Agreed. Especially since Steam is in place, now, meaning Valve has
real-time control over the game client, you'd think anti-cheat measures
would be much more effective and efficient now. Basically just
integrate C-D into the servers and the clients, and you're good to go.

FYI http://www.theradianteye.com/p00pernickel_steamid.htm; is a bad
link. i don't know where that came from. theradianteye.com is one of my
web properties.
However.
I will combine your 850 list and add the set of steamid's culled from
the log analysis that nabbed a bunch of myg0ts and other newly detected
cheaters and will update my list at
http://www.theradianteye.com/banned_user.txt (mirrored at
http://70.85.25.116/banned_user.txt) later today.
I will create a dedicated page for this showing the date/time of last
update.
In the near future I will host a web service for on-demand pulls and
subscriber notification services.
another project i am working on is a public near-real-time log parsing
web services that will accept logging from CSS servers and return
updated ban lists.
I have a ways to go on this one because the hueristics need time to
learn and lower the margin of error to a reasonable level .
Another component of this effort is a remote server admin system
deployed as web pages for both standard browsers and windows mobile
smart phone users.
(the smart phone thing will allow you to look busy in those snoozer
meetings while you admin your servers. a must have... lol...)

I manually took out any duplicates, and updated my banned_users.cfg
file so
it now has 850 bans. This is being shared with as many server admins as
possible, and more are being added all the time. I started today with 350
bans.
Get the ban list of 850 Steam ID's here:
http://www.kain-9.com/server/banned_user.cfg and let me know if you
know of
more legitimate bans. This problem is still not fixed by Valve for HL2,
although there was a plugin that was independently developed which
seems to
have resolved my servers crashing so far. In any case, the more players
realize they will be permanently banned by a large network of server
admins,
the more effective we will be on our own.
This is probably the most intelligent use of this HLDS list that I can
think
of.

I'm not impressed with their (steambans) execution.
I registered a bunch of servers and they never ever scanned them after
the first setup scan.
So I deleted the configs from steambans.com and changed all my rcon
passwords.
on the other hand, the we adopted the adjudication model requiring a
demo with status listing and screenshot.
This has helped us nail a whole lot of speed hackers.
The system I am building is geared in a different way and a lot more
towards enterprise server management.
What I am doing will not require rcon access to servers. that is too
plain a security risk to even go that way.
Regards...

2005-03-25 Thread Chris Jones
Original message from wArgOd:

I'm not impressed with their (steambans) execution.

I am not impressed with their judgement either. I've had a few people
obviously hacking on my server and looked up their steamID there, which
was listed as being let off the hook. Perhaps they want to play it
safe, but enough is enough these days. My server is flooded with
hackers and myg0t ragers on a daily basis, despite having admins on at
nearly all times, a ban list over 1000, and every trick I can think of
enabled via mani and some scripts I wrote.

What we really need is an engine which cannot be easily exploited.
Trying to maintain a blacklist only goes so far. The kiddies have an
unlimited supply of disposable steamID's using a hacked client and only
IP bans have any effect, and even then a lot of them use DHCP-supplied
IPs and know how to get a new one from the pool. Not to mention, it
seems like there are more troublemakers than actual players..

Running a public server is becoming an unrewarding and frustrating
experience lately; the MPC cheats download list is a few pages long with
the various hacks we know so well from cs 1.6 that give them an unfair
advantage, and myg0t works overtime to find and exploit the many
problems with the engine.

VAC2.. Please?

I think it's fair to say that VAC for 1.6 is dead. It's been months
since the last update and Valve has made no comment whatsoever regarding
it's future. Sadly, in my opinion, VAC was a failure. It never worked
that well to begin with and despite Valve's pledges of commitment, I
only saw it as a half hearted attempt at stopping cheating. It's a shame
Valve didn't license Punkbuster or attempt to hire a good anticheat
coder like the author of the original Cheating Death.
