Re: [hlds_linux] Linux Source Dedicated Server Beta Available

Which options in the kernel can be changed to fix the hitches?

i don't know exactly.

i wrote some emails to mike in the last weeks and the latest email from
him was:

Alfred mentioned to me that the newer Linux kernel has some changes to
the scheduler that might be screwing us. I forget the name of the
feature (something like dynamic timeslicing), but he mentioned that if
you disable that it might fix the hitches. I've CC'd Alfred in case you
need to ask him about it.

so i asked back on that day. but i didn't get an answer to this.
all i know is: there aren't any mid-round hitches with kernel 2.6.8-11
or lower. so there must be something valve changed in the june 12th
update that doesn't work with newer kernels...

i really don't want to recompile the kernel just to solve those

We'd like to make it a public release, but would prefer to hear about
potential issues BEFORE we do that.

Re: [hlds_linux] steam client not connecting

my notebook couldn't connect, too.

easy fix for this:
- delete ClientRegistry.blob in steam folder

the next time you start steam, it will update itself.
after that it asks you again for your password and that's it ;)

i changed net_queue_flush_interval to different values but this didn't
seem to make any difference.

and i added -NoQueuedPacketThread (server console said something about
Found -NotQueuedPacketThread~) but this didn't help either. same lags,
no improvements, sorry...

This is our top priority bug right now. We have a repro for the idle
bug
but not this lag-like-hell bug, although I think they're related.
We're
running tests and will fix this as soon as we can.

In the meantime, if people who are seeing this problem want to try
some
things and send some results, it would help:

1. Set net_queue_trace to 581304 and notice if/when the engine starts
spewing - threaded queued packet sent messages.

2. Play with different values of net_queue_flush_interval. The default
value is 1. Try 5.

3. Add -NoQueuedPacketThread to your command line. The engine will say
Found -NoQueuedPacketThread so you'll know it's doing the right
thing.
Note that if you use this on the command line, then net_queue_trace
and
net_queue_flush_interval won't be used.

You tell us, we could reliably reproduce the high CPU problem once we

The

you're not alone with this problem. this is probably the most discussed

maybe i'm already ignored by alfred for bugging him?
but it can't be too hard to say we're working on it to calm down the

hi all,

maybe i'm opening a new thread on things already under discussion, but
i'm new to the mailing list...so, sorry.

since the latest 2 updates, we have quite awful lags at round
end/start
*and* also during a round - so, this sounds quite equal to what ics
wrote.

we have a very famous german 52 slot server with strong internet
connection. we had no problems for months...up to now. CPU and memory
usage is fine.

i've taken a screenshot illustrating the problem during round start:
http://theke.sachsenkneipe.de/gaps.jpg

there are big gaps were no packets are transmitted. we have
net_queue_flush_interval 0 and net_queued_packet_thread 0 - with
the
default settings the lag is worse.

are there any solutions? or at least things we could test to isolate
the
problem?

our machine:
- AMD64 3700+
- debian, latest stable
- kernel: 2.6.18-4-amd64 #1 SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux

plz let me know, if we could help or if you need more details.

greetings from germany,
karumba

we also updated to the latest beta a few hours ago.
net_quued_packet_thread 0 is no longer required, works perfectly with 1
now.

but something's still bugging me: people still talk about lags during

the strange part about this: lags _only_ occur while dead or in spec

during gameplay, lags don't happen any more.
what's wrong with this? i don't get it...

does anyone else have this behavoir?

Yeah ,installed on fedora core. I had the problem with start round lag,
now its running without lag at roundstart with net_queued_packet_thread
1, now its only laging a bit whet a player joins, leaves game and when a
player is changing team. But its much more better than before :)

hi back,

this is update related, your hardware should be ok.
we suffer from the same bug for some days now, too.

as far as i can tell, this happens on these conditions:

- server is linux

- has custom maps running
- (maybe more things like mattie eventscripts?)

it had nothing to do with the vac2 breakdown.
i'm sure alfred and/or the other valve staff is currently into this ;)

does anyone experience the same and is there any solution/workaround?

We have deployed a fix on our backend servers for this problem, your
server should automatically reconnect when it changes level. If it does
not then restarting the server should fix the problem. There is no
client update needed for this fix.

This makes the lag even worse for the server at hand.
If i set this 0 on another server, it brings round start lag and 2
seconds are gone instantly from the timer before round starts. If i
set
this to back 1, lag is gone on the other server.

[hlds_linux] huge lags with latest update - help appreciated!

2007-06-13 Thread Alex / ch4os

hi guys,

since the latest steam cs:s update our server has to deal with a huge
performance decrease.

short description:

- we're running GunGame on a linux based dedicated server. all plugins
are updated.
- since latest update we get lags during gameplay all the time.
- after each round, players freeze for about 5-8 seconds before gameplay
continues.
- spectating with srctv shows, that the game is actually continuing, but
the players freeze on round end.

i already contacted other gungame admins, all dealing with the same
problem, and tried to figure out what's causing this. it seems that this
is only happening if following things are true:

- server runs with more than 14 players
- server is running with a custom map (default maps seem to work)
- eventscripts is running a famous mod like gungame (also happens with
other mods as far as i can tell)

is valve already aware of this? i hardly find any postings in the
steamforums relating to this problem.

any help is highly appreciated. we just don't want to lose any players
:(

alex aka ch4os
