes
with a gaming server no matter where you are. So this was really my only
means of actually making a substantial dent in the cost to run my
servers. I was proud of what pinion initially was, but yes it is slowly
fading. However, thankfully they have given us the option of hiding the
MOTD with people who have a certain CVAR. This can be used perfectly to
remove ads for players who care, and those who don't have the money. In
the end it is a win win.

Now to you Pizza, I know you may think
everything is back in 2007, when TF2 didn't have scammers, or trading,
and wasn't free to play, but that game is long gone, someone has to move
with the time. You may claim that my servers are horrid, yet they are
full on a 24/7 basis in most cases. I would send you a list of my
gametracker results, but sadly I had to recently move a bunch of my
servers, to get the best for my players and I think if they keep coming
back, then so what. Does it really matter so much that they had to watch
30 seconds of an ad? Probably not considering they usually play for over
2 hours.

So please don't be a TF2 Nazi and claim that only donator is
allowed, as it isn't.
