Yup - the old folders/files are still there, so I'm trying a fresh install to 
see if that will do it, Windows went without a problem with the old files being 
there :(

An update to Day of Defeat: Source has been released.  Linux servers
that are set to be automatically updated will be.  Otherwise please run
hldsupdatetool to get this update.  Here are the changes:

Day of Defeat: Source:
*   Improved hitbox detection for player body parts that extend
outside of the bounding box
*   Fixed players being able to capture areas from farther away than
intended
*   Fixed an exploit where player could plant the bomb and switch
teams, causing the bomb to explode and give the point ownership to the
wrong team
*   Fixed bell sound playing on knife impacts
*   Fixed players switching to the tnt view model if they picked it
up while a smoke grenade was deployed
*   Fixed several map exploits
*   Fixed minimap cap areas showing the number of players present
even if those players were on the owning team
*   Fixed a case where user could crash the server with a client
command
*   Fixed a case where dod_Jagd would not respond to mp_timelimit
changelevels
*   Fixed an exploit that could be used to throw grenades farther
than intended
*   Fixed logging events kill_planter and kill_defuser showing
incorrect data
*   Fixed several cvars not being saved in the config ( death
effects options, hud_centerid )
*   Fixed animation issue where player would not have an animation
if they expended all ammo
*   Fixed issue where a player would be stuck on spawn if they were
defusing when the round restarted

The update to Day of Defeat: Source has been released. Linux servers
will be updated automatically. Windows servers will need to run the
hldsupdatetool to get this update.

Once again, here are the changes:

- Added new Detonation game mode
- Added two new Detonation maps: Jagd and Colmar
- Added film grain and color correction cinematic effects while in
spectator
- Optimizations to the player animation blending system
- Improved bullet and melee attack hit detection
- New shaders added
 - Image-based texture blending
 - Light warping
 - Phong Shading/Rim Lighting on player models
- Added support for bloom on DX8 video cards
- Added vertex lighting to props.
- Fixed a case where players could get under terrain in Argentan
- Weapon balance changes
 - Shortened BAR reload time
 - Garand - reduced recoil and fire delay
- Made it more difficult for players to repeatedly block the same cap in
order to rack up defend points
- Added CVAR cl_autorezoom - set to 0 to not rezoom sniper rifles and
rocket weapons
- Fixed player being able to clear mg42 heat by undeploying and
redeploying while reloading
- Added blocking walls to enemy spawn entrances
- Fixed stepping over window ledges in Avalanche

Nothing.

Isn't it more likely the specific content server you're using is getting
hammered, and/or it's outgoing traffic is at its limit (or the network
interface's limit)?

Besides:
Updating 'Day of Defeat Source Base Content' from version 7 to version 9
Downloading: ./\dod\bin\client.dll
Downloading: ./\dod\bin\server.dll
Downloading: ./\dod\bin\server_i486.so
...

You will have to stop the server before you can replace the game
binaries, like Erik said before.

Shouldn't have that much effect...the clients are all sym linked so they
having all those files in memory.  I can remove their account and all
their files but if their process was not disabled then they continue to
operate as normal.  HLDS does not have this problem.

a friend...and I'm babysitting this updater tool.  Anyone else have this
problem a lot for CS Source updating?  It sticks forever, especially if
