Didn't they used to do this when STEAM was BRAND new? I recall being
able to add -update or some crap to the command line to make it donwload
beta updates to test...anyone else remember this and would it be that
hard to start up again?

Understandable. To fix a problem with code as substansial like this will
take quite a long time to debug...and many times, you can't really
produce and ETA regarding a fix...
However, it is still true that extensive testing of the patch should
have been done before releasing the update so as to avoid problems such
as this. I think there should at least be a BETA process for upgrades to
allow some people interested in being on the BLEEDING edge to be able to
obtain the most recent updates and test them thoroughly before moving it
to true production status.

Can I be so bold as to ask if we should expect a +ip fix tonight?
I don't have one CSS server that runs on the main ip. I will stay up
waiting for it if I know its coming.

cl_ commands mean client. cl_smooth is a client side cvar.

I would pay ~1$ per month (ok, I'm german, I would pay 1 euro! :D)
if there is a garantee that valve is updating VAC daily! It should not
be possible to get a running cheat for longer than xx hours.
Maybe they invent the cheater-free dedicated server with a small
license of ~2-5$ a month. I would pay for.

and setting up one on a PC at home...

Disgusting.

If you think running it from home is easier or cheaper then go right
ahead. I happen to be a person running on a home connection. 1 megabit/sec
up and 1.5 megabit/sec down. Two gameservers totalling 30 slots plus web,
email etc with static IP. I pay and what I dont pay I put into maintaining
two physical linux boxen.

Except you are the rarity, most people on home connections don't have
those kind of speeds and they run off their old celeron boxes or older
P2 or P3's. At least in my experience. Just for shits and giggles, i
took an old computer from my office home with me today and fired it up
here with CS. It was small 8 player pub, full within 5 minutes...no one
had a ping below 150 because it was laggy, and it stayed full for about
5 hours before i decided to take it down because I dont want to run a
shitty server. But it does go to show you the home connections do get
the traffic first :(

Re: [hlds_linux] Traffic slow down on our DoD Server, Need Help!!

Question:
How would VALVe determine if you were at home or in a data center? What
kind of method would they use to decide? How long the server had been up
and running (Under the assumption that most home servers are started up to
play a few rounds on, then shutdown when the host leaves)? Who owns the
IP(This doesn't seem likely, I can't imagine them checking the databases
for IP ownership to determine list order)?
If we figure out what their criteria is, perhaps we can get around it..

its the first octet of your IP, mine is 66. If i do a refresh all, then
stop it 2-3 seconds later, the first octect of EVERY single server is
66. A lot of them even have the same second octect.

Yes they will be, I receive a HL2 key for the 9800 XT bundle and it
works with EVERY game steam offers right now except CZ.

the key IS for HL2? I think this is somewhat dangerous, as someone can

The ONLY reason i bought this 9800XT when I did was because I got a free
copy of HL2. You get this little coupon voucher inside your video
card's box. You use a coin to scratch off the stuff (like on a lottery
ticket) and it has a CD-key there to input into steam. ValvE claims
once they release HL2 it will magically show up in the games list. So
yes, I would assume that its a CD-key, or at least as close to a CD key
as one can come!

This is a limited time bonus offer that expires once Half-LifeĀ® 2 is
available. Don't be surprised if the keys allocated via products such as
ATI's cards become invalid for HL games once HL2 comes out.

Haha, you are probably right...but honestly I don't care if they do.
I've quit all HL mods until HL2 comes out, I can't stand the crap that
goes on now-a-days. Valve completely stopped working on VAC after 2
weeks of wonderfully enjoyable CS. So, if they do make them
unavaialable, so be it...i guess!
