Re: [hlds_linux] "Temporary" Quickplay changes ... 8 months later

2014-10-24 Thread D3vilfish
I had presumed it had just been the impact of BF, COD etc and console
conversions that people weren't playing on community servers as much, as ICS
and others the drop of players makes it harder to offer a gaming community.
Maybe we should all just convert to online casino's for the $
I thought clients didn't care about communities anymore but it would appear
tobe Valve.

After the quickplay change, my 4x24 servers turned from full to 1 full a
day, excluding the halloween. Just because that extra quickplay traffic was
cut off, that filled the rest of the empty slots. All i wanted was to offer
place to play on but it looks like i'm losing most of my interest after 9
years to continue doing this.

But it seems it's pointless to fight against the windmill to keep this
conversation up.

Hi
Im running several servers with debian 6 and noticed that it takes looong
time before the tf2 servers now are ready and starts to listen on its
game-port.
This is only on one machine, the other are working as they use to .. i
think.
Can it be some updated software that I missed ?

My Linux TF2 Beta servers still crash on start, and have since

Seeing as how there are only 7 Beta servers online, and none of them are
official Valve servers, I'm guessing this problem is widespread.

Re: [hlds_linux] l4d2 steamgroups (yes again)

2011-03-24 Thread D3vilfish - Simiancage.org
I have also asked in the past that we are able to set a password in the

Subject: [hlds_linux] l4d2 steamgroups (yes again)

So,

It is not improving its getting worse, we have our own steamgroups and
whenever someone wants to play a game for l4d2 its filled with servers that
are not ours.
Yes, it depends on which steamgroups you are in, for instance I only have my
own steamgroups and nothing extra but still I see servers that are not mine.

Since somebody decided to allow l4d2 servers to be assigned to multiple
steamgroup id's it really started to explode.

Perhaps now that your busy (valve) with the new campaign for l4d2, you could
install something that prevents this "riding on the success of others"
server abusers.
Maybe a special code in your steamgroup, that you set in l4d2 or something
else as simple as that... (or for starters, only allow 1 steamgroup or at
least minimize it)

I think that most people on the list can understand the effort one has put
into its own community to just see somebody else take advantage of it *is
wrong*
This is in my opinion the same as those tf2 servers that had redirects in it
and false players (I am sure some still exist, but you all know what I mean)

Thanks for listening,
  Eric

That _appears_ to be a TCP (not udp) packet (almost all "game packets"
are udp). The only TCP traffic is for RCON (tho that tends to
be on 27015 and not 27115). Maybe you want to do the opposite for this
port, lock it down so no-one has access, and then add rules for the
IPs you do want access to RCON (this will not interrupt "normal" server
access, but just restrict from where RCON connections can be made)

We had this with pl_cranetop_b8 (custom map) every other map has been fine.
There was a big tf2_beta update a few days ago and I can only guess some
things have been merged down to TF2 which maybe causing this to happen.
BTW is anyone else running TF2 beta as MM seems to now be totally fubared on
beta.
I pointed this out on AM forums but as its beta they are not willing to fix
MM for beta until the problem arrives in TF2.
It could all get bumpy over the next month is all I can say!

Is this a DOS attack, steam failure, or something else? I haven't lost

5 crashes so far today, random (but mostly full servers) also doesn't
matter if its windows or linux, they both crash now and then.

2010-10-09 Thread D3vilfish - Simiancage.org
Iv'e reinstalled latest versions of MM 1.9 & SM snap 1.4. Unloaded DAF &
Dfens and so far server seems stable.
Iptables should cover most rcon & dos attacks but I do prefer running any
security possible. If this fixes my current stability I will test Daf &
Defens to see if they where the problem.

With these kind of crashes, it's best to just run gdb in a screen
attached to SRCDS. That way if it crashes you're ready to debug, or
generate a core dump rather then sit there with your *thumb up your
bumb* watching Valve get a useless coredump that is probably unrelated
to the game entirely.

Just another one of my workarounds for the latest wave of regressions. :/

Latest version seems to be ok (15e I believe off the top of my head), we had
the same, we do however have the assertion fail crash atm which lists a shed
load of files including certain sourcemod files, I have now updated to the
latest snap of 1.4 dev and seems tobe better.
Sorry for slightly off topic.

I am in more than one Steam group, and all those Steam-Group servers are
showing on the scrolling list. I had a similar problem before, and I was
informed by Steam Support:

So you question my admin abilities about a client side problem, the only
reason I asked was because I was already posting about CSS (I am in more
than 1 steamgroup (client side) and none are showing, basicly there is no
steamgroup scrolling list in game) this is not a server side problem, we
have been running L4D2 servers since the release and they are fine.
I was just after some validation from other l4d2 players.

Are you sure you're using sv_steamgroup 1234? 1234 being "Group ID",
from http://steamcommunity.com/groups/GROUPNAME/edit - "ID: $numbers".
You must be a group admin to get this number, and you should keep it
private. If you are doing this, it's a client-side problem, so you
should ask SPUF or Steam Support.

I agree with Steven and I would even add:
All the last update on CSS for example are taking in account bug fix
requirements from the community to make this game better.
I don't know many games that are that old that keep being updated. The
release time have also improved, we even received a warning that a new
version would be comming and even if it was a bit delayed we event got
an ETA of the release.

Come on Valve, make Steven's Dream come true :)

Anyway, we use to shout when something we don't like happen, like
linux missing file, screwed update, and so... but it's also important
to post when you appreciate their work and effort.

This update went well, timing was pretty good, we had an ETA of the
release and that's really not bad. Good job guys, as a GSP admin, I
appreciate this a lot ! :)

Marc.

One thing does come to mind tho, I also have my gaming rig water cooled on
the cpu and gpu and with multi core support enabled I have a markable
increase in heat on the gpu from 33 to 36 Celsius. So maybe its just the
badly ventilated pc's stuffed up with dust that are being affected, with the
gpu getting its legs stretched and the ventilation clogged maybe the gpu is
throttling back to preserve the hardware?

First of all, do not mess with your game. Remove all configs, fps_screwups
and other configs, used with old CSS. Then try again.
protocol 7 and protocol 15 have lots of changes and outdated fps_tweaks do

Re: [hlds_linux] CSS weapon upgrades

2010-07-15 Thread D3vilfish - Simiancage.org
If he has a quad core and he only gets 20 fps then he has a seriously fubard
pc. My pc is 12 months old, quad intel with ati 4800 series gfx and I still
get 200+ fps with vsync off, but then again I keep my PC clean and tidy
don't install crap that bloats it and always use the windows update drivers
not the latest from ati/nvidia.
Seriously backup his data and re install. People are too quick to blame the
software of the game before they realise that all the crap they install on
their pc just kills the game.
A gaming pc should be for gaming not home media centre, small business
office and general porn downloads. Buy a laptop for that shizz.

[hlds_linux] CSS weapon upgrades

2010-07-15 Thread D3vilfish - Simiancage.org
Sorry for off topic for srcds but just throwing it out there as an idea.
Do you think valve will bring in weapon upgrades like tf2 style for css.
This could be an opt in/out for server admins so clan wars stay strictly on
a level playing field but casual/public gaming could have a whole new lease
of life.
After the engy update we had a big drop in player count on css so maybe it
would put a bit of spark back in the game.
Before you all scream "No don't do it" As I said if this is a opt in/out
system I think it could convert alot of tf2 players back into source which
have since been lost.
Just a thought!

So, does the namechange "exploit" mean the "setinfo name newname" command?

2010-07-02 Thread D3vilfish - Simiancage.org
Updating the kernel shouldn't be a major issue and most probably will work
in your favour for stability and processing speed{take that with a pinch of
salt}
A quick google finds this >
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/suse-linux-help/28728-how-patch-kernel.html
Obviously you will have to reboot the server so do it in quite server time
but hopefully you will be in a win win situation.
You may also want to check all your libs are upto date I do know valve
brought in some min reqs a while back but that shouldn't be a problem if the
issue has only just started.

My server runs an old version of Linux - Suse 9.0, kernel v2.4.21, 64 bit
mode, circa 2004.
The latest HLDS update tool gets the corresponding "steam" program (v39) and
it only segfaults.
I have been able to run prior to this but have not updated in a while (36
maybe).
I tried all the tricks about deleting the blob files in the ~/.steam
directory and even the directory itself, but to no avail.

Is there a minimum kernel level that the Orange Box version requires to run
now? Up to this point, I have really had no reason to update my OS.
Besides updating kernel & OS, any other suggestions?

How about if somebody specs below the belt line.

Im glad we allow freedom of speach on our servers. Send me your ban

defends the rights of freedom of speach.

We try to be forgiving as possible with those that have borderline names
hence a rename is sufficient, those with racist or downright disgusting
names are banned permanently on site.
On a side note it does make you wonder what goes through their heads to
advertise themselves with such names.

 - Removed an exploit that allowed people to change their names to something
other than their Steam profile name.

Does this now mean that Server Admins will not be able to change players
names that are abusive or racist?
We have noticed since CSS went O/B that all rename plugins are broken and I
presume TF2 aswell now.
Simiancage run family friendly servers, we have a no swearing policy and
abuse that includes dodgy names is not tolerated.
I can see our ban list growing at a alarming rate.

Re: [hlds_linux] srcds rate settings

2010-06-24 Thread D3vilfish - Simiancage.org
Sorry double post from win32 meant to put this on Linux listing as I've
always ran nix servers.

As a community we derive from back in the days of cs1.2/3/4/5.
When Source first came to our doors we embraced and shunned it at the same
time, we all loved cs1.x but knew source was the way forwards.
So here we are source gone OB, love it or hate it, it's the way forwards.
Lots will argue the 66 tick rule, the numerous faults and god knows what
else but you know after 6 years of running and playing servers im quite
happy css finaly made OB.
It carries Valves support for hopefully plugging holes in what was a dated
engine.
This brings me to one observation that I have seen since CSS going OB.
We run our servers as secure as possible, file perms set to a diff user,
pure list kept tight and whatever sm/mm plugins are available to keep the
servers safe. We have a good group of active admins with experience to clock
dodgy players BUT Since last night we have seen a huge amount of players
join then disconnect, maybe they have bad ping, maybe they don't like that
pure list disabling skins but I have the feeling that nobody realised how
many hackers there were out there.
We used to ban maybe 2 to 5 players a day with the old engine over 3 servers
with dodgy/obvious hacks.
Today we have banned 1 in 24hrs.
I know they will eventually script there sad lives back into cheating but
for now it's just a slice of heaven.
So for the first time in my life I commend valve on bringing CSS up to date
and making it a viable game that will have more attention the same as TF2 &
L4D2.
As for gaming as a client I'm now 37 and past my sell by date for all these
younguns that have lightening quick reactions.

Re: [hlds_linux] srcds rate settings

2010-06-24 Thread D3vilfish - Simiancage.org
Everybody I've spoken to so far has the same fps as pre OB, I currently get
with vsync off and multi core support on anywhere between 250 to 650 fps my
stress test was 381.33fps on a 4890gfx with win7.
Anyone getting less than playable fps should be looking at a new pc tbh
imho.
As for bandwidth I think we all agree rate hacking is worst than wall
hacking, why people join servers that they have a bad ping/connection to is
their own fault!

If you are a rude admin that does not care that many people need to
adjust their netsettings to their fps/bandwidth yes.
If you take in count that the client fps are lower with orangebox and
you need to give the users same space to adjust:

sv_minrate 15000
sv_maxrate 4
sv_maxupdaterate 66
sv_minupdaterate 40
sv_maxcmdrate 66
sv_mincmdrate 35

Re: [hlds_linux] Counter-strike Source Orangebox Update

2010-06-24 Thread D3vilfish - Simiancage.org
Create a file autoexec.cfg in the cstrike/cfg folder and put this in it

Alias altabfix "record bugfix; wait 15; stop"
bind "F9" "altabfix"

Change F9 to what ever or leave it bound to F9 to use that key.
Don't think wait command will work now but doesn't matter, it fixes a lot of
problems in TF2 as well.

That issue is caused by ALT TABbing and is already very known in the OB
Engine. You can fix it by using a bind to "record a;stop".

After numerous servers appearing in our steam group a while back, I thought

Valve could fix this with a simple code/password added to the steamgroup
edit page(that only the admin can see and not published to the public) and
games server config, as long as the 2 match then the server will be listed
in that steamgroup ingame.

Sourceop do a similar validation with their steamids for tf2items.

We have already been over this. Anyone can find the group ID. People
have found L4D2's game group ID and added it to every player in that
groups sees their servers. It almost makes the feature useless since
there will be 20 servers before the ones you want to see.

I'm getting a massive update when I update our tf2 servers, but no version
change on restart. Looks like its downloading some hl2 client files again?

It's downloading a lot of files in /hl2/sound/

And now it says "Thanks for your interest. We've filled the available

What is the point of releasing beta which is available only for a couple
hours?
I'm still downloading a server but it is useless now since there are quite a
few players in our community who managed to grab the client - it is late

ICS,

No I'm not new, I've been actively reading this list daily for about 2-3
years now.

Yes, this list is for server operators, no this list is not about trunk
versions of plugins that are released by third parties on a different site
with a completely different form of support (irc, forums, and wiki).

Since SourceMod does NOT work with its stable version on L4D2, it is
beneficial to ask the SourceMod team, since the data they will get from the
questions or users will be helpful.

This is hlds_linux, not hlds_linux + mod support for third party mods and
svn code.

If you generalize all the topics, then nothing will ever be on topic. It
might as well be the steampowered forums.

Are you people new around here on this list? This is for server
operators and everything that is in those servers. Since plugins are
supported, there is no reason why talk about them wouldn't be allowed
here includign someone asking help. While he may find better help from
sourcemod forums, someone here might also be helping.

No need to be rude to one another.

A new record, 6kb/s.. valve really should learn from this and preload
servers.. or a heads up, normally Jason would send out a mail saying a
update was about to come (that would have helped some too)

Just a little side note to my last post also create a empty server.cfg ( I
forget why I done this but there was a reason at the time) and a base
install of sourcemod in its default locations with minimal plugins loaded
otherwise it won't load the sourcemod engine.

[hlds_linux] Master server listing.

2010-03-02 Thread D3vilfish - Simiancage.org
The current Issue with our TF2 servers dropping off the Master server
listing is killing our servers.
Will there be a fix for this in the near future or should we start croning
quit commands to restart the servers.
What were servers filling up by midday will currently stay empty until
restarted.
This is obviously nix box centos 5.2, setting a heart beat on cron has no
effect.
Any advice on this or a eta from Valve would be good.

Have sv_gametypes "versus" set in commandline and config and ssh console
reports:-

 sv_gametypes
 "sv_gametypes" = "versus" ( def. "" )
game - Allowable game types, usually set on server launch command line.

Yet it still starts in coop and can't be changed if set to exclusive :( D3v

Re: [hlds_linux] Team Fortress 2 Update Available

2009-09-03 Thread D3vilfish
I for one as a server admin and long time clan/community player from pre
valve cstrike disagree with the concept of achievement/idle servers, for
those that think it's great to get unlocks by nefarious means to me suggest
a lack of personal morals. Why are people so hell bent on gaining unlocks
when they are in time there if they just play the game which is all Valve is
trying to keep. Gains made by any other means in my mind is one step down
from using cheats in game and I have no pity for those that have lost items
for using the above methods. I'm sure it will not deter certain communities
on striving to buck the system so I shall carry on regardless knowing my own
morals stay intact.
The only comment I have that I think has made TF2 unplayable for myself at
the moment is how over powered the scout is currently, maybe Valve have a
future plan on this or just that the tests they have done don't collate to
real world environment, hopefully this is something that will be addressed
in the near future.
It is only a game
& it is supposed to be fun!

Lo0l Valve don't need to fix anything, that you have time drift on your
server and use ntp to correct it is your problem not valves. Either disable

Re: [hlds_linux] Lotus.clan

2009-06-07 Thread D3vilfish
Your disillusion of yourself obviously shows with your first statement.
As pointed out by members on that thread filling a server with fake clients
1. May get you delisted
2. Doesn't give a good experience for the end user.
Hence why you FAIL.
Then lets look at your next comment about top ranked clan servers!
How exactly do you think they be came top ranked, was it through word and
mouth of running good servers and building a community to support the
players so they enjoy playing there?
NO they con players on to there servers showing servers virtually full even
when there virtually empty. Unfortunately so many unsuspecting publics join
and make a snow ball effect, as we've all pointed out before if a server
only has 2 or 20 players on it at least when someone random joins they know
that.
Hence why servers listing fake connections to populate there servers are
also FAIL.
The affect that this has on the genuine games community is 2 fold.
1. Random publics are enticed onto substandard servers and don't join good
community servers.
2. The publics then have a bad gaming experience which generally will change
there point of view of said game in a negative way.

Someone pointed out what does this have to do with running servers, this has
everything to-do with running servers. This has to-do with running good
servers to meet the needs of the end user because that is how real player
bases & communities are built unlike the con artists of XXL & Lotus!

Im an average guy I work hard for a living and ive been running our games
community as a interest for over 5 years which we started with as a
cs1.2/3/4/5/6 clan and slowly built up from there, its like being shafted
every time I turn the pc on to see these idiots abusing the gaming community
in general.
Peace to all genuine admins let the rest rot in hell!

Lotus is awesome. I'm awesome and you clearly suck :D.

There's a bunch of servers with fake players that aren't delisted. Remember
there's a public fake player plugin that hasn't been broken. Anyone is free
to use it:
https://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=74304

Go around joining some of the top ranked servers run by random clams and
type in "meta list" in console and you'll see.

Q clans official statement was that they quit while on top but it seems to
most that due to Q clan having server/steam issues that it fell inline with
valves test on delisting, lets also not forget the money they made by
deception and miss use of valve software would be enough for valve to slap a
law suit on them and take them for everything they had and some!

[hlds_linux] Lotus.clan

2009-06-06 Thread D3vilfish

Isn't it time that like Q clan valve stepped in and sorted out lotus clan.
Using tactics to fill there servers with fake connections is never going to
give the client end user a good gaming experience. Joining a server 25/32
and finding nobody is actually on the server is exactly what the delisting
was all about yet Lotus bypassed the whole rating showing there actual
servers with real connections in all valve/3rd party browsers desktop, in
game, hlsw.
There servers performance isn't particularly good there website is a mess
and all there doing is conning money from end users for so called popular
servers.

Re: [hlds_linux] Team Fortress 2 Update Available

2009-05-22 Thread D3vilfish
I played for roughly 8 hours got 3 new unlocks and 2 duplicates, as posted
already these will be tradable in the future.
One thing I am not is frustrated, my wife makes sure of that ;).
There are some adults here that still consider it was wrong for good players
to grind achievement servers just so they had all the unlocks within a
matter of hours to gain advantage over the average Joe public.
To put it in context:- You own and drive a very good 4*4 if you had to drive
from A to B you would use the roads provided by your countries government,
what you would not do however is drive cross countryside fields just to get
there quicker.

Not sure if you quite understand why so many are frustrated. Players don't
need to randomly get items they already have. It's becoming quite a chore
to constantly remove them from the backpack. I, myself, have played for
over 5 hours since release and have not seen 1 new unlock.
But, I have received plenty of other items. Sure, this method will be great
for all of the new players during this free TF2 Memorial weekend, but I'll
be one of the frustrated players that see free new players getting the
unlocks long before I get them.

Gratz on your Ambassador though. I'm sure that you'll enjoy having all 10
of them eventually. Too bad you can't duel wield anything.

Running 4 tf2 servers today Ive seen plenty of people get spy & sniper
unlocks.
I personally love my Ambassadors gun its one huge cannon.!
Many are complaining about the new unlock system but I bet the majority of
them have all been on achievement servers. Now they will just have to sit
back play the game and wait for the unlocks.

Re: [hlds_linux] Server Ranking

2009-04-08 Thread D3vilfish
I agree whole heartedly, especially with lotus.clan and there 25 fake
connections as can be seen by this screen grab.
http://devilfish.t35.com/lotus.clan.jpg
Filling a server in this way doesn't give the client a good gaming
experience yet does fill there servers, I have highlighted the only
information that I believe to be the SM plugin that they use to create these
25 fake connections sm_ps_version 0.3.
Hopefully valve will look into the lotus.clan like they did with the Q.clan
and manually remove them too.
As a Server administrator with over 5 years of experience I find people like
this almost as frustrating as it must be for the clients that join such
servers.

Their current system will obviously clear out a lot of the garbage redirect
servers, but I think they'll need to plink a few of the higher profile
servers which lie about player counts in order to get the point across
that they are serious about the users experience. Some of these
servers have been lying for such a long time, they've amassed enough
regulars
where they score above valves threshold, which sucks for everyone because
their regulars would play anyways, and the newer players still get the
crappy join -> huge difference in claimed vs real players -> quit
frustrated.

As someone said before there is a lot of 'racing to the bottom' between
servers operators, and as long as they see that places like Lotus Clan
can get away with it, people are going to continue trying to do it.

Maybe Valve is planning on another wave of master server list drops
right before the sniper update to teach them all a lesson =)

I am very happy that they did wipe out a lot of the spamtastic fake servers
though. Kudos for that.
