RE: [hlds_linux] HLDS CS 1.5 or 1.6

2003-11-23 Thread Marco Balle
We have some Dual AMD MP Systems. Every system has already a 2.6 kernel.
Sure I can also run much more than 72 slots on the Xeons, but not with the
HalfLife linux gameserver (bf / mohaa / ... works).
Yes, we can run on the Amd MPs a few slots more (compared on CPU speed with
Xeon), but not enough. Compare this with windows servers and you will see,
you have much more CPU usage on every linux systems.
I suggest you to read some benchmarks about Amd MP and Intel Xeon CPUs.

If you cant run 50 slots on a dual xeon 2.66ghz then your problem is not
with valve although they do suck. The problem is you and your server.

Next time spend your money on a real company like AMD. Intel is for fan
boys who like to ride the bandwagon. AMD crushes Intel in all benchmarks
with much lower clock speeds bottom __

Sell your Dual Intel and get a dual AMD. Next Install slackware 9.1 and
recompile with 2.6 kernel. After that you should be able to handle up 72
 slots

Thanks, fort he really fast update for this problem.

Is there also an update in work for the high CPU usage problem with linux
servers?

Subject: [hlds_linux] Steam update: engine binaries

We have released an updated dedicated server engine binary. This update
fixes the exploit published by SYZo[SND] (release on Wednesday). The
update also contains a fix for kick messages not being displayed in the
 UI properly.

This release is not mandatory so you will need to manually update at
 your convenience.

A full changelog can be viewed at:
 http://www.steampowered.com/platform/update_history/Linux%20Dedicated%20
 Server.html

A fix for 3.1.1.1 (WON) is in progress, for now make sure you set
 sv_allowdownload 0 on your 3.1.1.1 (WON) servers.

RE: [hlds_linux] Opteron and Xeon Server Comparison

2003-11-18 Thread Marco Balle
Since CS1.6 we have really bad performance on our dual Xeon's.
We can only host three 16Slot CS servers on a dual Xeon 2,66GHZ @533 HT /
2GB DDR PC266 / U320 SCSI. More than 50 players, the ping goes up, more than
60 players, lags on all servers [Kernel 2.6.0-test9].
Hope Alfred will do anything in the next time, to fix this.

For Opteron cpu's, there are no 64bit plugin bins, I think.

You better stay with your P4's (one of our P4 2,66GHz can handle two 16Slots
CS Servers) - that's much better than the dual Xeons, but it is worse
enough, cause it can handle many more slots mohaa (q3 engine).

Subject: [hlds_linux] Opteron and Xeon Server Comparison

 Hi Guys,

We're thinking of replacing our current Pentium 4 2.66GHz server with
 either
 a Dual Xeon 2.66GHz, or a dual AMD Opteron 240 (1.4GHz). I've been trying
 to
search for reviews that have pit the low-end Opterons with the mid-range
Xeons, but I've not been able to find anything useful.

At present the cost of a dual Xeon server is very close to that of a low-
 end
dual Opteron, and I'd just like to ask if anybody has had any success with
running the 64-bit HLDS binaries. Which chip runs better?

One little gripe would be that we're still running a few CS1.5 servers as
well, but planning ahead and looking a little into the future we're
seriously considering that the Opteron has something to offer in the long
 run.

Anybody with real-world results that could help me to make a decision?

 Regards,

 Christopher Choo

RE: [hlds_linux] When is WON going offline??

2003-11-17 Thread Marco Balle
What is your problem? You have 1.6 and 1.5 CS servers and nobody is playing
on it and now you want a fast shutdown of the WON servers?
Sorry, I don't understand this...

Subject: [hlds_linux] When is WON going offline??

 Hey..

Has anyone heard anything official re the turning off of the WON servers??

Since STEAM/CS 1.6 has hit my gaming farm has lost a lot of players. I
 did
what I thought was best and upgraded to the new platform a few days after
the release when I was happy with the stability of the server. Many
 players
just haven't or won't upgrade to 1.6, many of them flocking to the CS 1.5
 servers still running.

I have even tried dropping a few servers back to 1.5 to try and keep the
players. Too late, the players have moved on to other servers, so now my
servers sit empty, regardless of wether they are running 1.5 or 1.6.

I am hoping that the WON servers will be shutdown in the near future,
effectively forcing everyone to be playing 1 version of the game. Initial
rumours heard mused that it would be done within about 2 weeks of the
release of Steam and cs 1.6. Obviously it has been longer than that
 already.

 Alfred, can you comment?

 mentasm.
