RE: [hlds_linux] [OT] Newb question about Linux..

2002-09-30 Thread Joshua Gardiner

Quick update - I did it this morning and everything went as smooth as can
be. Had to reconfigure some hardware but that was it.

Thanks for all the help. :)

Compile a kernel with support for the new cpu and all other hardware,
then swap the motherboards, cpu, ram and so on...
After that start the the new computer up, you might need a rescue
disk. Run lilo and after that reboot it. Choose the new kernel and
hope
 :)

You might get some better answer on a linux mailing list, I did not
put
that much effort on how to solve your problem... This is after all a
 list about HL in linux...

Or, better, since you are running some modern RedHat (post 7.2 or 7.3),
use up2date to download and install the apropiate kernel.

My bet (i'm no Duron expert) is that the duron most probably would use
the stock redhat kernel for i686, or just the same kernel as you are
using today. If you are using GRUB as your bootloader that should do it
(no need to rerun anything).
So - go ahead swap the disk.
Have fun.

My current box is a PIII 550 running 256megs of ram. Now, when I have

 take
my duron 800 with 512megs of ram and swap the board and proc. Can I
just
swap the hardware and boot the primary and RH will be peachy after it
 does
its standard checks? Or will I be looking at a full reinstall and
 configuration of RH? :\

 Thanks..

This might be hard for you do do since you don't have that much linux
experience, but I'll explain it anyway...
You don't need to reinstall everything but you might consider that if
you don't know what I'm talking about in this mail.

then swap the motherboards, cpu, ram and so on...
After that start the the new computer up, you might need a rescue
