There is no "solution" you cheap bastard. Either you own/rent/lease the box
or you don't. If you do then you run it on the main OS install. If you
don't
then you take your cheap-bastard complaints to the steampowered forums.

IMHO...running a latency-sensitive program in a virual machine is perfect
stupidity. You ask for someone to fix a problem that you created. Run the
game server from the main Win2k3 install and then seek support.

Though I am tempted, I will not ask why anyone would configure a server
in such a way.

From your description, it sounds like the virtual server software is
dropping packets. I would suggest using a tool like Etheral to monitor
the traffic and see if the system is getting retransmits.

Why not run the server directly on the Windows server. Or in a virtual
windows environment? Your current configuration is just asking for hard
to resolve problems to occur.

[hlds_linux] Linux on virutal server

2005-06-24 Thread Michael Webber

Hello. Please read this carefully it is a very confusing situation. I own
a game server hosting company and this one server is really starting to be a
problem. Its a 20 man dod server on an amd64 processor that isnt using an
amd 64 bit kernel (linux).

The box is a Windows 2003 install, with virtual server running the linux
"server" inside of that.

The problem is the server will run fine for ever, you can play in it you can
do everything, but randomly it will time out on the game server list built
into steam, and my hlsw. But the people that were playing it it continue to
play just fine. Just no one can find the server. It doesnt have to have
people in it to time out.

If I start the server before I go to bed, and then when I wake up look for
server on list it will be there. But then 15 mins later it will be down
and wont ever come back.

Once in a while I go into console while its timed out to the server
browswers, and change maps. It comes back on server list for 5 - 10 mins
(its random) and then goes back into timeout.

I tried starting it witn -binary ./hlds_amd and ./hlds_i686 still times
out randomly.
I tried addins some setmasters to no help. I even put the setmasters add in
autoexec.cfg

I really need some help here. Is it the windows box doing some dos attack
protection? (like its being pinged to much on that port and shutting it
down?)

Wow while I Was typing this email the sever started responsing to hlsw and
steam server locator. I wanted to see if it restarted so I typed stats and
it has been up for 805 mins, so it must have been an auto map change.
Yeah its back down again. :0(

Its a stock 2003 install, and I know its not a problem with the hlds install
becuase I did to installs. One fresh ./steam -update install and one I
coppied from another working dod server of mine.

Please help me with any information you can thanks so much.

[hlds_linux] amd 64 good bad?

2005-03-03 Thread Michael Webber

Hi all, I was wondering if anybody knows if amd 64 processors work well for
hlds? I need to know how many DOD 20 mans and AMD 64 2.2 can do. (with
unlimited bandwidth and such)
So based on the processor alone, how man FULL 20 man DOD servers could it
run? Thanks
Please only reply if you know from EXP or have benchmarks.

yes it would give a very big performance boost. Would also let very high

On my server, we have rock solid ~20ms pings. I have no idea what you're
doing different, but I haven't seen any lag issues, even with 20 players
on the server. Hell, we played hl2mp with 16 players with very few
problems too.
Are you maybe maxing out the cpu? Do you have your network card set to
full duplex? What's your kernel timer frequency set to? (check
include/asm/param.h in your kernel source tree).
No matter what.. I can't see it being a netcode issue, to be honest.

Hopefully no offense to Alfred, but my personal opinion is the the netcode
in Source is horrible. CSS looks great. On a LAN server by myself its
smooth as silk. Online though, no matter the server, its a jittery
nightmare of lag.
I ping 40ms to my own servers, and see about 50-60ms in CS 1.6. In CSS I
see 90-100ms. Oh well.

I was thinking more along the lines of how many fps do you actually
get when the cpu is loaded compared to when its empty, rather than the
increase in cpu usage (which is a an issue in itself but more if
people with multiple instances etc).

I have never actully seen a higher cpu usage when I turn the max frames up.
If it does heppen the change in cpu usage is very small, llike 1 or 2 %.
I do run linux servers, and the max frames on my servers is 333 even though

I have never had a server crash becuase of high frames per second. Just amx

Or even better have it forced and fixed at a sensible value so every
server out there plays the same (relatively), and remains stable when
the servers busy ;)

RE: SV: [hlds_linux] CSS sys_ticrate

2004-11-09 Thread Michael Webber
Hi thanks for the FAST REPLY!!! but yeah that didnt seem to fix anything.
It was at 300, and 333 seems 2 be the max for my 1.6 servers anyways.Ok
so how do I do stats in CSS? (u know who the uptime, cpu usage, players,
and frames? )
I hope we dont have to wait a year to get a decent ping dropper. Should be
a reason why the ingame ping and real ping should be different by more then
20.

I use fps_max=1000 to get better performance. Still little to high ping but
hopefully Valve will fix this in the future.

Hi all,
First time posting on this mailing list. I have many regular CS and HL
servers up, and I have impoved their ping by changing my sys_ticrate to
500.
The server responds a lot better ingame. For CSS I cant seem to find
where I can turn up the server fps. Sys_ticrate doesnt seem to exist. Any
ideas?
Thanks.
