[hlds_linux] Ping Spikes?

2002-08-14 Thread Joshua Gardiner

Hiya,

I'm new to this so bear with me. I am running a server with a PIII 550mhz
and 256megs of ram. I'm getting random ping spikes to specific players. :\

Now, I know you guys know a few tricks to improve ping.. any idea what might
be causing this? I'm running nothing but HLDS on the box, and only one
instance of it at that.

Thank you in advance,
Joshua

If it's specific players and not all players, then probably a routing
problem.

If its only to specific players (and not all) then it sounds like the
network path between your server and them. As the internet doesn't have
a useful QoS capability built into it (and I would argue it never will
have a scalable one :) there ain't much that can be done.

You can control ping on the server by using the pingboost options and
having fast hard disks. But that form of ping affects all players equally.
